POLITICS AN D TO E MAINE LAW.
The necessity for some prompt, energetic,
decisive action by the community with re.,
gard to the Legalized Liquor Tratfic,.is so
palpable, so urgent and so generally conce
ded,' that its ',enemies dare not boldly con
front and deny it. They. dodge behind this
cavil and that' party 'Danner, nod manifest
their consciousness that. public sentiment is
against them by laboring and scheming to
avoid any dectSive action ire the premises.--
If the object of their real conccru were the
safety and integrity of thisor that party or
ganization, they would unite in say iog—
" Let us settle this Maine Law question at
once by referring it to the people, and agree
ing to abide their decision. • (This was
lately done is Michigno, and the people ata
special election decided, by 119,000 majority,,
or about two to one, that no more intoxica
ting beverages should be sold in the -State,
unless in defiance of law and in Mil prospect
of a penalty.) Thus no ptty lines are bro
kenoind the people may go on disputing and
dividing about national politics as hitherto,
if they perceiee adequate reason for so'doing.
Temperance,certainty,will not prevent them,
and . ,, intemperance will have to bring the
question intopolittes, if it' shall be brqught
there. , So long as the minority respect the
express decision of the people, and da not
seize upon the machiuery of one or the - other.
party whereby to smuggle :in a Legislature
that will defy, ,the popular Verdict and repeal
the Maine Law, there need not be a ripple of
temperance agitation across, the regular trade,
winds of politics.
Then why don't the Cincinnati Enquirer
and other journals, which manifest so tender
an anxiety that the Maine Law agitation shall
r injure the Democratic party, just unite to ta
king the temperance enestion out of politics
by agreeing to submit the question of Maine
Law or no Maine Law toe direct vote 'of the
' whole people of their resp ective &mei ? It
by Democracy they mean something else than
rum, why should they demur to this?
We
We are, by turns, accused of laboring to
Ldestroy the Whig and the Democratic party.
[ Possibly sve• have less, reverence for, these
two organizations than some of their most
ardent adm trete and beneficiaries may cherish,
vet it iS - glaringly untrue that we advocate the
"Maine Law. with any . sinister intent what- i
ever. We certainly 'du cherish' the hope that,
when all our citizens shall have become hab
itually temperate, the country will be ruled
and. guided, with far more intelligenee, vir
tue, uprightness and frugality than iritow is.
If this should prove prejudicial to either par
ty, that 'that party ought to be prejridiced ;
it it should upset both patties, then the time,
has arrived when both parties ought to be'
upset t• but our guiding impulse is hot the
overthrow of this ofthat jiarty, tett tbe sup
pression of intemperance through• the-pas
sage and enforcement of the Maine Law.
Let t,t be: clearly understood, then, that
the adedersernes of 'she Mime Law have hith:
erto had full power to t a ke that subjeg out, of
polities. but have steadily ••e.jused to do so.--f
They have been
- challenged and' entreated to
unite in submitting the 'question distinctly
to the people at a special election, and im
plicitly abide their decision. 'Phis vies not
been docie siinply because they would not let
it be done. In the Legislature' of New York,
New Jersey, Connecticut tiud Ohio, they have
defeated bills providing to submission,whieb
were, supposed' and pretsedby thetempe
tenet men in snlid'eolurcin. Now they will
be very likely, in view off - the popular' tide in
favor of'No License, -to Offer to compromise
on submission. Perhaps the fiteads.or tem
perance. so long defied 'or trifled with; will
meet them at that half !way honse;..hnt we
do not believe it. There is no longer need
of submission; since every one knows what
the result would be. ,This Stite•would tat.

