Journal, we published An article art,'lbenab ject of Book peddling and secticag, and in reference toe certain liir:4odd l s ; l uveling -Bookseller now in Pottsville. On Tisueday he opened, or, attempted to open, Book Auctiourin a.iooso which he has rented, by a set timelrof an hour and a half in,.#ength, llll in which hti sought to iiditinia' - thip Amide! alluded to; and tyro. the turrezt puhlic opinion, by synipailietic tipped; to the joatri -018111 and feelings ot: Lis _ audience. _ 6 oding 'that feels were hard - subjects to:stum. ble upon, he VeryunfortunatelY Alluded -to the virtue of being an American citizen, fOrget-; ftil that respect and el xtdience our: laws. constitutes' the great principle upon which the virtue of being a citizen rests. 1 He also alluded to the privileges and rights of citizenship, dur liberties of speech and! action., but did not deign to consider, whilst, attempting to infringe upon the rights of oth*l era, that "right wrongs unholy." He appral. i ed to his- honesty his disinterestedness and iphilanthropy, in disseminating knowledge among you, as it 'you had never seen a book in your lives. or there was no place where. a good book could be sold in the community; fur he, concluded by saying in lan ir, nice% manner that he did not wish to "cram yam" 1 Now we happen to know Mr. Judd, much better perhaps than he does those whom he so wittily (I) alluded to as "roaring Boos, &c.,"; and when we tell yon that there is' not a shrewder business man, nor a keener penny-, saver to be found, you will believe us that he; is not much of a philanthropist. And not- 1 1 withstanding all his smooth pleadings * and sympathetic appeals for patronage and sup port, he is too deeply' interested ' in Western land investments, to allow of his being gen erous and liberal here, unless :yea choose to pay him dearly for it, 'which we think you will 'lnt , feel disposed to do under the circninstan cl, for though he haa tried fulsome flattery, yet his compliments have been eminently . un fortunate. In claiming that his rales would not affect the permanently established trade, he very ingeniously remarked that those who patronize him "were generally "empty treaded cople," which-we are inclined to believe, who / never think of going into a stationary book store to purchase, but are readily attracted by the novelties of an auction room. He tried to ridicule the idea of a circula ting medium, and said that money , would go when it was wanted (1) because we had said! that every dollar took from the place was! lost to the people here, which we do not think necessary to argue to your understanding; and because we said that we should be ashamed to thrust ourselves as a brazen-faced interlo- ! per, unasked and unwanted; Into a communi ty like this, under the presfnt circumstances,; as he has done. He tried to create a laugh among his tearers at our expense, but with out success ; though he made use of all the arts of the: lawyer, and some of those peculiar to the mountebank, - to effect his purpose.—. l The sympa hies of the audience were not with him, and his efforts at ridicule grew weaker and weaker, until not a spark of life or mean ing was left in them. He asked the audience repeatedly, in an artful 'manner, whether he should sell them hooka or not, agaiaet'the wishes and the interests—against tne op position of their own bookselleis, but not a word was uttered;and he at last concluded, after exhausting his arguments and wearying his audience, not to sell. Alluding to his respectability and popular ity with the people generally, he very modest ly(l) remarked, that when he left Lancaster, after residing theiis about ten years, the peo ple of that good city, seemed to think that their very pillar and support was being. with. drawn. - But we do not believe in all of Mr. Judd's disinterestedness. .He is too . much of a mon ey making, close-fisted man, to allow of his being very philanthropic ; in fact we never heard anything of the kind being attributed' to him. He claims the friendship of Judge Lewis, and says that the Judge will sustain him in the course he is pursuing. This is rather a singular kind of friendship that he is displaying, in going round the country,. the people that Judge Lewis will sustain hiM4and give a decision in support of the vi ¢lations of the laws, and that too, merely in favor, of a friend. The liquor dealers claim his friendship also, and state that he will give his decisions in their favor, but isomehow or other, they are slow in getting their cases before him. - -But we should think that instead of such charac.- tern bei: g the friends of the Judge, they are his most bitter enemies, and we cannot think I that 'the Judge would care to be found_ in such company. Mr. Judd will have an opportunity to test Judge Lewis' friendship, it he thinks that our Jiidges are governed by such motives in their I legal capacitiesi and insists ou carrying out his designs; for the booksellers of Pottsvilld are determined to carry the 'matter through: They are pot to be , intimidated, as others have been in neighboring towns, by a lawless stranger, who attempts by a profusion of harmless wotds to frighten people. Now, Mr. Judd cannot be as innocent a man as be pretends to be, for be knew before coming into Schuylkill County, that he was violating the ,laws of the State in coming here ; and he knew that to evade the law in other places, parties have been found dishon est 4 enough o trump up debts