TRE ARCTIC DISCOVER' ES
It appears that recent discoveries in Arctic
regions. which are claimed by • British navi
gator's and to which British names are given,
have been first made by citizens of the Uni
ted States, and that the honor of these dis
coveries truly and properly oelongs to our own
countrymen. The matter is thus set forth
in the 'New York Journal of Commerce :
The arctic discoveries made through the
enterprise of the British nation, have exten
ded the bounds of science. added to the sum
of human knowledge, and conferred honor on
the British name. Northern, geography re
ceives an annual contribution from the aident
and noble men who,are sent on expeditions
to the Polar seas, and the British Navy is
strengthened by thi discipline, and elevated.
by the studies and acquirements which ap
pertain to that navigation. The late expe
di tion, sent from England under the command
of Capt. Penny, proceeded in a northerly di
rection from Barrow's Strait, beyond the lim
its reached, by any other British navigator,
ai.d although Capt. Penny's return to Eng
land was as late as September of this year,
the maps showing the extent of their sup
posed discoveries have already been given•to
the, public. Those maps embrace extensive
regions, and names have been appropriated
to capes, islands, hays and inlets embraced in
the discovery. With the nobleness which
ever marks these who engage in such enter
prises. they have sprinkled over the new
ground the names of those who lately returned
in our own expedition. Penny and Austin
undoubtedly supposed that they were the first
discoverers of the lands and waters to which
they gave a name and a location on British
maps. The. Grinnell expedition preceded
them, however, one season in these discove
ries and to America is due the honor which
Great Britain Chas attempted so gracefully to
wear. On the return of the Advance to this
port, tidings were for the, first time had of the
results of Penny's voyage ; but before the
Advance had reached, her berth, and before
thos'e tidings were received, the maps show
ing the discoveries made by the American
vessels beyond Wellington Channel had been
exhibited to the originator of-the enterprise.
We did not speak of the discoveries, because
they had not then been reported to the head
of the Department at Washington, in pursu
ance of the practice prevailing among Navy
officers, and they had been communicated in
that confidence. The Brrtish Government
need only to know these facts in order to in
duce them to erase from their maps the names
which they have so applied to these frozen ;
regions, and substitute theme given by the
the American Navigators. The British name•
given to an extensive range of land lying to
the north of Wellington Channel is the "Al
bert Land." in honor of Prince Albert. The
name given by theAtrierican discoverers to the
same range was iu honor of Henry Grinnell,
the author of the American expedition. The
honors and the national rights that flow from
a discovery of new regions of country are
such that nations never part from, except on
the, most incontestible proof of the authenti
city of a precedent claim'. The Grinnell ex
pedition will - have no_difficulty in showing
the extent and the time of their discoveries,
and their precedence over those of Great
Britian, and will thus be able to settle the
question fully. They have won those honors
for their country.
A CRISIS IN FRANCE.
Mr. -Walsh, being a resident of Paiis,.in a
letter under' date of Sept. 16th, says :
" That great events are just before us is
certain. That crisis of which I have often
spoken to you is drawing very near. Between
the 16th day of Septerliber rind the middle or
end of next May thpiestinies of Europe for
probably half a century—which in these days
is a very long be decided.: A
fierce straggle—it may bia most desperate
and bloody struggle—between liberty, civil
and religious, on the one hand, and - homy
despotism in politics and religion On the
other. What will be the issue, God alone
knows !
" find that there is a wonderful activity
here in the political world. The foreign am
bassadors. especially, .those of Austria, Prus
sia. and Russia, have frequent conferences,
and are constantly sending and receiving des
patches. Nor ate the Ministers resident - of
the smaller Powers, such as Sardinia, Naples,
Spain, the States of the Church, Belgium
and 'Holland, idle. Those of England and
the United Stites are wide awake, and the
former has not a little to do to look after these
Continental States, and the movements of
their rulers." •
CC7' Tits Executive Committee of the .
New York Temperance Alliance, has issued
an address to all Temperance Societies there.
recoil:unending them to form alliances in
their respective Wards, for the purpose of
enforcing the - laws against the sale of liquor
on the Sabbath; the removal of polls and
political meetings from placetwhere intoxi
cating drinks are sold; the suppression of all
illegal money contributed by candidates for
office to promote their election ; the eoset
meat of prohibitory laws against the sale of
intoxicating liquor as a beverage; and the
election to office of such men as'shall be
known to be in ferqr of the seecenplishutent