The recent appearauctiof a celestial stran

at Gotteggena by Islii-lllnikerfues, and it is
regarded en rematkably brighta rid beautiful.

high angles ,at - 40!'-o to; 85 towards the

in a line diritetty opposite to the sun, which
therefore folloWs them cif, they approach the
the sun; sad goes befog* them as they leave
the tan, and na head or tail as their pin
thins vary. Comets have large atmospheres,
and according, toisonteastrensomen, they
are all atmosphere. Thus, then, 'the sae's
rays pass through the Spherical atmosphere,
just like light through? a glass globe ; and
and the projectionAocreeses in length, as; it

comet has a distinct nucleus, the i projection.
is Melded in the. Mold:* by a sensible line.
These projections are Millions of miles Icing
—some eXtend, even to-150,000,000 of miles.
The first cornet ihat svas discoveied amide
scribed accurately.teas by Nicephorous. •At
the Firth of the great Mlthridatss,!. 135 8.C..
two lirgeceniets appiated, which were seen
for 72 days together. i Their splendor, says
Ando, eclipsed that of the mid-day sun—
probably an ancient eiaggerationj---and they
occupied a fourth art of the heavens. Du- •
ring the reignol 'the Emperor Justinian, io
the early part of ' the 'math century, three
comets Were visible at one time.; These, as
dul,the phenomesta et the bulk of Mahn
dates, excited the' terror of the ;superstious
-indeed of all mankind, the more eapecial
ly is both periodt wetedistinguisha by war,
pestilence' and famine. A most brilliant
modern comet appeared in 1769,sind paSsed
within 2.000,900 Irritles of the' earth: One
still more brilliarq appeared in September,
October and Notlecnher, 1811, and was visi
bleat! the *ululate with the naked eye. :An
other cornevappeired in 1828—while in 1841
there vas one "at 'enormous magnitude] but
without any solid; looking nucleus, or body.
This opparition Willi be remembered by most
at our readers. lit only reinsitted . in Sight

sou iheastward With incredible velocity. i To
the eye of the common observer, when: first
seen above the western horiZon, its coma or
tail must have Leen nearly 100 deg. in leegth.
Dr. - Dick, in his; celebrated work on. Celestial
Scenery, devote*.considerable space ici the
physical constitution of comets. Thd nu
cleus he regards is the solid - or densest
pin of the comet 4 Some suppose: that
the nuclei of comets are transparent, as
well as their :nebulosities, and allege
as a proof, that stars have been seen through
a nucleus. Tine of such statements
is however, questioned. -

In respect so the tail, or lummouso, train
which. generally accompanies! comets; it is
found; that it Is geetrolly to Opposition to
the, sun, ° s emi, the prolougations of the line
which would join the sun and the nucleus.
But this is not always the case. Sometimes
the direction or the tail has been. found at
right angleS with this line; and in some ex
treordioary; instances, the tails of comets
hafe been observed to point directly towards
the sun. 1 Thioi wathkease with a comet

the other was'onlyf 34 'deg., and it wasbright
enough to be sects with an opera glass. In
general, hriweyer, it is found that the tail
inclioes constatitlyi, towards the regiOn last
qujutd bylthe Comet; as if in its progress
through ametheriail medium, the matter for
ming it- experienced more resistance than
that of the noetens. The tail is geberally
enlarged in proportion to its distance from
the head of the co met, and in certain cases
it is divided into several branches, as already
noticed of the!colitnet of 1807. Some haVe sup
posed than the divided tail is nothing more
'than a perispectivi repreientatioia of thesides
of it great hollow @one ; but there are certain
tibservatiOns;whiCh seem to prove, that, in
some cases, theyhave a separate existence
as independent b ranches. The most remark
able instance of a ;divided tail was :in the
comet of :'1744. 1 On the 6th and =7th of
,March. there weie f eiz branches .in ihe tail,
each of them • abbut 4 deg. in bresilth, and
from 30 deg. t 0,40 deg. long.. Theft edges
were pretty well r ilefined and tolerably bright;
their mldnle'emitted but a feeble light; and
the intervening spaces were as • dark:. as the I
rest of the ,firmarpent. The tails. 01 corn
ets, as already, noticed, sometimes cover, an
immense space in the heavees. The coniet
of 1680 bad tail which extended to 68 deg.,
that of 1811 to 22 deg., and that of 1769 to
97 deg. in leogtlo so that! some of these
tails must have reached ' froth the zepith to
the horiiOn. • ; The leagth of the raikot the