as subterfuges, and then g the Sheriff'to sell them off by auction. We do notinoir whether Mr. Judd bus resorted to these illegil practices or not hims'lf, but we know that he cannot be ig norant of the fact. . Mr. Judd speaks of his books being good, and from his manner of saying it, we should judge that he inten*d to convey the inipies sion, that other bnOks kept in, the place• were not. His may be good, but that would be an exception to the general rule with_ traveling book-sellers and peddlers, who generally carry around the most pernicious books, as we have every opportunity of knowing, from the appli cation of themselves, and those persons to whom they hare been sold, for books .of the ' , same kind. His books may be all he says they are, but it would be only one of the ex ceptions, which Mr. Judd knows as well as ourselves. Therefore, taking everything into consideration, we think the benefits conferred upon the community, by that Mode of distri buting books, are much more dim counterbal anced by the evils, flowing front the pernicious character of the immense amount of filthy and other trash, which is principally sold to the "empty headed," who attend auction sales, as Mr. :Judd asserted, which, we think ought to remain empty, rather than be filled with such matter, as can be gathered from them. - There would bo no inducement for a man to build up any business in country towns, were he likely to be interfered with, or were there no protection from such traveling har pies, all of whom do not hesitate to lie, as Mr. Judd, who appears to be one of the most res• pectable, did on Thins* evening. Men who establish themselves in a community, have a character at stake, which these travel. ing migratory persons have not, and a com munity that will not support their beein.ess men in preference to bud' Persona, are not worthy of having enterprising men locate themselves in their midst, end ought to be cut off from all : the Advantages that such men bring to a community where business is conducted fairly and honorably. We hive no room to discuss this subject further this week, neither do we think it ne cessary, since, after making a speech of in hour and a half, and uttering pathetic appeals to the people, to know whether be should gall cur nor, 'Pd mretinr , Kith nn rrTnno.", 0110 .15/41.4 41 :4.!.. 4141 1 1 4iff. 10.4 ' ,141 . MIL BANNS . AND THE SPILLICENNUIP.-:,-411 noticing the claims of Mr. Banks to the sup port of the Pennsylvania American delega tion for the position of Speaker of the na tional House of Representatives, ve are nat urally led to view his position on the question of Protection, of such vital importance to the interests of Pennsylvania. When it is aver red that Mr. Banks by his previous action in Congress, opposed those measures; we would ask what has been the course of prominent Pennsylvania sham Democratic representa tives in Congrefs, on the question of protec tion lb Pennsylvania manufactures?• What could'he expected of the representative of another and remote State, when our own rep-1 resentatives had not the manliness to stick through all opposition, to a measure of vital importance to the welfare of their constitu ents? To the vote of George M. Dallas, and the treacherous letter of the notorioua Judge Kane in the Polk and Dallai campaign, are the people of Pennsylvania indebted for the five trade policy which at this moment pros trates the energy, and causes. that depression in every branch of business so seriously and disastrously felt by the nation;„ Protection to American industry has always been and is still opposed by the sham Democratic party. We think that Mr. Bnks' former - course on • the question was pe fecdy right. As a rep mafresentative from sachusetts, a State inter ested in certain modlficatiotts of the tariff, it was his duty to join ulsue even with the oppo sition to Pennsylvania interests, to secure those features. Wecshould deem him recre ant to his trust if he had acted otherways.— And what aid we would ask, can we expect from other sections of the Union, if our own representatives in Congress desert the inter ests of Pennsylvania, at the moment she ex pects the most faithful fealty? Some years since when Henry Clay was appealed to, to advocate in the Senate, the protection of Pennsylvania's interests, he replied, "what is the use of my making speeches in the Senate in favor; of - that question, if Pennsylvania does not send men here who will advocate her interests." The story is here told in a few words. The fault lies with ourselves. We have reason now, to know that Mr. Banks is all right on the question of Prase tion, and that the American delegation in Congress,. from Pennsylvania, can consistently support him for the position of Speaker of the House. If elected we are assured that be Would never disappoint the expectations of those, to whom the protection of Arnerican industry is is cherished principle. . In reference to / Mr. Campbell's course in voting for Mr. Banks, we have before alluded, and we feel confident . that his action in the matter will receive thq watt approbation of the large majority—the most influential and intelligent of his constituents. We trust that the praiseworthy exertions of the friends of Mr. Banks to elect him will be crowned with success. He is eminently fitted for the po siton, and his sentiments are such that the American representatives Diu Congress, can with consistency support him. .• HOLLOWAY'S Otrtinetrr AND.
