I have seldom experieneent watef running any otadd
arable distance on the floor of a mine without it wit de
signedly left to do so to discharge itself trod the mine
or to the drainage'puthps; but I have often found It
running to the extreme "dip" iii the' workings-through
space formed In the rock below the Coal vein, at a
depth of between two and three feet, when there has
not been the least sign of water near the surface of the
Am of the mine, which appeared quite dry.
The spumes throe owes is formed below the Omar of
the sated mdttry which the water finds its tray is in two
ways. 'lnt, by the pressure of the pillars of Coal on
each side of the driftways, and secondly, by the pressure
and action of the water on some substances on which;
water has the power to act as a solvent, ,such as the
clays in an otdurated form..
When a drift is opened to the pressure of the pillars
of Coal, or I should say the total pressure from the sur
face, the floor is generally bent upward" into the drift
in such a manner as to form ',space a little below the
Cad vein, of capacity sufficient to allow a passage • for a
• large quantity °flutter. This space is formed In the
drifts leading to all parts of the work through which
the water duds Its way, and In 'which it gathers othead
'or column, until It attains a pressure setfleient- to pro.
dues a crack do the shell composing the floor of the
mine, from whence it issues into the do:kluge. Those
cracks are always being produCed as the workings 'or
drifts extend to the dlpward,' and are only discernable
- to the moat minute observer. The water is generally
supposed to originate somewhere Iu the immediate
oeighberhood of those cracks. and they ere Bobbin, If
ever noticed by managers, but when the water effort*
fresh cracks near the faces of the: dipping workings, it
ceases to How from the cracks it had tormerly produced,
perhspa several yards behind the 'frovi&of the, workings.
This is enough to show that-the water Is originating at
some point on the "rime' of the'werldrio. ' - 1
to other cases a space may be .made- by the chemical
action of water through sortie 'thastructable substanth
when Mathis found at a depth of a few feet below the
Coal vein. This space may' again lie enlarged by the
mechanical action of the water as It pursues ita way

When water Is totted to be rhnning underneath the
