work, the wonders of wiiiih can be bin im- !
perfectly described, and natsirt -the seen-to be
apprectited. For a distance ctlgi e r thirty I
miles it traverses one of the. ivilf ' Anion- I
lain wildernesses in the cou ntry; where-.not
merely the dense and scarcely p,enetfable.i
forest seems to awallovisaip the.*biile"land-
scape, but where the surface traversed. is so ;
broken up by numerous lofty heights with 1
abrupt sides, nod Intermediate gorges of ,
great extent and depth, as seemingly to defy;
the skill of the engineer seeking to, find a I
route practicable for railway travel.'.in this
great wilderness the road finds a irtsgage by :
means which astonish the beholder, as lie:',
priceiyes it winding around the sides of ,
great steeps, scaling montainous: h'eights:l
striking through tunnels perched far Abort. I
the level of the sea. or leaping across broad i
valleys or • hollows by stupendous bridges;
Irvin which the traveller looks forth in awe. 1
There are three tunnels on the route. ''the ,
first, called the "new tunnel,".is 2)0 feet in 1
length, the to cond at the summit ) and so des-.;
ignated, is 1200 feet long, and the third tall-
ed the "little tunntl,"is 400 feet long..- 7
There are seven bridges; viz: Dark Run,-
569 feet long ; Little Catawissa, 1100 feet ;
Siran-_:er's Hollow, 300 leer ; Long 11.,110w.
81)0 feet ; Mine Gap, 610 feet ; Fisher's
Run. 800 feet; Furnace Run, 800 feet. All of
these bridges are throwna - diosi gorges broad
and deep, and in traversing them the spec
tacle presented from the car windows; rcpt?.

•ut the bridge across the little Cetawissa
creek, Which is 1100 feet in le:0014 is same-.
thing meriting more than a pnssing tonic&
.This bridge stands at a height of:l3U 141
above the bed of the creek, contandmr-Ode
rndlioti feet of lumber, and cost bopoo dol
lars. The tressel-work is of the most pic
turesque and ingenious kind, and whether
seen from oh tee (4 below. strikes the be.
holder with wonder. In crossing it the road
seems from the car windows to be irsveltdi
through the air, yet is perfectly assure, and
does not even exhibit a tremulous motion as
the train passes over it.. • ... •
There is, indeed, alonethe whole eiturse
of the road a solidity of consfructiou visible
which cannot fail to attract' notice. The
amount of solid ma.o.nry i=, we believe,
without parallel'. Where, in post mod
ern road., contractors merely built' earth
work embankments, the butid,rs of the Cat
awis.a road have eructed great walls o 1
stone, -which impart a singularly fittitdied e p.
mama& to the road, while they Contribute
to increase its strength. One of the *most,
beautiful iloiugh seemingly perilous of these
passages. is where the road strikes across
Negro Hollow, btmeans of what elsewhere,
would be an embankment, but which here is
guarded by perpeildicular walls of masonry
ou either side. On this the road executes
a curve, necessitated by the location oh
mountain heights oh unti.ual steepness in.
the vicinity. At :either end of this passage
the traveler surveys from the ear window
the whole of the horse shot bead traversed
by the road.