PEANcti:J.,ORT:ND', ts 4., the "Observer"
of the Philadelphia Ledgcr, lately on a visit
to this CO:unly,\writes thus of Pottsville and
the Region, is Wednesday's paper :
If you would farm an idea of the wealth
and power of Tennsylvania, you must come
to this borough, thel capital of the eastern
mining district of thiState,, and the centre
of its mineral: industry. "The borough itself
has but 8001 , ,iiihabitants;Atm the stir and
bustle—the animation of the idace would lead
you to infer that you are in ;fie midst of a
great commercial city,' It bears, no resem
blance tog manufacturing town, for s the stout
arms aniLattiletic figures you meet; bear no
resemblance to the pale and emaciated.coun
tenances. yoti, meet with in Manchester or I
Spitalfields.. Mining is a healthy exercise;de
veloping: the human frame and nerving it
against- the vicissitudes of climate. There
seems to : be a vast deal of ease and comfort
here among the inhabitants, who are a live
ly, healthy, athletic set of men : only a little
more excitable, than: some of their neighbors
in other 'paha of Pennsylvania.
It is in Pottsville and Reading that you can
form an= adequate idea of the vast impor
tance or thr Reading Railroad, its, a means
of developing the wealth of the mineral re
gion, by': furnishing-quick, regular and cheap
means of transportation to Philadelphia and
other Atlantic markets.--Without the Read
ing Railroad, the supply of coal would be
limited,: subject to interruption by freshets,
and otherwise rendered uncertain, in conse
quence of which great fluctuation in prices
would necessarily be experienced by the pub
lic., New York;Boston and Philadelphia are
now chiefly:depending on the Reading Riail
mad for their regular supply ofcoal.
The annual amount of coal brought to mar
ket from the ruining region of Pennsylvania
has been averaged at 3,400,000 tons ; but it
will probably exceed 4,000,000 thisyear, and
continue toincrease for hundreds of years to
come. *ith the increase of population, and
the' application of steam to all industrial pur
suits. There is no doubt, therefore, that all
the means of transportation now in use, and
hereafter t Obe established, whether railroads
or canals, wilt find ample emplovineni with
the developement 'of the inexfiaustible re
sources of the State, and that it. will depend
chiefly On their own management whether they
shall be employed at remunerating prices or
not.
After s*kiag of the business facilities &c.
of the Railroad and Canal, he concludes by
• •
saying;-"yhr, truth is, both the Railroad and
the Naiigaiioit pOmpany are important and
indispensable to the accommodation' of the
publie, both ranking among the most valuable
improverrients„not only if the State, but the
wholecotintiv."

SinCe we must make an excursion, friends,
let us'make the best of it. We suggest, as
a solace, the following extract from the lines
written,. liy Col. S. D. Patterson, for our
political neighbors, on a similar occasion—
'they will he found to cheer the spirits ama
zinglyi •
Embarked'On our voyage, our course we'll pursue,
Observing each object that rises to .view,
Enjoying the prospect—but nothing with care
Wherever a rapid or mei: may appear.
And a look-out we'll keep lest the lubber% above,
Ia the , heat of their ardor, the zeal or their lova
For the plunder and spoils, on our bows should be
thrown,
And utts themselves vp;in their haste to come dorm.
Away-to the head of Salt river we go,
Each heart bounding high with a patriot's glow.
We're beaten—what of it ? A good cause wit ne'er
Let its advocates sink into gloomy despair :
Clouds break into sunshine—the darkness 'of night
Is the- p relude which tethers the dawning of light ;
And the spirit that quails not when adverse fate
lowers,
Enhaires:its virtue, ineivascs its powers
Then'Onveard, on this the great endse of our, lives,
And whenever we drink to our "s . weethetits and
Wives,"
Let as offer a prayer that the Power above
Will eareiblly guard the dear land of our love ;
That-no spirit oftiiseoid may hever the chain,'
'J3ot the bond of our Union; unbroken remain ;
And . lhe banner of freedom . be evertmfurted,
The tight of all nAtions, the hope of the world.

