Last evening, however, the Academy war densely
crowded to.hear the first representation of Rossi

The German opera is still at Niblo's, and are to
treat us to-night with "Romeo :Did Juliet."
Forrest is starring at the Broadway to his usual
audiences, very large. The Metropolitan is closed.

Our community have instinct with a loss in th e
death of Walter It. Jones, widely and favorably
known as the most prominent man of the Insu
rilne bledueSs. - At the time of his deE•case he was
President of the Atlantic Mutual Company of the
Board or Underwriters. His funeral yesterday at
Trinity, was largely attended by the. solid loco of
. New York. IHe was one of our most worthy' as
well as prominent citizens.
'The long discussed question of the new City
Hall has at length been settled as far as the re-,
port of the Committee is concerned, who unani-:
mously reported in favor of what is called the
Gilbert plan.' This, we believe, contemplates the
erection of a hollow square; of which the present
City Hall will form ono side. The materials to
be white Marble, and its capacity about two hun
dred and fifty rooms, at an expense of two and .a
half tuillionsi This last item would undoubtedly
be doubled by the actual facto of construction, if
experience in public buildings is any criterion.
-The Liquor bill has become a law by tho signa
ture of thd :Governor, although notice of a bill
providing rot' its repeal, has been already given in
our legislattire. The liquor interest of our city
is determined to fest Alie question at the very out
set. The firk day of its operation will furnish
abundant eiiims. The generally received opinion
is that the unconstitutionality of some of its pro
visions will prove fatal to its permanence. We
believe that:it will never be carried out, at least
in its present shape.
The following extract from a correspondence in
Nova Scotia, may be of interest. He Writes frind
Pietott, tinder date of March 26th, as follows:
"The pchple of this port aru looking forward to
an increased Coal trade this season, which I think
will ho realized; as the duty will be removed from

the Coal of this province and retained on all other
foreign Cent You may with certainty inform
your renders that we shall be enabled to ship die
present ylia!r 150,000 chaldrahs, tieing an excess of
about 50,001) over last year. The present superinten
dent of the. ,tiaines, (James Scott, Esq.,) is an active,
practical Man e just such an one as the company
needed to_ advance their interests. From the ex

received. ymi may rely on his statement as correct.
Some intluiries are making here relative to Coal
freights, but.nothing definite can be learned. My
own impretision is as follows:—To Boston from $3

commit, with their uplifted skirts. I verily believe
that the passions which are excited in men by wit..
nessing the display which any rainy day makes
in Broadway, in the way of lags and ankles, does
more than any one other : lining to fill our houses
of prostitution at night.
There has been published in Paris a series of
finely colored engraving,'entitled "Le Finales der
rieurr." ! Most persons at all posted up, hare seen
them, and need not be told what they are. Hence
forth we need not go abroad for-illustration. New
York can furnish all that is required in that line.
