The latest reports state that Lopez had
been captured and his troops routed, not
withstanding the previous impression that
he and his Tarty were gaining ground.—
Much allowauct• must be made however tor
accidental or, intentional exaggeration in ma
ny of these reports, and the actual late of
Lopez and kiq party cahoot be fully relied
upon until alter another!arrival.
There is no doubt now, but that an actual
revolution of a serious character has begun
on the Island, such, as we anticipate, no
Government powyr will be able to suppress.
Cuba is destined to tree herself from Spanish
dominion, but, it Is to he hoped, the wartn
sympathies oaf the people ot the U. States
fur the- sufferings of other nations will nut
blind them to asense of duty and obedience to
the authority of our own. A Champion of

institutions. Whatever in 'him offends her
authority or encourages a disregard toward
her laws, detracts by so much from his as
sumed character. and greatly depreciates thr
virtue of his efforts in so noble a cause.

GREEN HAY, AUGUST 14th, 1851.
. B. HANNAN -Mt/ Dear Sir : —After bidding
adieu to old friends and associations in Potts
ville, I proceeded to Philadelphia, where I
rejoined nip-family, who had preceeded me
there and were sojourning with kind friends,
awaiting my arrival. Saturday, July 26th,
we took seats in the cars of the Camden &
Amboy Railroad Company and bid farewell
to good 91d Pennsylvania for our new horde
in the West. A pleasant ride through New
Jersey brought us to the city of New YOrk,
that emporium of " noise and confusion "
where sinners do not " cease to sin." We
immediately took passage on board t:ie splen
did steamer Hendrick Hudson for Albany.--
Several of our friends visited us on board,
to give us a parting adieu. At GA o'clock
we were on the broad and beautiful Hudson,
running with almost Railroad velocity, , and
passing on either side beautiful and pictur
esque scenery. The towns and villages along
the river presented the appearance of a beau
tiful panorama, diversified with groves 'lnd
ornamentallnge, and well cultivated farms.
The mantle of night closed in upon us much
to our regret, and deprived us of the pleasure
of viewing'the wild, rugged, and mountain
rent Highlands. At 10 o,clock we retired to
our state-rooms and awoke at 5 o'clock on
Sunday morning along side of the wharf at
Albany. After our ablut*as and toile/ du
ties, we proceeded to a Hotel, registered our
names, ordered breakfast and seat our -cards
to your old acquaintances, Mr. and Mrs. S—
and their interesting daughters. They re
ceived us with their accustomed kindness
find hospitality, and we enjoyed, in their so
ciety, the Sabbath day in rational and pleas
ing conversation. Albany is an old and Well
'located city, but appears wanting in many of
the requisites necessary to ensure its rapid
improvement. I must confess, however; I
was agreeably surprised and pleased to notice
the change that has taken place within 10 or
15 years. The Albanians in many things
are behind the age .in enterprise and .go-n
head-a-tiveness, and if they do not keep their
pes skinned," will in time be far outstrip
by their enterprising neighbors, the "Tro
jans." Monday, July 28th, after, bidding
adieu to our kind Meads in Albany and leav
ing a dear traveling companion there; we
took tle ears for Buffalo, a distance of 327
mtles,'and arrived there about 7 o'clock same
evening.. The Railroad way is in fine order
and the cars good and comfortable, with po
lite and careful conductors. We generally li
attained the apace of 30 or 40 miles per hour.
Tile Mohawk valley is beautiful and appeared
to be in a high state of cultivation, and the I
towns and villages were all in a thriving
condition. The Erie canal was filled with
boats laden with all kinds of produce for the
New York market, pouring into her lap the
rich bounties of the West and North-west.—
It is mortifying to see Philadelphia looking
on so calmly and supinely, while New York
is eating out her very vitals. Will Pennsyl
vrnia never see the importance of omiering
her Northern counties to herself? or is ehe
willing they . should still continue, (as in a
business poinrof view they in reality are)
part of the Empire State? It vtas humilia
ung to me to hear'New Yorkers talk about
" their trade of the Stuqueltanna country."—
I hope a more enlightened and energeuc poi-
icy will before long be adopted in Pennsylva-
.If she does not, the trade of Northern
Pennsylvania will be irretrievably lost,to the
State. Let the people of Philadelphia awake
from their Rip Van Winkle sleep, or she lo
ses the trade of her own State as well.as the
West. I have digressed. We passed through
Schenectady, Utica, Syracuse, Rochester,
and many other towns of lesser importance,i
but destitted at some future time perhaps, to
l
rival their more populous sisters. Buffalo is
truly a business city, and must, from its geo
graphical position, in the course of time, be
a very large city. The streets are wide and
regularly laid out with blocks of high and
substantial brick buildings. Outside p 1 the
[ business part of the city, I noticed , maay
' splendid private residences, constricted with
much taste, and gardens around them filled
with shrubbery and Rowers. I was at a loss
to understand why their chunneys were gen
erally.supported by braces of tron,,bOt was
informed that it was a precaution against the
gales which sweep down the lake, frequent
fy blowing them over.
Tuesday afternoon we took the cars for
Niagara Falls, a distance of 22 milet. We
arn ved' by Railroad after a pleasant ride along
the Niagam'river and 'reached the scene of
our desires. Objects ofsublintityAr surpass
ing any description :I had read or imagined,
met my view. People who have never seen
them, suppose probably'that they have only
to go to the brink and see the water thuader
ing into the abyss below, but most:; people
will, in that case be mistaken. To view
the Falls it requires several miles traveling.
I will endeavor in my next to say something
about them. Remember me kindly; to all
friends, . Yours Truly,

MR. EDITOR : roU will perhaps . recollect
that in attempting to rally the dispirited and

It is not my intention to find fault with Mr.
Hughes for tilts apparent miss-use of the
preposition at. But, judging from the nature
of Col. Bigler's wonderful speech, and from
my own observations on the effects so mani
festly produced by it, I was led to the con
clusion that Mr. Hughes and his political
friends were not only I nstructed' AT it, but
that lie might hare adoed with much pro

nevertheless, greatly disappointed in it: total

terribly discomfited through it : generously
troubled about it : strongly inclined to mur

utter defeat will speedily follow after it ;,that
whenever the attention of the people is di

of their own destruction are lbund tothin it,
they are now heartily sorry they did not
