Dr. Bunting of Montreal, states iu a letter •
to the Boston Erening Journal, that he was
in the gallery of the Senate Chamber at the
time of the assault on Mr. Sumner. Ile says
be saw Brooks approach Mr. SuMner, not in
frunt4ut at th side of his.desk; and address
hi m some words in a• low 'tone; and then, at
the moihpit Mr. Sumner raised his head, 1 urn

on him blovt\after blow, with the. greatest ra
pidity. - i .
Mr. Sumner struggled several:times to rise
from his seat. but was evidently Su touch hem
med in; as to be utterly incapable of rising,
until he had by a great effirt vim the desk ,
trout its fastening,
and then pitched forward,

The following are the main features of the
correspondence between Brooks and Mr.
Wilson. Brooks complains. :that General •
Wilson spoke of his attack on Mr. Sumner as
cowardly„saying—"l therefore:hold myself at
liberty, by this note,!to request that you will
inform me, without delah_ whdrn and when,
outside thisdistrictorther ',tote will reach
you."'
Gen . Wiison replied:—"l characterized, on
the floor of the Senate, the assault upon toy

have no cptalificatioos whatever to make in
regard to:those words.. I have always regard
ed duelling as the lingering relic of a laba

has branded as a crime. •

A manly answer to a plebeinti antagonist
THE SrNINER . 1 061TAGE.—Several indigna-,
tion meetings btive.been held !luring the past
week in - Massachusetts and Other Northern
States, at which the most eminent talent has
as4isted. At all, the brutal assault upon the
Hon. Charles Sumner, was commented upon
with warmth, a nd appropriate • resolutions
.adopted. : The Massachusetts: Legislature on
Wednesday adopted a series resoluti ons
denunciatory of the outrage, and calling upon
Congress to expel the offender. On the other
hand we perceive that the constituency of Mr.
Brooks in South Carolina, have at a public
meeting, approved of the . net" of ;heir reproi
sentative. Upon what ground, we are
.at a
loss to know, for it was for frOm being a man
ly or chivalrous act, and the Senate Chamber
is hardly the proper spot to.perpetrate a bru
tal and bloody assault. .A SOuthern approval
of this Outrage can have but and effect—to
arm Northern representatives in ,the future.
Pro slavery ruffians will yet "discover, that re
tribution though slow is often sure.
Ma. cusurrox, the British Minister at
Washington, has been dismis'sed, and his pass
ports furnished him. The Biit'sh - consuls at
Cincinnati, New York and . Philadelphia, have
also been dismissed., Their dismissal grew
ont of the recruitment question. On Thurs
day, the President communicated toCongress
the groonds for his action in 'the matter. It
is not anticipated that any difficulty will grow
out of the dismissal, with England. as the
Minister and Consuls are dismissed on the
ground that they are - personally unaccepta
ble-to our Government.

of the mass of the Southeru; press, upon the

"As will be seen by Telograpb, Sir. Brooks, of
South Carolina, after the adjouUiment of the Sen

from Massachusetts, an elegant and efectusl