quite a sensation in England, by offering
$lO,OOO for :he use of the Crystal Palace one
day and night after the close of the Exhibi

The Atlantic, which arrived at New York
on Wednesday, brings-the following account
of the sailing of Kossuth and his compatriots:.
The Mississippi, with fifik-five exiles on
board, touched at Smyrna, and on the 16th
at Sy ra, one of the Ciclades. On the arrival
of Kossuth in the Dardanelles, the captain
of the Mississippi went on board the Turkish
vessel, and placed his ship at the disposal of
the exiles, at the same time presenting $l5,
060 to their leader in the name of the Amer•
icon government. ' -
After having solemnly promised the Turk
ish commissaries to go direct to America;
Kossuth wanted' to take a Hungarian flap;
with him into:the American vessel. but this
was objected to by the Turks. When all
the refugees were safely on board. Kossuth
made a speech, in which Lord Palmerston
I and the Americans were not forgotten, and
soon after the Mississippi started on her
voyage.
The Opinion. publishes the following let
ter from Spezzia, dated Sept. 22d :
The moment it became known that Kos

sippi, the town was illuminated, guns and
rockets were ,tired, and a number of boats
decorated wile flag, 'surrounded the Ameri
can ship, which they saluted with vitas.—
The hand of the garrison accompanied them.
The American Commodore, who was atlhe
baths of Lucca, hastened to Spczzia to con
gratulate the illustrious guest, whom We
probably shall not be permitted to feast here,
as the ship is to weigh anchor hetore the ex

The 'Mississippi arrived at Marseilles on
the 2elth instant, having M. Kossuth and 417
Hungarian refugees on board. She sailed
again immediately, having procured a supply
of coal and provisions. None of the intssen
gers landed.

AN INCIDENT.
The Boston Courier says that on Saturday
morning. the widow of a worthy mechanic . ,
recently deceased, caned at an office in State
street, for the payment Of a small brn, which
was due Tor the services of her late husband.
Her pale and sunken cheellitold the sad story
of bereavement.affliction,and over-watching.
After her departure, a number of gentlemen,
who happened to be at the office upon busi
ness, made some inquiries respecting her
condition, and upon being informed that she
had been left with four small children, and
in almost destitute circumstances, home&
ately opened a subscription list, each one
putting down five dollars. Others, who
came in afterwards, in the regular course ut
the morning exchanges, followed snit, and
beffire "board time" a very respectable sum
was raised for the relief of the deeply afflicted
and almost heart-hroken widow: "Whoso
given' to the poor leadeth to the Lord."—
"Go thou and do likewise."
A TRUE LADY
The Louisville Courier of the Bth instant
says :—The papers through the country are
noticing with favor the verdict of ten thou.
sand dollars lately recovered in Henry county,
in this State, in favor of a young lady, in an
action of slander, as a strong Indication of
the high moral tone of the community
where the case was tried. It may be proper
to add that, so soon as the verdict was ren
dered, the fair Kentucky plaintiff, scorning to
receive the money of the defendanther only
object being the vindication of her name
from the the calumnious aspersions of the
defendant—directed her counsel io enter a
remiuer for the amount of the verdict, save
enough to compensate them for theirseritces.
Upon consultation they agreed to be satisfied
with•five hundred dollars. and, in accordance
with the instructions of their client, : released
the defendant from the payment of the nine
thousand five hundred 'dollars.

FROM MEXICO.
The latei - 4 news from Mexico.confirms the
previously reported insurrection in the North -.
ern States. The reasons assigned for the "te•
volt are the alleged failure of the Govern- -
ment to protect the citizens against the dep. redations of the Indians—an unjust system
of levying duties, which operates most dia.'
astiowly upon the interests of the people'oa
the frontier, and 'thirdly. theClespotic pottier
exercised 14 , the Government Over the people.
Several fawns, besides Catnargo, are reported
to he in the 'hands of the insurgents.
OHIO ELECTION
The returns from Ohio, as tar as received:
favor the election of Wood, the Democratic
eaudida Le thr Governor. Weicannot, as yet.,
say of what political complexion the Legis
lature will be. There have been somesirange
combinations under the wire-pulling man
agement of Chase and Giddings . . The
Fine-Soilers mostly coalesced with the Lo
cos, though in one County, we observe, the
Whigs and Loeos united against the Free.
