UATIIOI.IU KIDNAPPING
One day last week an attempt was made
by, two Irish Catholic women. to kidnap in
orphan 'girl, near Boston, in. order to place,
her under the influence a their own teligi
olis faith, because it vrai suspected she was
liktly to become a Protestant. A. writer in
the Phapelphia Register, though using mild
language, snakes some 'very apropos and for
eib!e comments on thiS ease, as
This.reminds us strongly that we ought
never to ask of another an unjust thing, one
which, were circumstances changed, so us
'to put us in the other's stead, 'we would. not
l?e, willing to do. The 'Catholics say, that
they are conscicittiously opposeeto the Prot- .
estant common Sellouts, and conscience
in this matter cannot be forced. Now it is
folly admitted that conscience cannot be
ectl. But was there not in the ease mention
ed an attempt- 7 111a to, operate on the mind,
and-show that . the,Catholic religion is better
than the Protestaut, all or which, live think,
would have been right and fair-ibut a vio

of our Government on this veer subject, and

CAST-IKON CANAL LOCK.
This work in the Philadelphia &Sunbury .
Railroad Company's, basin, at Sunbury, is
now completed, with , the exception of: the
balance beams. With perhaps one excep
tion, it is the largest lock in the United
States. Kirhber Cleaver; Esq., was the orig.
inator of the 'design. The America* de
*tribes it as follows : '
" The foundation of this -- lock, .whiCh
forms the inlet to the railroad companes-ba
sin and the canal company's water power, is
solid rock, found saute ten ket below the
surface of the water ititbe river at low wa.
ter. The dimensions are as follows :—Leogth
100 feet ; width, 32 feet ; height, from the
floor to the caps, 20 feet.. Itito trenches ex
cavated from the rock are sunk longitudinally
yellow .pine sills. secured in their places by
ceineut grouting. Oa these are laid trans
verse sills, on which are placed ninety col
umns of east iron in the A shape, the vertical
side of which is on the inside of the lock.—
These colt:mos are Secured to both setts of
sills, by screw bolts, whose tensile 'strength
is calculated to sustain a much greater pres
sure .that can iu any event be thrust upon
them, Against these columns, forming the
chattiber of the luck.. rests a walk of 3 inch
plank, whose' joints • are broken by inch
boards, both of which are fastened to the col
umns by key bolts and east iron clamps.—
These clamps are construct - ed with continu
ous projections to guard the ends of the key
bolts hum injury. Behind this wall of plank
conies a layer of cement, rendering it imper
riot's to leakage, balked by another wall of
of plank of equal thickness. , At thiliack of
this the : whole spare is securely puddlect.—
The. wings extend 25 feet on each aide, front
and back, abd are ciinsiructed is the same
manner as the chamber.
