saved in this way worth as much as a•ton of

corn-sheller and give the Cobs to my cattle,
sheep and colts. I , do not, think that from
twelve hundred bushels of ears of corti; there
will be twenty-five bushels of cobs lefi, not
eaten by the stock.
CLOVER OR •TIAIOtIiV SRAM
Mr. 8: M. Ellis, of „IIlupe!, Pa.. furnishes
the 'following as his mode of preparing end;
souring these seeds, which he has found to
be the bi:st he has ever tried:
'Take one bushel of clover-seed, put it in
a pile on vour'harn floor.- ,Make three gal
lons of pickle, not quite strotig enough to
to bear an egg,, put it on the seed, mix it
thoroughly in the evening with a 'paddle or
shovel, and then spread it on the floor, 'four
inches thick. The next morning,:: wet it
again as above; then mix about one peck of
plaster, by sprinkling two quarts upon it at
a titue, well stirred; spread out your heaps
again, and so on, till you have it so well'
dried with plaster• that the seed will not stick
together. Sow while the seed is damp. Oue
bushel thus prepared will makeover one •nd
a half bushels. -
The advantage of sowing in this way is,
you save at least one third your secd, and are
almost certain of its growing. In the sprint;
and summer of 1349, isow'ed in tour differ
ent pieces, forty two acres in the above way,
six quarts to th6ttere of which""missed."
sowed nine acres in the "old way," viz: the
clean dry seed ; six quarts tathe acre. On
the whole field there may ie two acres tit
clover, not more. I sowed nine bushels of
plaster on this field ; not any on the other.
An experienced gentleman told me of this
way, and that be, had seldom if ever missed
having plenty of clover, and thick enottehv
too. '
CIILID RAT lIVG
Housekeepers ought to know that churn
ing can be done with any good churn in fIYO
ta , fifteen minutes iri winteras well as. sum
mer, by basting the temperature of the cream
right—say sixty to sixty-tyro dvrees.
The temperature of an ordiAhlr sitting or
living room, in winter, titi be eimifortable, is
sixty-five to sixty-eighedegrees, and a closet
opening into such a todta, would be the best
place to keep the po t f is winter. _
In the summer the cieatil can be readily
reduced to the right temperature, .by break
ing up clean ice and putting it into the
churn. •
A thermometer, which is.necessatit to reg
ulate these matters, cost but one 4ollat ;and
such an investment every, farther ought to
make, who has churning to - do, and, thus
save labor and.time, Which• is money, and
make this much dreaded part of the labor
of farmers' wives and daughters :much

a few' remarks in regard to feeding theat to

readers.
They may be . turned to profit by feeding
them to hogs, COWS, horses and sheep, as they
are admirably, adapted to promote ilie - thri,4 l

yelp strong prejudice azainst feeding theta Ifo.
C,CIW - p ; but the idea that cows fed upon them,
will shrink their milk, is altogether absorb
that is, when fed la* judicious manner, with s
ripe well manured apples,' -.1 , hteve no doubt,
that fed too freely, when the food taken is of a
succulent and fermentable nature, it wili be
likely to produce lever; but overfeeding withi
potatoes Bc.c., will be just as likely to prove
injurious. As to the quantiey which should
be given a common sized cow, I would not
recommend more titan a peck to half a bushel,.
according to the appetite of the animftl:•;—
This amount will answer the 'purpose of a
libeial feeding with hay and grain.
