The spirit and daring of Fremont ere ex;

powering every other feeling, induced him -to I
elope with and marry 'Old Bullion's' daughter.
And she proved a noble wife. Although rear
ed in a State, tolerating the "peculiar institu
tion," vet she participated in the feelings en
tlrtained by her husband in relation • to the
evil, and when she folloWed him to California,
which was to be their future home, she ex

than submit to such a degradation, she-would
do the work of her household with her own

bat they indicate how strong mast have been
thefeelings of her husband, on the question
of the extension of Slav:ery, and how arduous
must have been his exertions to procure the
admission of California as a Free State
Mr. Fremont has proved by his ',llfe that he
is fitted for the position for which he has been
chosen by the Republicans. The convention
of the present week at Philadelphia, was one
of the most imposing and dignified, that ever
assembled in this country. The gentlemen
present, as delegates—teeny of whom were
aged and experieeced-twere ihe most influ
entialand intelligent that. could ; be selected
by the people of the different States they re
presented. On the - first and amid a
scene of enthusiasm- that will be remembered
by all present, to the last moments of their
existence, they nominated .john C. Fremont.
No hackneyed politician, nor one wholf elect
ed would tatter with age, from the inaugura
tion Platform into the .grave, was chosen by
that augtist assemblage. No; but one in the
prime of life, fresh, active, chivalrous, whose
,principles are known and Are ,as 'true to free
dom, as the needle f to the pole; in fine, a man
of the peOple was selected with acchtliation.

their behest. Now we ask what has James
Buchanan
nalone?pe We' will try and answer
by Stating—absolutely nothing for his ' coun
im but everthing for self. He has served in'
public life a great. many years, and has fatten
ed on the public funds to the amo at of hun
dreds of thouiands of.'dollars, an 'roe chal
lenge htsfrimls to point ont.one 4ingle nice- '
sure_ einanating , from
,James Buchanan, that
has' redounded lo the interests off"? country.
Was he not the most bitter Opponent .of the
'--
last war with Great Britain, even - declaring
I
ia his raving opposition to that war and Mad.
isda's 'administration,' that if he ; had "one
drop of demociatic, blood in . ' hi veins, le
would let it, out,"—a . war too that`has covered
this country all over with glory, Earth / on - sea
and land? Has he not been the most deter
mined opponent of Protection to D4mestic
Industry—and in that opposition went so fin.
as to declare;that if you reduced . the industry
of this country - to the same eondition as" that
of slave-ridden Caba, you would i "cover the
country with blessings and prosperity ?" Did
he not slander the greateit statesman of the
age, the immortat,Clay, by orialinating the
charge of bargain and corruption gainst him,
with a view of blastitig his character forever?
• Oh! was not that a - crime sufficieirt to make
even angels weep. Is he not new' the stan
dard bearer of a party, whose platform was
erected and covered with the blociti of slaugh
tered freemen in Kansas, and wh'ch emerged
i n
from the smoking ruins of the Ka sas settler's
cabin, begrimed and blackened? ls he not
the defender 'of a tyranny, ten-fold worse than
that resisted by our fathers of the Revolution?
Was he not• the author of the Ostend Circular,
which set forth the brigand's plea that "might
makes right," a doctrine made * whichmade every
man of honorable feelings ha g his head
with Name nod mortification, anl ; which, if it
ti
had been carried outiour country would have
,
stood disgraced in the eyes of the IWorld ? We
admit he has a good private Character—
we admit he has talents -t:-but we deny that
he ever originated a single meas ure that has
redounded to the, honor , of the
tended to advance, its prosperity.

Philadelphia Is singularly tbrtunate with'
the new steitinshiirr4 her Liverpool line—the
City of Baltimore—that vessel arriving at
that eity onlTnasday, in thirteen days from
port to port, anticipating the Arago at New
"(irk, which sailed on the dame day from
Southampton. This line is of incalculable
advantage to Philadelphia ! and that city has,
but one thing in connexion with it to regret.
That is, that its institution, and support are
not due alone to the enterprise of its mercan
tile community. However, to be in rapid
steam communication with Europe is an ad
vantage, and the fact that it (resits existence
to English enterprise, niar be overlooked.
The intelligence brought by this arrival is to
the '4th inst AnnexedlS a digest of the news
which though not important, is interesting:
The news of Mr. Crampton's dismissal had
not yet reached England. The letter announ
cing his dismissal to the Aritish government,
went out by the Asia, which left on the Bth
ult.; and Mr. Crampton himself did not leave
for' : a week later. Rumors of the fact were
very plentiful, and the opinions of the English
press were very freely expressed,
