Blowing Cylinder, 14 ft. dime.; stroke' 12 feet.
- Air Valves, number 70; size, 2 feet squar,o of
!either and sheet iron.
Alternating beam., 40 feet long; weight 28 tone.
Tkis engine ie supplied with steam-,from 10
boilerk.whieh consume 40 tons of Coal every day
of 24 hours. It drives the , blast for 6 furnaces,
and accomplishes the work of 3 engines, formerly.
No. 2 is a high maxim,' engine, on what is
called the "compound principle. There are two
cylinders, one at each end of the altercating
beam, and the steam alter performing its duty in
1. 1 ;
the first, escapes into , the seven which being
lamer than tho other, allows th ' steam to ex
pand. The total power is 380 ho es. • The pis
ton-trod at one end has 10 feet et e; at this end
two rods, desdeuding from the beam, work. the
-piston of the West cylinder situated below. This
immense cylinder is 14 feet in diameter, and has
70 air valves. Engine No. 2, is supplied With
steam (at a pressure of about. 55 1614 from 6
boilers, using each 4 tone of , Coal in the day of
24 hours. ./ 1

dally—i demand large enough to keep quite
respectable Pennsylvania Coal mine going pretty
steadily to satisfy it. And if to this be added
thaconsumption by 14 j atoves (two for each of the
7 hot-blast furnaces) for heating the air-eurrent,
amounting to 20 tons daily, we obtain a total con
sumption of 180 tone of Coed per day, attending
the mere ire trodretiose of air to the 'Metalurgiced
proceed' as conduited at these Mammoth woilre !
Secondly, for the Forge; therei- are nine steam
engines,

are 10 engines, with 800-horse power.
The summing of these items gives a total of 27
steam engines, and 3,535.' horse power—nearly
One-third of.the aggregate steam power need in
mining in Sehuylkill County, To which should
be, added 8 Locomotives engaged in drawing Coal,
Ore, and Limestone, from the surrounding mines
to .the furnaces—and the manufactured rails and
bars to the Tat Vale Railniad ; which conveys
them, a distance of 60 miles to the sescoast at
Cardiff.
The entirevonsumption of Coal at the Dowleis
Iron Works, may then be summed up` as follows:

Thus tutmonsO output of Coal to mined on the
lands of the proprietor, Sir Ivor . Guest, in 12 Pita
and 17 or 20 levels for Coal and Ore. One of these
levels opens directly into the yard of the works,
beneath the furnaces, supplying SOO tons daily for
the ptirposds of the forge, as follows : •
For the Balling furnaces, 3 tons of Coal per 5
tons of Iron:
For the 'Puddling furnaces, 1 ton of Coal per 1
too of Iron. r -
For the *Batting, Eton of.:Coal per l ton of
Iron.
The Coal and Ore are brought from all the sur
rounding pits—the Ore - being mostly worked in
open quarries, or patches on the mountain sides.
It would require,alMost the whole,Qumberland
.Coal Seld, , st steady work, to iapply the demands
of this one huge Iron'establishment alone.
, If the production of Coal in Pennsylvania is
now—Bituminous and Anthracite—nearly 9 mil
lions of tone yearly, whop the Iron manufacture•
is in its infancy, what may we not expect of it,
when the latter, fully expanded and developed at
every point, 61 our whole State with works on
the scale of these at Merthyr Tiara
