Without enu merating Carbon or Litzerlie couhties in de tail in this connection, we will to illustrate matter more strikingly, compare the receipts from this source, t . rom Philadelphia and Schuylkill coil n ties. Froni Philadelphia , coun ty with a- population of about t halt a Million, the receipts into the Treasury for licenses of this character,'amounted 'to $6000; while the revenue derived from Schuylkill county, with a population of little over 60,000, for eating house, beer-house and restaurant' licences, amounted during the same period of time, to $3,053 3.l—more than half of the sum paid by .a county containing more than eight times the number of- inhabitants, Schuylkill coun ty ppsSesses. A comparison of this item, with the, revenue derived from similar licenses in Allegheny, l3erks,- Ding - Mitt, Lancaster and Montgomery, the other principal counties in the State, exhibits a still greater preponder ance, as far as our county, is eon;mrned. These figures not only exhibit the fact that reform is needed here; but show' What a fear ful influence we have' been 'called upon to combat. Prohibition would be a blessing to the State at large, but especially to the mining districts, whose hard-working poputition is rob:. bed by the liquor traffic, of .sums that would render their :homes comfortable; of time wherein they would he enabled 'to ,imprgive their iniellectnal faculties, and of the oppor tunity to'"lay up something for a rainy-day.".
