Pottiiville will be the scene of one of tite‘most
interestiogrerenti of the character, ever wit. ,
need in Schuylkill County. The , betimiful
testimonial of our eiiizens to the tnemck, of
HEIM' CLAY, at this moment, with the
exception of a., few unimportant details, is
completed, will , be inaugurated on that i day,
with ceremonit of an imposing character,
calculated to, at ct to our Borough, not only
a great portion of the citizens of this County,
but thousands from a 'distance. The memo
tics . Which cluster around the public acts of
the immortal Statesman, reader the comple
tion and inauguration of this, the
. first com
pleted Clay Monument in the. United States
peculiarly interesting ; not only to this Regioii,
and thitState, but to the whole country, which
venerates and reveres the name of Henry Clay.
In connection with the completion of the
beautiful work, of art which now adorns Potts
/pile, we cannot refrain in noticing it, from
.alluding to the patriotic, disinterested, manly
izervices of SAMUEL Stt.t.Txzx, Esq., rendered
l'f'coln the purest motives which can animate the
'2 human breast, in securing the successful com
pletion of the Monument. No pecuniary sac
rifice. has deterred Mr. Sillyman in his deter
mination to see the work creditably executed;
and his spirit has enabled the Building Cora
, mittee to overcome obstacles which' nattily.
arose in its prosecution. To the exertions of
such citizens as Samuel &Hyman, are com
munities indebted for much that is useful and
ornamental, and for the exhibition of that
epergy which is so conducive to its social hap
piness and business prosperity. , •
• We have already given the programme of
!the procession which will take place on the
occasion of the inauguration of the Monu
ment, and the list of the invited guests, &e.
The orator of the "day will be the Hon.
CiLkai.c.s Ginacms, of Philadelphia, who has
accepted the invitation to that -effect. , Gov.
Pot.toce said other. .distinguished gentlemen
will also deliver addresses on the. occasion.
The Iron Column, of Grecian Doric archi
tectiare, rests upon asubstantial granite base,_
of two steps, the whole resting upon a ter
raced walk, 9 feet wide, of conglomerate stone.
Tli s e entire stone work compoiing the base of
the column is 15 feet in height, and is com-
._ posed of material taken from our own moms
_ tains. The column; which was., designed by
Frank Ilewson',,was cast in: , ,sections, to
the number of eight: Each section. is 5 feet,
..3 inches in height, and rests .upon its fellow
beneath on inside flanges, holted firmly to
' gether.. The total height of the cast irdn por
tion of the column is 51 feet' the extreme
height from the lower portion of the base, fie)

column and statue,)-of the Monument, is 45i
tons: On Saturday last/the column way rea•
ply to receive the statue, and Mr. John' Tein
ple, by the aid of twelve males, succeeded in
drugging the ponderous figure iip the steep
ascent necessary to reach tli column; and on
Tuesday, Mr: Waters Chillson, the builder of
the Monument, after consuming one ho . ur and
lilty minutes in raising it, placed the masterly
r. , presentation of the deceased Statesman on
it 3 lofty pedestal, amid the bciotning of can
non, and the' cheering of a large crowd assem
bled in the vicinity. The statue Was at first
;;lated facing the east;' but it being discov
ered that a northerly facing, that is towards
Pottsville, would be more effective, the fob
• ;
lowing. day the judicious' change was made.
rie statue. which by the way is 15 feet in
le:ight, and weighs between 7 and 8 tons, is
the work of Mr. Robert World, of Philadel
phia, and notwithstanding it is the first colos
,,al iron casting of the description ever exe
cuted in this country, is in Our opinion, re
n trkably fine, both in form and feature. The
feltures of the statue are lifelike and.expres
t.iv,y, and can he easily recognized as a correct
representation of Mr. Clay's face, even from
the depot of the Reading Rail Road Compa
ity, several hundred feet distant ; The atti
t u•le will he readily recognized by those who
have enjoyed, the privilege oPwitncssing Mr.
Clay in. the United States Senate, while' the
Ststesman addressed that. body. The im-.
moose weight of the statue, rendered it qilite
a delicate operation for Mr. Chillson, to place
it safely upon its pedestal; Wit by bracing, the
derrick, which was 82 feet high, by means of
a stout rope connected with the legs of the
r:atne,lte succeeded with the aid of 6 men
and a "crab wench" in placing it without acci
dent in its appropriate position. 'G. B. h'iss-
•,lor & Brother moulded the iron coluinn and
capitv.l; and Wren, Brothers& Co., were the
'emu:tilers of the entablature. 'As a work of art,
the Monument - in every departnient reflects
credit upon the designer ; l'upon those who
executed the designs, and upon the builder.

nic College in our city, nearly twO years ago,

The plan includes a sehool of engineering, of
mechanics of chemistry and of mines. The
