We have now in our possession, for safe keeping, and as a nucleus of a collection of curiosities, some very curious and singular ar ticles made of copper. They were found near the west shore of the river, about a mile above the mouth, at a place where now is a brick yard and these acre disinterrM by those dig ging in search of good brick clay. Atler ta king off from the surface of tlie.gromid about tWo feet of sand, the clay was exposed, and the stump of a tree was discovered. • Digging.. 'still lower. about six Or eight inches into the' clay, and overturning the stump these articles were brought to light: First, a Copper Spear, about 14 inches in, length, and at its base a groove or dovetail is made, in which to insert :a wooden shaft or' handle. Two other spears, each about twelve inches in length, and similar to the first. Third, two pieces of copper that had evident ly been very nicely forged; but for what pur poses they could ever have been applied, is by no means plain; and it is quite difficult to give in writing a clear dacription of them. As good an idea of their shape, however, can he got by supposing them to be the mu'- lrix imwhich was east one of the spears.— This is not, hciwever, the purpOse to which they were applied. It is far more 'likely they were used as cutting tool, but then there i:s no means apparent by which the. implement can be held—no place for fastening it .to a handle. These are al:out 14 inches long and tw; I inches wide. Upon one end there is the up- pearanee of an attempt to make •a - cuttimr, s• edge. They weigh about three `pounds• each, and are specimens of good Iyorkrnanship. The question, naturally arises, who, made these things? Did the earliest :French tlis coverers make them? Or are they the workof a race long ago extinct—the same who. first opened these Jnines ? • It seems to us—for we can only indulge in speculation .011 the subject—that• these tools could not have been the work of the Europe.. ens who came' here, for they would not have made a tool like the last two, about the use of: which we should be ignorant. They are i-natle of copper, a material not nearly', so good as iron or steel, for cutting pqrpeses, the menu-_ facture of which they were flimilitir with, and: would most likely bring with them. • Our-Indians do not, - nor have they; the skill or implements to work so well, any metal, and they are all ignorant of the of such tools. They have among them traditions of the ex istence of a race of men, 'to whom they in scribe all the gkill, neveseary to accomplish these workings we lineal the mines, and make, the tools we now find. . Oue of our r ioncers Temarked, n bile exam ining them; that • the-cuts lei finind at the Minesota mine, when he first, opened the an-, cient Biggins there, corresponded to the shape and size of the cutting edge of these. That these tools are the work of those who lived here years ago, seems ihc more likely from the place and position in which they were found, beimg in the strata of clay, lying under the roots tif a stump, and about 40 feet above the present level of the river and lake. The tree had grown up since these articles had been put there, and the deposit 'of sand made above the clay the depth of 'two feet.— To du that, the river and lake must have been 40 feet higher than, its present level. This of 1 1 , .-- ASTIV: A "PEW IC- orT•Or Cut grit.—We course wits years ago, before! the tnemory of I are indebted to our friend, J. 31. EYES.—Until one begins to feel the effect of impaired : vision, he can hardly estimate the value. of eyesight, and consequently, from ignorance, or carelessness, he is apt to neglect a few simple precautions, by the observance of which,- hiS sight might be preserved. We are aware that the eolumns of a newspaper do . not afford the space, - Mir is an editor qualified to treat scientifically of the injuries which. accrue to the organs of vision: but certainly the knights of the sane.- tum ought to have some practical experience upon artificial light, more of which they con sume than falls to the lot of other men. Let us then give our readers a few hints upon the preservation of sight, - which : we de-, duce frOm our own experience, and if we are incorrect, our medical friends, and particular ly opticians, aro welcome to our columns, to correct our errois. We are no about to in terfere with those who liar° resorted to stec taelo, for the Opticitui-olone can benefit them; ;but there are multitudes, who, rha s• by they confess, that time has taken too strong hold upon them.' Such ask, whether they'can see better than they mivido .without the,nse of glasses? To - the most of these we answer, yes—provided you will follow these simple di rections :-First, never use a Writing. desk, or table with your face towards n,:, window. In such a case, the rays .of light Come directly upon.the pupil.of the cycs, ana causing an unnatural • and forced contraction' thereat, soon pernianentlY injures the sight. It is best always 'to sit or stand while !I reading or writing with - the window I)eltirid you: and next to that with the ljght coming over your left sidethen the light illumines the paper or book and does not shine abruptly upon the eye ball. The same remarks are applicable to arti- - I fieial light.
