lln 1849, 1850 and 1851, a barn, a hospital
;
and buildinis, amounting to over $4OOO were
built, which increased the amount drawn out
of the Co'urity Treasury—but within the last
four years,: the only improvement made was
the build ing of a pigpen, and - the expenses
have increased from - 5 to $6OOO a year, to $17,-
725 in 1855: Is thisinot alarming? Is this .
pot - :enough to rouse the indignation of every
tai-payer in the county ? Is it' not a most
tremeudbus mouldering of the people's mo 7
ney? Is there any other community in the
whole country, hat would Submit a day to
such a moustreus squandering of the taxes of
the county, by a set of men who are said tole
totally incompetent to take charge of the In
stitution ? •
While the 'Coinmlsaioners have been labor-
i n g hard foril last two, or three years, to
check the eximudithres of the County, with a
view' to the reduction of, taxes, and have suc•
ceeded to such a degree as to command the
• admiration of the people, 'the managers of
the Almshouse are squandering it as fast as
it :has been saved.
It really seems to us, that there is a combina
tion existing in our.county, composed of . a por
tion of otlice-seekers and. plunderers, leagued
together to. plunder everything. they can
gei, hold .of,—and k is
,high time for the honest
ta*-payers of the county to league together
alie, and put a stop to this villainy and, ras•
cality.
,Are pay quite as much tax as any of tine
,Direetors of the Poor,' or the Minagers, and
it has been customary to take ate papers of
the county, for the use of the House. Our
japer has dared to speak out about the extra
gaitt and imbecile nianagement . of the in !
Stitution, while all the other
. ripers did not
breathe sone word about these Atbuses, and
they will•contintie quiet, until tbey find out
' . which is likely to be the 'stronoide of the
question—and then they will be heady to take
fiat side, right or wrong; consequently, the
Directors have ordered tnir paper to be dia•
cantinued—while the others are' received, be•
cause our strictures made them feel bad, and
have spoiled some of •their operations;—and
besides, the reading of the Joitrnal inspired
a Sufficient boldness in some of the inmates
to complain 'of their treaunent, and the it}t`f
morality of the; establishment -hence this
lopping off Of two dollars a year in the Ot
