PALE-YOl3llll MAX
I noticed one day in my ride toward home,
an old leather-stained, worn and rickety chaise,
in whicb s was seated a pale young, man. He
was a fragile creature, with cadaverous cheek
and hollow, beseeching eyes, that 'glistened
fearfully with - each roll in the socket.. He
bent as he moved, and his breath came short
and gaspingly. His garments hung loosely
in wide folds over his thin form, betraying its. ,
sahrunken proportions. His bands were fold
ed
with an air childishly meek, and yet there
seethed -a certain forlornness in.that meek air. I
I and the swaying posture in which he sat inl
the old chaise, betokening extreme exhausta
etion.
i The worn old chaise stood before a marble- I
worker's - shop, where fronting the door, tang I
the smoky - building, and along the smearedi
windows, laughing in great cracks; and on all
sides of the ancient fence that two generations
bad seen, white shafts, gray stones and brown
slabs uprose, ghastly shapes vet beautiful,
with angels and cherubs sculptured thereon,:
some for hard featured men, and some for ;
blameless maids, and others for youths not
yet world stained. Many of these shapes,
types of beauty more perishable then them- I
selves, -though made by more cunning hands,
bore, graceful willows drooping' from the
stainless marble; doves spread their snowy
wings; urns, in pensive solitude,' ; ( waited ;fori
the tear of grief—and.over man y bent the
cold farms of passive sorrow, s ns shades,'
mourning for the soul that had departed.
It seemed a gloomy stopping place-fur the I
.pale youngrwn, to one along lvhose veins
bounded the gorous pulse of health—and
- yet the serene face of the invalid, suffused I
with a glad and almost holy expression that I
softened its ghastliness, and made its sadness
more spiritual, formed a picture Strangely in
keeping with the surroundings of defith. Day
after day, as I passed I saw him, usually in
the same place, either being assisted by some
dear friend into the old leathery Chaise, or
sitting so listless, yet so patient, watching the I
motions of the laborers engaged at their work. I
Once I fortunately met a friend, as I
pointed out the pale young man, spoke of him ,
as one he had long known,
and going toward
the rusty chaise, he held forth his hand.—
With
a glad life expression, the invalid grasp
ed it, saying, "this is a very unexpected
pleasure.'
"How are you now,. my friend V interroga
ted the other.
"Well," he said, and the sweetest smile
broke all over his pale features, "I'm nearer
borne than ever—:thank God

TILE UNION OF THE OPPOSITION.-.lt is
amusing to observe the complacent meaner,
in which the Dernocmtiz. printa talk of carry-,
lug New York,PennsYlvania and Ohio at the
next Proidential election. .How they will
accomplish-it we are at a loss to imagine.—
They certainly Ido not posiess the requisite
numercial strength in either; to beat the com
bined forces of the OppositioP. In. New York
at the last election, the Americans polled the
largest aggregate vote, the Republicans came
next, and so dnandled dowa were the Demo
cracy, that the ‘4ggregate voie , of the "Hards"
and"Sofl,s," di4 pot equal th Republican vote.
A pretty prospect the Democracy have of
carrying New! ;York. In 'ennsylvania last
`Fall,:in spite of the actual indifference which
'was felt in the 'ranks of the; Opposition, and
the camparatiVely small vote it polled, while
the Democracy; undivided, exerted` herculean
efforts, and didpoll theirheaviest vote,' yet
on the Canal Coramisgioner, ,upon summing
up the aggregate vote, it 'was clearly shown
'that the Opposition had a !considerable ma
jority. Had they but united.; had they •but:

position is at; this moment stronger it any.
thing, than it was last Fall, what with a' good,
man, and the leading principle, opposition'S to
the Kansas-Nebraska infamy, will prelient, the
united opposition from carrying the State
next Fall by that majority? Nothing. Not
even "Ten Cent Jimmy" on• his native
heath, with his doughfaeed vanguard to
support him:! The Dintoeracy's chances of
carrying Pennsylvania, are frightfully slim,
we opine. ilaw, how abbot Ohio? Well,.
the best answer we can givie to the query' is,
that the "Buckeye Slate" ['elected Ford—as
good an American Republican, as exists in
the North—by 40,000 majPrity, and that force
of freemen are at this day stronger than, ever. -
