TEMPERANCE MEETING IN PHUADA.
PHILADELPHIA, sth month, 12th, 'di.
FRIEND BANNAN:—Tby earnest 'and consisttiut
advocacy of the great temperance reform bas
rondo thee many friends, I presume also Many en
emies. No man can set forth in a plain, truthful
manner the flagrant wrongs - , and unutterable
abomination of ruin-selling. and Lager-drinking,
u About rousing the wrath of those classes who
are implicated in these things. No man likes to he
told that he is pursuing a business flagrantly and
flagitiously - wrong. It is not .enough to he ran- ;
delolo of tilt fact, without having it put to him in
plain English. Hence the terrible indignation of
these men, when the truth is plainly - set before
them. The bill to restrain the sale bf into:Oen
ting liquors which the fate Legislature passed,
has occasioned a wonderGul commotion in our city.
Tho liquor dealers have no patience with such freu
ay and fanaticism. They 'say the friends of i
temperanie arc running stark used. They make
piteous, doleful complaints that their business is
interfered with, their gains cut off merely to.grat
ify the wild fanatics. There are sepia curious
,facts stated in regard to the injittenem these mon
tried to bring to bear upon the members of the
LegislatUre, to -prevent the' passage of the bill.-- - 1
It is said' they raised and sent to Harrisburg thirty-,;
eight theusand dollars to be used as,the ekigeneice '
of the ease might require. Is this true, thee wall
ask? I do not say positively that it is, but this
can be prure4, that a subscription was cirenlateio
among the rum sellers, and men who are known
had their 'names attached to it, fitly dotterr, fifty
dollars, fifty guitars, marked paid. Tbismas

keep legislation in tome way, or as politicians say,
it was to be used us a lueubrator; to grease the
machinery and keep the ponderous ear which cur
ried 131) law-makers to move on stuoothly with
out so Muth. friction. But thirty=Cight, thousand
dollars thee will say,_ is a large sum. How hap
pened it that it did not better accomplish eh
jeetTor which it , was, designed ? will tell thee
'
Benjamin what I have 'heard :=Seventeen thous
and, TiVehundred dollars were entrusted to one
esteemed and faithful disciple of Bacchus, but he
proved treacherous. The temptation was too
strong for his virtue ; so he bends word that all
was right, and decamped to "pari , i unknoica."—
This in reported, and I suspect there is .some
truth in it. But can't the scoundrel be arrested
and pUnished? some of thy readers may inquire.
Not a bit of it. Ho gave probably no more than
hie "word of honer" for the faithful disbursement
of the, funds with which he was entrusted: It was
the "Ode of honor!' that prevails among thieves,
and if he chose to play truant and violate his
pledge, he knew he could do it with impunity.—
When I heard this fiact I was glad the-tuan ran
off. Seventeen thottsand five hundred dollars,
had it been used as it was intended, would very
likely have done no little mischief It niiyht have
prevented the passage of the bill; certainly it
wouldhaire.been a sore temptation spread before
some members of the legislature. Some of those
men were weal: in resolution when a valuable con-;
ifderatien stared them iu the face,f or else they ; l
are grievously slandered. I am a little afraitt
some of them, not all,,,far front it, were susceptible
to polite, pecuniary jai/Howe.
Our city papers that have taken strong, decided
grourolin favor of the bill have been violently ass
sailed. The Saii, edited by:/James Wallace, bas
been a bold and fearless advocate of strong mess
urea to arrest the terrible evils of the. rum traffie.
James iS not:that:elf a tee-tOtallei f that he Wants
everybody to understand; ;,.hut he fights like it
Trojan for Prohibition. Alexander CummingS„
editor of the Evening Bulletin, is now bitterly as
sailed.' 'Alexander introduced the bill, and ably
and successfully advocated it in the House.,The
hotel keeperi and all the rum sellers are - levin
upim him in great wrath. I was told on last fifth
day, that they had all stopped his paper. The
friends of the good cause will. I trust, see to it,,
thitt the patronage of' these worthy men withdrawn

enced by passion and picjudice.. N, B. Brovirie
did nobly in the Senate. The bill would, not have
passed that body hid it, not been fors : his earnest,
utitiring efforts. But the Temperance Metsting.— .
This is the caption of my epistle, and yet Ihavb"
run on to' this point without a word. about' it.—
Well, such , a meeting - was held last fifth day nt
Concert Hall, and it was a full. inspiring, enthu
siastic gathering of the friends of the good cause.
Robert, our Mayor, presided. Several good pepcb
es were made, a series of resehitions passed,
the affair went Off M good, style. Thy friend
