February 10. Mb ..- ' • a. , ; farmer. • „„ m a r GREAT BARN—Dyrid Leavitte, of ,New York city, recently purchased a far t , in !Berkshire county, Mass., upon which he baS erected a barn of unequalled sizes and novelty, which is reported to have cost $4O, 000.. ' nas barn is built across the bed of Ismail mill-stream which is soon after lost in the llessatonic, and which, thoughlargely fed by springs, is here in such immediate prOxim'ity tsi the steep Berkshire hills, eivhence it rapidly d'e'scends, that it must often be swelled to ; raging, desolating mountain torrent. Aerr es this stream a very substantial dam.-of rut stone, filled in with earth, is thrown just above the i barn, forming a Sue fish pond above, at fording's good water power and, supplrin s water in every part of the barn and for every conceivable purpose. The, barn itself should judge to be about One hundred and fit. • trfeet long by'seventy in width, and nearly one hundred feet high. :The basement (of cut stone) is of course de:voted to manures, which, without waste and by mechanical arrangements, are precipitated ft.Crn the cattle-stalls on the next story. This basement has a tight stone-floor, is always criorin' summer and warm, in whiter, and twenty carts may be driven in at one end; loaded simultaneously, sand driven out 'at an. ether door. - No frost ever enters, and the m ince is usually removed every month and ap. Plied directly to the land. The advantage 'of being able to work here in comfort durin g the most inclement weather, and to sled out the compost in winter—taking a load to up ISnYI and bringing-back a load of cord -wood to the railroad—is esteemed considerable. On the next floor are the cattle and horse!, including more, than fifty milk cows, mainly -- fine Devpns, with three or four working oxen arid as many teams of - horses. Each is kept . in its place by a long strap buckled around Ids neck; but giving each ample freedom in lick every part of its body, which is deemed Inaportant. Food and drink are given to each in a large trough or manger resembling a quarter of a large potash kettle, with one cit. CulSr and two square sides. The water floss Within easy reach everywhere. The stalks, loots, &c., are all cut or sliced before feeding nad are ultimately to be steamed by a gigan tic boiler on the premises. At the end of Bach long row of cow-stalls hangs a large , black-board, bearing at the left side the num ber of each stall in a perpendicular column; cm a horn of the occupant of said stall a cor responding number is impressed; and when ever she lisas, been milked r her pail is immedi. ntely set in'the weigh-scales, the Weight of the ;nail& ascertained and placed opposite her linimber on the black•board; and at the end each week, the aggregate weight ef milk And its ascertained value are carried to the Cow's credit in an account book, where her ; food is in like manner charged; and if any ;cow proves on a year's trial unprofitable, she. is sold off and another put in her place. The animals of course are clean, fat and eomfon able. They are only turned out in mild wea ther for a short time at mid-day, and it is oh. Served that they might be kept ninety sums inve days in the stable without injury or suf. ' fering. The milk-room is directly north () the stable, under the . carriage way - , with an 'arched stone roof and'a capaciou's stotf ice at the far end. The room is well tempered,' 'of course may be warmed in winter if neces nary, has water-pipes running through it, and :ice within arm's length of the milk pan. I On the next higher floor is a capacious kitch len and all convenience for the famil• who 'board the workmen (fourteen to twenty in num. ber) who sleep in a spacious chamber still higher. The family never have to move mit, of their special premises for water or any nth -er necessary to their labor. Their slops fall' into the basement where they belon. On this floor are a Woodruff Planing' Ma chine, a Saw-Mill, a Buzz Saw for cutting wood about as fast-as it can be handed on, a. grind-stone always kept in rapid motion by , water, &c., &c. Into one apartment a load of grain is driven and pitched off into a hopper. thence run by water through a Thrashing Machine, the screened grain delivered in its proper bin, the chaff , sent to its appointad des tination, and the straw carried some sixty to eighty feet and deposited in the apartmcnt prepared for it—all beyond the pitching be ing done by the unaided force of water on ma chinery. VerSHAPI2CG TREES AND SRat'n5 r .—Who has not observed the great difference in tier, ty between a handsomly dressed tree, and one of uncouth or distorted form of the same sr& Mes? How often:do, purchasers of ornament al shrubs and trees anxiously,Search for sym metrical specimens—forgeting, or not know ing, that the most irregular may be easily t r, pruned into any desired shape.
