BERKS LS 1771
Edward Shippeu, Esq., of Philadelphia,
formerly of Puitsvilie, communicates to the
/nyurrer, the following original document;
which he - found in examioing a lot of old
family papers. and believes has never before
appeared in print. -h is a 'little curious
note the effort of" the men of Berks" to re-.
concile the sentiineus of lOyality which they
still believed to be due the King of England,
withb , .the spirit , of liberty which' still held
strong possession of their hearts., They were
keenly, sensthle of the wrung and oppression
labeled upon the Colonies by the Mother
Country, aed bold enough to proiest, against
them in uneqUisocal • terms ; bur not yet
prepared fur .the act of open " rebellipia "
which fouud espression, just Itio years sub-,

sequeotly, in the memorable Declaration of
Independence. This doeuaoeut will prove
the more . interesting to Schuylkill County
readers; as representiog the voice of our
Mother County—Schuylkill having -formed
part of Berks up `to 1811: . _
" At a meeting of 'a very respectable body
of the Freeholders, and other inhabitants of
the County of Bergs, at Reading, the 2d of
July, 1774, Edward Biddle, Esq., i n The
Chair.
" This Assembly, taking into their very
Serious Consideration the present critical
Situation Of American Affairs,. do unani

" 1. That the iuhabitarits of, this County
do owe and will pay dde allegiance to our
rightful Sovereign. King, George the Third.
" 21' That the• Powers clamed, and now
attempting to be put in execution by the
British Parlianaent,are fundamentally wrong
and cannot be admitted without the utter de
struction of the liberties of America.
3. That the Boston Port Bill is unjust
and tyrannical. in the extreme—and that the
measures pursued against Boston are iuten•
ded to operate equally against the Rights and
Liberties of the other ColotaieS:
"4. That this Assembly' dis concur in
opinion with their respectable, brethren of
Philadelphia, that there is au absolute neces

between the Mother Country and the Colo;

Rights Of America.
" G. That, as, the People of Boston are now
Suffering in the grand and Common Cause
of American Liberty, Resolved, that it is the
Duty of all the Inhabitants to contribute to
the Support of said Sufferers, and that the

appointed a Committee to meet and cor

A CHINESE DINNER PARTY;
When a Chinese invites to a ceremonious
dinner, a large red paper.iS sent several days
before :he time. On this is written the in
vitation, in the politeAt terms of the lan
guage. On the day before the feast another
is sent to the guests, dit rose-colored paper,
to remind them of itl , and :to, ascertain
whetiler they are coming. Again on the
next day, a short time; before the' hour ap
pointed, the invitation isirepeated,. to inform
them that the ,feast is prepared and await 4
them. When Ithe guests are assembled, the
first thing presented is warm almond milk,
io large cups. Every . table is served
,with
exactly the same food and the same number
of dishes at one and the Same moment. Only
four or five perscins sit at each table;. in; very
fashionable houseS nod more than two or
three. The tables are mostly made of pol
ished ebony; or Surat black wood) and!dou
ble ; for as they use notable cloth's, the up
per table is - removed, with all that is on. it,
at the end of the first coarse, to give place to
the second. For the edd of the first course,
the tables are laid out with chup•sticks, Wine
cups, Gina ware, or enamelled spoons and
two little plates, with fruit, nuts, &c. ISev
eral 'Mall cold dishes, such as dry salted; fish,
shred fine and made. into salad, With mush
rooms, &c., are spread over ;the board, only
leaving room in the centre for a cup, about
the size of a breakfast cup. The dinner now
commences, andallihe wine cups are filled
with seiv hengstcra•—a i *eak, acidulated
roof, distilled. from millet Seed, and is al
ways drank hot—and the master of the, feast
rises, as well as the !guests ; he holds the
wine cup in both hands; saluting theirdwith
it, after they all drink together, and sit down
again. A cup with hot food is now seed in
the centre of every table. -
Alter the first course has been finished,
the upper table is removed, and the table re
mauling is spread with spoons, wine cups,
chopsticks, vinegar, soy, and sweet sauce,
with some plates of 'sliced radishes, pears,
oranges, and' various :other !ruin and vege-•
tables placed before each person : and all the .
large fruits are sliced, as well as the vegeta
' bles. While the second course Is pi ePariog
those who are tired of sitting rise and walk,
about the room.
The second table being prepared, t he guests '
are all seated again, when birds' nest soup--=
thetnost expensive and the greatest delicacy
a Chinese can offer—is served up, with pi
geon's or plover's eggs floating upon it, to
each penon. When entertaining' atm of the
high constituted authorities, the mister'seeves
the first dish of Atte entertainment. On the
day succeeding the li!ast, the host geniis a

368,764, being 23i per cent above the aver

regard the declease in the emigratiOn as
proof that the laboring classes of the United

state of upi.sual comfort and prosperity. It
would Vbeyotait their province to speculate .
