PATRIOTIS3I.-A Yankee gentleman con

different objects of attraction in the vicinity
of Boston brought hint u Bunker Ilill.—
They stood looking atthe, splendid shaft,
when the Yankee said " This is the place
where Warren fell." Ah !" replied the
Englishinan, evidently not ,posted up in
cal historical matters ; " Did it hurt him
much?" The native looked at him,•4 with
the .expression of fourteen Fourths of Julvs
in his countenance, " Hurt him !" said he
he was killed, sir." "Ab ! he was eh ?"
said the stranger, still eyeing the monument
and computing its height, in his own Mind,
layer by,layer ; " well I :should think he
would have been, to fall so'far." The native
tore his hair, L bw it gave him a good oppor

connected with the hill, and the benefits
therefrom, flowing for our !somewhat exten

:Creation's Lord! we pi:use our trust_
In Springtime in in thy holy word,
Vbieb saith, "Who scatters in the dust
The seed, shall be in season heard ; -
Shall see the genii/ through the mould,
The youngling coin takekbeany
The yellow harvest field behold,
The orchard bend with mellow fivit.
We trust thee, Father ! On its bed
We cast our seed with faith like rock
give our plough lands ample spread,
And fence our fields from herd and Hock,
We cull our vines of thriftless shoot,
Our orchards prune to suit the soh_
Whilst toil our loved ones, veiled and mute.
Their gentle hearts with flowers to wrap..-,
And wilt Thou bid our rains and dews
Refreihilte soil when sunbelt= parch ;
Aud dress our mends in the soft hues
Which Spring woos from the rainbow arch;
And Whilst Thou guard's: our fields from trail.
And fencest naturies perils out,
Keep from our household grief and wall; -
Arid make our limbs and courage stout.

FARM MANURES ANDIIIANAGENENT
We copy the following chapter on " man
ures from domestic' animals, and their pre
servation,". from the recent work of Prof.-
Norton, entitled " Elements of Stir/210'c
Agriculture:"
• " The manure of various domestic
_ani
mals is in this country, most commonly em
ployed as a fertilizer, all other.manures be
itig, used in comparatively small quantitiet:'
and yet even these are seldom preserved and
applied so carefully as they might of ought
to be. •
The principal varieties are those - of the
ox, the cow, and the sheep. Of these, that
of the horse is most valuable in its fresh'
state ; it contains much nitrogen, but is very
liable to lose by fermentation. That of the'
hog next. That of the cow is placed at the
bottom of the list. This is because the en
riching substances of her.lbod go principally•
to the formation of milk, the manure being
thereby rendered poor.
The manure of all these animals is far
richer than the food given.them. because 'it
contains much more nitrogen. This is for
the reason that a large part of the . carbon
and oxygenof the food are consumed - in the
lungs and blood generally, for the purpose of
keeping up the heat of the - body. They are
given off from the lungs, and also by per
spiration and evaporation through,the pores
of the skin, in the form of carbon and water.
From animals fed upon rich food, the.nia
mire is much more powerful than syhen - it is
poor. In England. for instance, where they
fatten cattle largely on oil-cake, it is calcula
ted that the increased value of the manure
repays all of the outlay. This is the reason
why hUman odure it better than' manure
from any of the animals - mentioned above,
the food of man being rich and various.
All these kinds of manures should be care
fully collected and preserved, both as to their
liquid and solid parts. The liquid part, or
tirinet•is.particularly rich in the phosphates
and in nitrogen. This part is, by very many
farmers, permitted, in a great degree, to run
away, or evaporate. Some farm-yards are
contrived.to throw the water of entirely ;
others convex/ it through a ditch upon the
nearest field. The liquid manure which
might have fertilized several acres in the
course of the season, is thus concentrated
upon one small spot, and the consequence is
a vegetation so rank as to be of very little
use. Spots of this kind maybe seen in the
neighborhood of many farrn-yards, where
the grass grows up so heavy that it falls
down and rots at the bottom, and has to be
cut some weeks before haying time, produc
t ing strong, coarse hay that eat le will scarce
, Iv touch.
The farmers of ibis country need awaken
, ing up on the subject of carefully preserving
their manure. In Flanders, - everything• of
the kind is saved with -the greatest care:
thfs liquid manure of a single cow for a year,
is valued at ten dollars here it is often ai
-1 lowed to escape entirely.
VERI ZI G THE SOIL.
It is believed, and, indeed, the fact has al
ready been abundantly demonstrated, that
the finer the soil is, 4,lie more fertile it will
he. Tull supposed that 'minute disintegra
tion or combination was all that was essen
tially necessary to render any land; produc
tive and fruitful, and that no ntatter ! whit
might be its original character, the plow,
freely used, would render the application of
stimulating manures, or pabulum of any kind
unnecessary. This, however, even his own
experiments, instituted fur the express pur
pose of establishing the verity of his idolized
! theory, prove nature untrue. Still, in all
cases, minute pulverization is a vfist benefit.
to any coil, and the more perfect this corn
,
minution or division of the constituent par-
I ticles is, the more confidently can wb rely
iupon the success of the future crop, what
! ever it may he. By frequent plowings, even
the most tenacious and adhesive lands will
be ameliorated ; they will he exposed more
thoroughly-and effectually'to the- fertilizing
effect's of dews, rains, atmospheric influ
ences and the enriching action of stile'. heat.
The roots of plants find also soils thus pre
pared, a much more favorable medium :
they are not= arrested in their progress, ex
pand freely in quest
,of food, and are not
contorted and thrown aside by opposing ob•
stacles which are in superable to theieslen
der form. Manure also acts muctrmore en
ergetically on fine soil, than on that which
is coarse, and in compact masses:: does not
so soon yield its humidity in season of drouit,
and is far more absorbent in time of rain.
DIATERI4ILLS FOR EIANURR.
There are so many sources froth which
the materials to make manure , may be de
rived, that the wonder is, how any farmer
should neglect to' improve his opportunities
for making his farm as rich as a garden spot.
There are shores of creeks and rivers lined
with mud—woods abounding with itidnld
and leaies ; mould from head-lasand fence
sides and corders=mud and vegetable rait
ter from the_ marshes, and the scrapings
ditches and roads, in each and all of which
are comprised the woe elements of manure,
requiring nothing but a little labor, and cow
poiing, to make them-all as good as • horse
dung—a cart load of stable or iosizgaid
manure, mixed with three loads - s• bf thelthb
stances enumerated, will make thewlitdirssi
good as' itself-20 bushels of ashes -mot2ld
do the same thing, while a dead horse; or t
dead cow, cut up and composted with twenty
loads, would mdlfe the whole as rich as Go-I
shen Cheese.—Amerion Fanner.
