A comparison of ibis account with the state
cot of 1855, shows the following results, viz:
Decrease this year, 1440,710 64
This result can hardly be regarded as unfor
seen. The last antitud report did nit express the
anticipation of an decrease of business. Indeed,
rightly considered, the managers feel , that this
statement should not 6e regarded as unsatisfacto
ry. A year of great depression in that j trade
which is mainly the support of the company,
with a season of almost unexampled severity, has
been passed through, and still net profit* have
beeb earned fo an extent sufficient to pay a-fair
dividend to the proprietors. It , sufficiently dem
obatrates thayhe work is able, under the most
adverse einumstanees ' to equal, if not exceed,
most of the great works of internal improvement.
By comparing the business of the prevent with that
of a few antecedent'3 ears, 't wUI be seen that .
ln 1864, the coal milled was . iserrom te r m
And the net profits $2,010438 21

And the net profits g 444.437 74
Ica 1856, the coal carried was 2,088003 tons
And the net prottal $1,944,72212
The steerage rate of freight and coal was
In 1854, $ l -a 6800 per ton of emit earned,
In 106, 1.66 54 . 100 do do
10.866, lAS 62 100 dO do
And the per , eentage of expanses on the receipts was,
In 1654, 44 per cent.
In 1656.40% percent.
And in 11356,401 per cent.
It may not be inexpedient to allude to seine of
the causes which hare led to th 6 diminution in
th 6 amount of coal transported during the past
year. atm business opened in the spring under
gnat disadvantages and the whole year has not
been one of prosperity , to the reining Interest.—

In 1852 and 1858, there was no increase in pro

about equal to the coasumption. In 1854, the de
eland greatly eseeededthe capacity or the miner;
high prices were suddenly established, and every
interest connected with tie trade prospered.—
This continued In 1853, but *wards A dis close of
that year, the supply went beyond Dm demand,
and the inevitable" result, a plat depression in
price ensued.
During this period, moreover, in Other regions,
new railroads were in progrosil and new mines be

chiefly, of lumber, from the railroads connecting
at Auburn and Port Clinton, delivered at short
distances frout those syitions. : The demand fur
lumber for mining pummel', must lead to a great
increase of this tratso upon these connecting roads.
When extended to the supply of this city, it will
mako the transportation of lumber as vaioahle
and important to this road ai it is now upon some
others. The through business to the lakes, Can-

when it is fully known find'appreciated that the
‘city of Philadelphia can now; by these connect

doubted that the time will soon come when, by

a lo'b period' very small ordinary repairs. ' :
The great difficulty in permanently maintain
in the roadway of all railroads consists in . the
uncertainty as to the quality of new rails. From.
'Whatever cause this may arise, it is so great, that the
erection of mills to rework their old rails, Was be.
come to railroad companies a question not merely of
. economy, but almost onset necessity. Daring the
past year, tails were removed thit bad been in the
track since the opening of the road, and others that
bad not been in use twelve months. A high first Most
of rails is therefore a matter of little importance,
provided it secures a corresponding superior quail
Sty. To do this, however; the manufacture must
bo cond ucted with 'view 'to qualiti rather than
profit, which can only be expected when the con'.
sumer is. the manufacturer. Unless . some.. ar-
rangement can be made to have old rails reworked
under the immediate control of the engineer of
the company, it may becothe•expedient to 'ergot

:For profit, companies probably manufacture' at a
disadvantage, but for consumption, - experience
has proved that maehieer, wheels,-&c., can be
