Barnsley eight feet, or thick ',ad; there is anoth
er, of loss importance, knownas the Abby mine,
which is, however, • not nearly so. deep. The
Barnsley thick bed is regarded throughout as a
fiery coal, giving off,on occasions explosive gas
in considerable quantities. The explosion • took
place 'on the 19th, Feb., at about balf.pact 12
o'clock, while oPerations were suspended for din.-
ner; it was accompanied by a report which was
heard fur a couple of mites, and thewhole neigh
,borhood was shaken as if an .earthquake had .ta - .
ken place. The mine has been Werke& two.years,

Candles, hOwever, were almost invariably the il
luminating power, and rafety-lamps -were virri a y
used, the exception wily i!eing when it was known
that fire damp existed.. • '
' On the subject of the cause of the accident, a'
variety' of causes are assigned for the explosion.
One letter states, notwithstanding what has been
averred to the contrary, that the vontiletion, has
long' been deficient—that 200 beings reqeired
601,000 ft. of pure air, when, probably owineto
istifti pram of the weadter, there was not half. the
quantity i and reasons are 'assigned for the igni
tion of the furnace. ...Another states that;
mine hoe not been often enough and .properly in
spected.' Mr. Warington Smith observed, somel
few days since, at the Schoel of Mines, there
'was scarcely over a colliery explosion, that. there
- were not numbers of. ihdividuals who could tell
how the accidents occurred; and were able to pro
. vide nostrumi for thoir.prevention ;• but, in his
opinion, whenever these' lamentable occurrences.
look place, .they conld,be generally 'traced to a
defective mode of laying out the workings in the
first place ;' and in this opinion Most men ae
q'iMinted with colliery Workings will coincide.
If so much depends on laying out the workings
aright, how , inexcusable, then, it-will be for us, if
we do , not avail ourselves in the opening and lay:.

by the costly expCrience and the .discotieriee of

Tha l total thiptupots by Canal are 33,773 16 tons
which is an increase. ' The Canal lash year_ did
riot open.until the fifth of April. -
The quantity sent by, Railroa d last Sear for the
Corresponding week, was 41,610 tons—only 4000
ions ;leis than the combined shipments of Canal
'and ;!railroad this week.
The demand for Coal continues very
•and there Is no disposition to buy except for tin.
mediate consumption. It will take at .least three
weeks, yet to settle the tfade down to any thing
like l a regular business 4 • ' •
The low prices at which somo • Coal has been
?ffernd, (less than the cost,of production,) keeps
'purchases, back; and hasides; the stocks aro riot
yid exhausted at some points. •
An effort Se making by some iarties here and
at Now York, to reduce the prise of . freight •by
Canal from $1 90 to $1 80; Severa l boats wore
loaded at this rate, one of which; we learn
was bored ,and sunk, and another set on fire at
night, hitt which was discovered in time to pre
vent.eny serious damage. At Schuylkill Haven
there is a very large Beet of Boats, mariy,of which
are loaded, but by mania secret
seems . to control the Bestmen, • they are ,not
mittin.), or are afraid to depart, until all 0 2 ship
pars agree to pay $1 90 ,freight to Neer York.—
Onc [ 4operater, who tried to force the freight down,
has (upwards or twenty boats loaded which aro
detained. There does [not appear to be any open
viol [ epce used—but the boats do not depart, and.
no person seems to[ltn4vr by whoni, or by whlit
[ trflauce, they are controlled. macs of the
trade look on with indifference; and don't • care

Coal on the market when not wanted, and thus,
reduce prices below the paying' point. The fact
is, the Coal Trade is in a state of lievolutiontbe
• evils under which it bap labored have become in
tokrot/e.:—there is a de[termination on the part of
tho l trade, who ,have millions of investments at
risk, to remove these evils at all hazer* It is
a question of success or ruin to many—and, sink
or entria, the effort will be made. Those who stand
aloof and give aid mi l d- comfortjthe enemy, will
reap the reward of the "Cow Boys" in the
old revolutioni [ in the estimation of 'the commu

THE miners have turned, out at a number o
Collieries for higher wages. 'Millis rather earlier
in the season than usual, but it is better that these
turnouts should take place now than later in the.
season, when the business' is fully under way.—
The miners are scarce in this region, and nothing
