I..,ENIBLATION OF. TILE CITIES.--. 111 coin; gyring the legislation of the cities in opposi m ro thti legislation of the, country, we are ttressed with the thought, that in conse unice of the presence of ructticy which ttitrally accumulates ill= the cities, that libel-- lly paid national and legislative boiers,:sue ed in obtaining much for the cities, that is !trimental to the interests of the country.— 'or instance, it is a well known fact—or at ast it. is so asserted—that. the Post Office epartment does not pay. - We do not won !r at it, when we consider the fact, that a part of the mail is occupied by ight.l icy articles of merchandize. Althoug,h-itl common practice to send such articles nigh the mail, we cannot see the Object of itting it. It is too evident that all the le Ation of the country, is made through the tuence of the ,citios, to benefit them. It is ft• • policy to retard the prosperity •of the Inntry, in the hope of adding to thortgreat !ss of the cities. Every city grows and, in! reuses in prosperity, in the same ratio that le country in Welt it comes ,in contact is , tere t i antl• encenraged-by legislation. This e,t should be taken info consideration when vs - are .enieted to ,confer ] especial henefits cities, at the expense of the cOttittry. "Let e mails eiretthtte letters; newspapers, and I species of literature; lint we cannot' , see e propriety of - lut twerine• them, with mer ,:-.:ldiv... . . • JCSTICE Borctrr I.lro contem plated, undeterred by any thrents'taf legal ' prosecution, and uninfluenced -by arguments advising a contrary:cow* to have published in our present issue, nn' exposure - of corrup tion, in relation to which rumors are eirenla., tea freely throughout the county. We had fully resolved, to pursue., that course in•-thiS ma tter, which an honest, independent fearless journal can adopt, with honor to itself, and in! the discharge of a responsible duty to the. community in which it exists. We were pre pared to shOw that in this county, justice bath been deliberately and shamelessly purchased,' even as cattle are bought and sold, and dri ven to the shambles. '4‘-'e were prepared to exhibit the startling fact, that official corrup tion was confined to no particular grade of crime; but that it extended through4l3C va 7 -rious ratnificatiettof the calandar, and made its iniquitous bargains - With gold. Well, we have been visited, and have had several con versations with friends in regard tothe charges. Strong argamenti have been used to deter as fro the promised publieation, nly one of - which has any weight with us, and defers for! the present, if legal steps are not taken in the matter, the publication of .all the fads which we possess, and all that we can gather in the future. That argumentis, ihat the exposure, at this period would defeat the steps - Which l are being taken to investigate the master. We rest satisfied for the present therefore, in - the full hope that the charges to which we allude, will be promptly the subject of strict, le_ gal' investigation. 1 If however, we should be dis-1 appointed—if no steps are taken to bring prch ininent public:Offenders to a strict account, we will be Prepa4d at a moment's notice, and re gardless of consequences, to expose all the facts of whieh we are cognizant. We favor, strongly the principle that the more promi nent add influential the offender, the - more se vere should be his-punishment. We' cannot therefore wink at crime in high places, and condemn the poor :wretch who does a wrong . possibly to save himself from a wretched end. With rescality, - as with despotism, a princi ple object is to muzzle the press. In the matter of' these charges for instance, it is pretty strongly intimated that if we make any unpleasant disclosures,- under that unjust law' of Pennsylva"ia, "the greater the truth, the; greater the libel," that the .CoUrt hCre would show very little mercy to Mi. It would not be, desirable to be placed in such a position—, 'still that would not alar4l 'us, confident that . we had served the cause of morality, and dis charged a duty to,. the citizens of Schuylkill county. We offer these few remarks -as an apology for the non-appearance -of what we promised should appear in t¢-day's - paper, in reference to current rumors of corruption, existing in high - official places iii our midst. WeLisish it distinctly understood, that . we are , deterred . at this time, only by the assurance that thopatter will undergo le, al investiga tion. the, public. should be cheated, and' 'we disaPpointed in this hope, we shall then act fearless of any threatened consequences. While. weconduct a public journal in this community, we will never hesitate to s eXpose corruption in .connection with public office, where. other means fail, and, denquitee crime especially in tho e whose prominent positions, should demand an integrity of con, duct, unswerving and incorruptible.
