Messrs. li. M. - Warm. s a aL—Ou'rwasiug t—l was pre
sent by invitation, atanexperkoent with your Improved
Fire sod Water P roof Compositkut Rooting, on the 21st
of May last. The object, I suppose, wig to give persons
not acquainted with the nature of the roofing, an oppor
tunity to see it tasted. I ambled on the ground about I
o'clock and saw tbel bowls put on tke roof they were
in a rough state, the edam net jointed. or grooved and
matched. After the hoards were on they were covered
with three layers of felt, and then by a coating deem.
position, and the whole masted with gravel.
A quantity of combustlbfe MAMA was placed within,
and at the appointed time a match was applied. A furi
ous fire won twat from all sides of the house, and en
veloped the whole building In a flame. II continued to
burn for at least throe quarters of an hour. At that
stage of the fire, I &It a desire to know host the roil
. would stand if water was thrown upon It;end.taked per
mission to try the experimenteshich was 'granted, an d
I applied three or form buckets of water on the roof
which run off as though there wan no lire under or
around It. • . I
•Gettleseen, my opinion la, that se far as fire is CM.:
mimed, it Is the test kind of a teof, from the tact that its
air tightness prevents combustion. In rase of a tire in a
building where the roof is of your material, the fire
would not be likely to extend to the, adjoining build
ings. I bad an example of this kind last winter, on the
rth day of January,' at 4 old tek in the morning.: A fire
broke out In a row of Brick Houma. on the eolith side of
Seybert St. west of 22nd street. It had a roof of your
Composition, and the fire, was oonfined to the house
where it originated.' I hare no hesitation Its saying that
if it had been an ordinagref, the whole row would
have butted down,,from the het, that it was one of the
coldest mornings we had lasi winter, and the wind blew
a hurricane at the time, &theft street is north of the
Girard College wall, and at that time of the mooning,
together with the ;coldness of the weather, Made it a
long time before we could get water on •the building,—
Notwithstanding. fhb', we extingulahod the fire rosiest
Wary to the adjoining intlidinas.
I therefore recommend your roofing to the community
le a superior preventive of tire,

One of the greatest hissries of the table, both
in summer and in winter, is Bogor cc Sweet
Corn. To our taste, all other varieties of,eute to
eat preen" "are Worthless compared with it. Oar
method is to keep a conit' ant supply by succeuirs
planting, -Jett* to the' period of frosts.=
Making the, largest ' planting about the first of,
July, with an early Torbay for planting for winter,
This matures usually in 'September, which is the
best season for drying. Our method is this:—
When there is the promise of a fair day, early is -
the morning the corn Mathertd, snob only as Is
well filled; it is then husked and put into boiling
water and allowed to remain eight or ten minutes.
It is than taken out and immediately eat from the
cobs, with a sharp knife, and , spreid on a oleos
sheet upon a roof or scaffold, \inclining to the
south. It should be stirred once\ or . twice during
the day, and by night it will beworne so dry as to
be past danger of bsjury.. It .sho* he ecrrered
during the night to keep oir the dew,end exposed
ignin for two , or three days to the sun, whia;i f
the weather is fair, it will usually be perfectly
dry and may than be put into a keg and headed
tight, or hung op in a firm linen bag for use.,
We have recently eaten corn of the eposol
kind, -preserved by a new and easier meth'od;
which seems to be as tender, with all the sweet-,
neat sad freshness of flavor that 11 had when ant
gathered, and may answer equally well 'in pre. i
serving the sweet corn, which we regard as the
'only variety worth' preserving.
It is simply gathered and boiled bathe MVS:
manner, 8t for the table; it is then cut from 6'
cob and packed in a tight keg or jar, (wood is
said to be the beat) in alternate leyere of salt'
sufficient to preserve it. Some, in the. place of
salt, apply a Strong brine. When wanted for use
it is soaked In fair water w hich must be s chaorti
to remove the excess of salt, anilthen boiled, adi•
lag butter or cream and a little sugar to soil the
