Ili COAL -lIS. BONE AND Sirmw.—Prof.
Henry. President of the SMitbsonian Insti
tute of Washingtou;says:
" It has been proved that, on an average,
four. ouncis of coal are Sufficient to draw on
a railroad, one ton a mile.' ' It has alsolbeen
found by experiment :that a man working on
a tread mill continually &riled boars, will
elevate one and one-hall millions of pounds
one loot bigb. Now" good Cornish engines
will perform - the same work by the expendi
ture of a pound and,a half of coal. It fol
lows from there data that about' five, tons of
,coal would evolve as much '"power during its
' combustion as would be equal to the con
tinued labor of an able-bodied man for twen
-1 ty years, at the rate of eight hours per day ;
or, , in other words, to the iiverage power of
a man - during the.active period of his tile.

B. 13 - ANNAN—Dear Sir :—Having a half hour of lei.
sure this morning, I have concluded to devote it to
you, in. throWing, together sonic information which,
to know, may please you and lour readers. On
visiting the lidehmond*Wharves to-dav, 'I was us ;
tonished to find so little coal on them; I Should judge
that the whole quantity at present does not exceed
ten thousand tons. At many'. of the -wharves it I
would be difficult to get a vessel loadeil promptly
with a cargo of merchantable coal. In addition
this, the shipments atlßichniond, are one hundred
and twenty-tour thousand behind, the same' period
last year, and it is said bY thonelamil tar with the fart:,
that the deficiency at Bristol in not much if anyhe
hind this qauntitv, making the aggregate deficiency
from the two shippini points, about a quarter of a
mutton of tens. lit noithis a Startling developement
and is it net astonishiOg trader the circumstance',
that coal ban not advanced in price more than it has.
If the prognostics of the weather-wise pepp:e should
prove correct, " that we are to have a severe• win
ter, after so hot a Summer," is there not a fitir
chance that our: friends in New York and New
England may suffer acme thin rwinter. In (muse

Southern cities, freight* hate ruled much lower

Coastwise transportation, catinot be expected much
longer, as the Southern vessels will soon return to'
their accustomed channels ot,business. The pros
perous appearance of the coat trade for the present
and the future has induced the Lnorifsg ones to in-
Vest largely during the last few days, iu the stocks
of our Canal nud Itailroat.: Securities, sending up

of surprise to. those most -laminar with the Coal

Chau, Chins, we hive the following intelligences
from Rev. Dr. Wiley, dated at Peh•Caae, Kay
Oth. which isat your service. Respectead
J. P. DURBIN, Cer. 2 J I.
I must now communicate some othee
impotent matters. You will hare baud
through our brethren at Hong Koss an se- •
coup i ; t2l the difficulties which bare unexpet•
edly • arisen at Amoy, and • which threw is
into* immediate danger bete. This MOTI. ,
merit' has come upon us all very suddenly
and without any previous indications.
" As ye{ the insurgents bare no connec
tion with the Northern revolutionary army
but doubtless the insurrection is only, anoth
el expression of the rebellions feeling asking
throughout the country.
" Bre. Doty, of Amoy, informs us that the
rebels have addressed a communication to
the' ArMy in the North proposing to join it,
and that the immediate object of the move
'the capture of this province. which
•
they design to present to the new Emperor.
" On the • 20th inst. a large part of thew
force left"Amoy en routq for Fah-Chau.
whicbiZ they say, they will attack by sea and
by. land. •We are nine-in daily expectation
of their arrival here.
" The people areconsiderably excited, bet
the authorities have succeeded in pentrading
them that there is no danger of an attack on
this city, which does much to calm them.
and which will probably have thegoed effect
of.keeping things quiet until the rebel forces
are upon us, when we think we will beta
safety. •
"It is scarcely tr i be, expected 'that all
Ithings will pass off mai smoothly at Fah-Chime
as they did at Amoy.' This is the provin
cial city, and is defended by a Tartar gayer , •
son, which will, of course, present some re•
bistance to the rebel troops.
"The people will•olfer no resistance. Al
far as we can learn they lucks favor of tlse '
insurrectionary movement and will be glad
when they are placed under new masters,
though they would like the transition to be
made without a contest. '

• We 'must- bave battle at Full•Chau.--
The'coutest will probably be short, &id Oa
cipally confined to thecity. All the mission
ary la nit ilies _have concen 'rated thew-selves=
the island, and together we will swill the
attack.
•• We have no indication that either.party
has any wish to interfere. With us. On- the
coniraiy, from the rebels we hafe positive
assurances of their protection after they have
retched the city, and our hope is that tie
presentauthornies will be able to keep down
all riotous excitement until the forces of the
rebels come upon the city.
"Yet we ituew not what awaits us. Al'.
severe trial lies before its, and we must m t
it. May. God give us grace to meet It with
Christian - I.4iitulie and tesignauon, and easy
ble us to glorify hun in the midst at these try.

means of safety we shall be obliged torsion.
Perhaps we shall be compelled to resort to
