ANSWERING SIMPLE QUESTIONS.
Why is rain water soft?—Because it is not
impregnated with earth and minerals.
Why is it more easy to wash with soft wa
ter than with hard ?—Because soft water
unites freely with soap, and dissolves it, in
stead of decomposing it, as hard water does.
Why do wood ashes make hard water
soft?-Ist, Because the carbonic acid of wood
ashes combines with the sulphate of lime in
the hard water, and converts it into chalk ;
and 2ndly, Wood ashes convert some of the
soluble salts of water into inSoluble, and
throw them down as a sediment; by which
the water remains more pure.
Why has rain water such au unpleasant
smell, when it is collected in a rain-water
tub or tank?—Because it is impregnated
with decomposed organic matter, washed
from roofs, trees, or the casks in whichi it is
collected.
Why does water melt salt ?—Because very
minute articles of water insinuate therMelves
into the pores of the salt by capillary attrac-,

FLAT ROOFS
All the new houses, seys the Scientific
American, which have been built in New
York, have what are termed flat roofs ; that
is, the roof is nearly level and, slants but
slightly from one side to the other. The old
huge peak roofs are last disappearing, we
wader how they ever came into use. The
inventor of them must have been a man full
of conical ideas. The flat roofs are covered
with tin and well painted. If a fire takes
place in a building, it is easy to walk and
work on the flat roof, so as to command the
lire, if it .be in the adjacent building, this
cannot be done on peaked roofs. Flat roots
are 'cheaper and more convenient in every. re-
specs. We advise all those who intend to
build new houses to have flat roofs on them.
It is far better to have a flush' stori at the
top of a building, than a peaked cramped up
garret, wlttch is only comfortable for - travel.

The following mode of obtaining a helps
mate, appears to us wonderfully convenient
and satisfactory. All the unnecessary delati
which precede, and, alas ! follow matrimont
amongst us, are wisely avoided by this stns•
