THE vans TICKET SWIEDI.E.
We recently alluded to the manner in
which 'the Locofoco C anal Commissioners .
sivitadled the Slate Treasury, by passing tbeit
delegates to the Harrisburg Convention over
the public works, free of charge. Since that
several developments have been made which
exhibit a system of corruption in the man
agemeot of our public works. which de
mands the attention of the tax-payers of the
State.,
The We;trnoteland Inielbgrncer says
~‘ We have only' to say, that ire believelt. l
to be true and that we beard a prominent
Democrat of this &limy: say the other day,
that he, knew if to he trite, sad that he had
seen - a ticket, which had been -offered a dere- !
gale from a ueighboring.County, but was re
fused, -on the ground that he had not the .
vote to give to the individual, which those
tickets were designed to Mirchase.
Another promineut• man itt the Democra
tic party; said the other day in our hearing,
that he believed that there. had been as much
money iiidireelly stolen on our public works,
as would have paid our
_state debt. Such
frankness and bonestylire admire. It ghes
to prove, too, that evert iu Westmoreland,
• where the dds are,
_generally, .fearfully
againsi.us, there are-men in the Democratic
putt', who cannot countenance, and we hope,
will not support such a system of wholeshle
pluhder upon the State Treasury."

Painter, who would pledge himself to vote
for Canal Commissioner. Every delegate from
this county accepted of the "free , ticket" ex
cepting Chariest Kent, who scurried the con
ditions."
In the Pittsburg Gazfue we find a-commu
nication from T. J. LI igham, a mutiber of the
last Legislathre in which he sass :
After the adjournment and before leaving
Ilarrisburg..a friend procured from one of the
members of the Canal BOard, and handed
me, a ticket, such he assured me had : been
furnished to the members generally. As
near as I-can recollect the substance of it
was— •
"Pass Mr. Bigharu over the Statelmprove4
meats to Pittsburg free Of toll."
By virtue of this ticket I paid ,00thingon
the Portage RailrOad, and no canal tolls on
the boat-from Jolmtown. Oo my way home
ward, in the cars, these tickets became the
subject of conversation, when tomem:rur
prise, all, I believe, of the DemocratiC'ffern
bets then present, and at least one gentle
man, not a member of , the Legislature, ex
hibited tickets, not similar to mine, hot in
substance as follows:
- Pass - over the State Improve
ments during the year 1851 "free of toll."
The gentleman not a member of the Le
gislature, and at least one Democratic mem
ber spoke of hrtrinz free ticket, for 185:1 as
well as 1851. These, however, were not er•
hibited. Some of the members, and I think•
'this same g,eutletnau, not a member, exhibit
ed more than one ticket or pass signed by
different members of the Canal Board and I
believe at least one gentleman spoke of ha
ving a pass Iron') each of the three Canal
commissioners.
Mr. Bighatn, a Whig member of th'e Le-
gislature, it will be observed, received a free
pass fur one trip only, from Harrisburg to
Pittsburg (which, by way, he aught not i
to have accepted,) white 'rhe etirofoco Intn
tiers are tendered free tickets fur the whole'
year and some of them fur next year beside.'

These puhlie . improvement , were niait.• fur

in abundance (its will hereafter he shown)
in the estate of the Dauphin and Susquehan

The Company's line of rail-road will con

of Schuylkill Co. The trausportatiatuf agri

'revenue to the Company ; and its consump

new mines are opened—new towns built,
and new manufacturers spring, up. Thin

`A majority of the Company's lands which
embrace an area of upwards of 40.000 acres.
are ivell timbered with valuable timber of
various kinds, and the property has an abun

colliery purPoses, is growing within the coal
valley, ,bet between the South and North moun
tains
We confess thlit \ we visited the Company's.
estate. with many pr s epecst.ssiun's against ifs
value. We had hear it spoken of as a nar
row and shallow basin, with Woken and ‘
dis

tain, for, twenty tulles in leugib, and for at
least fifteen miles havin! , the full \ depth and
containing all the coal veins an v where found
iu any part of the southern coal field,.
The gaps, as before stated. are in the
range of South motintain, and are locally
koown by the following names, commenc
ing at the gap nearest to the eastern line 'tit'
the Dauphin estate, and continuing thenet ,
westward, as they collie in order, through
the property :
Ist gap called Blk Spring." or "Mt. Fagle."
2d do. "Gold Mute."

4th do. "Yellow Spring."
rith do. "Rattling Run."
The above named (live in number) consti
tute all ilie'•gaps em through the sharp or
South mountain into the coal ?rifrin, from the
effects of which the coal veins are by nature
drained 40 that extent, to give workable
breasts above water level: In—some of the
veins, several !Hindi - ill feet of working breast
is gained in free drainage in astir range in
the mountain--•the south boundary of' the
basin. The gaps are at such distances apart
from each other as to give ample run upon
the veins of coal, 'in an•east and west direc
tion from each gap. •
Nature. has given' the Dauphin estate very
great advantages. In the Nt - irth 'mountain,
the coal 'strata are regular and uniform, for
a distance of twenty miles apd upwards.--
The South moutitaio is cut through in deep
notches to the coal valley, at proper uicances
apart, for the erection of collieries and lot
draining the whole. The coal is of a varied
description, adapted to all uses. There is
A nth racite,Transition, Semi-Bituminous and
Bituminous : each gap having coal of a
somewhat different character from its ad
joining gap, and, each gap t obtaining several
veins of' coal of different qualities, suited to
different purposes. The 'outlet to market for
the productions of tht , estate is .. . unriyalleii
there beibg a level or descending grade in the
direction of the trade, both' east and west,
when the rail-road to the east is completed.
AVe, who have
,carefully examined it, can
appreciate its value. `We know it to he an
exceedingly valuable coal properly, the-worst
features or which are known, and exposed
the best parts are undeveloped and' almost

as in the Gaps ofSouth mountain, the coal

Coal Company's estate, and the large amount
and variety of coal that it contains. It is at
least 20 miles in length, and, for 15 miles of
this distance, is nearly one mile in width,
containing coal measures nearly 2.000 feet
thick, *tutting, the same number of veins
of coal that exist - ,.in the eastern part of .the
basin. upon the S'watara and the Schuylkill.
It has a valuable •tnineral estate, the future
value of which can scarcely be estimated.—
It has great advantages in location, nut only
for the supply of the interior and southern
norrkes, but also the eastern. It is the near
est to the capitol of the .state, and m the
dense and increasing population alOng the
lower Susquehanna, and in the great Cunt
berland Valley. The supply for - the city of
Baltimore, and other cities on the Chesapeake
Bay, ran be more quickly and eheaply-eb

the distance is less, and the avenue to mar
ket, by both canal and rail -road, are must
ample.
