COAL yEasus WOOD.—The Lowell (Mass.)
News gives the result of a trial of the relative
cheapness of wood and coal for fueh, as follows:
The whole distance run; was 2366' miles, of
which 1868 miles were with freighi using one
cord of wood in twenty.six miles, 0;6:v-eight
cords at $7, amounting! to $474 and 598
miles withpassenger!, using one cord of wood
in thirty miles, amounting to $199151. Total
expense of 'working by wood, $615 51. The
expense of running the:same distance with
.coal, at the rate of s6 s
0 per ton, the cost in
Boston; amounted to $265 46, being a miring
in favor of coal $350 05, or above one half.
This is quite an item.

prime• Potatoes, have arrived at Philadelphia
from Nova Scotia. during the past week, and
