THE COAL TRADE.
We stated a short time ago, that the canal
Commissioners had removed the drawback of
Li 7 cents per ton, on Coal passing through the
Delaware Division of th e Permsylvania Canal.
_The Managers of the Lehigh Company, who
irde a corresponding reductionconditionally,
we believe,at the time the drawback was gran

• toll of 12centsper ton on all Coal that passes
through these avenues' to market. The_rates
of transportation will vary but littletrom last
year. The quantity of Coal from this Region

The Delaware and Hudson CanalCoinpany

50,000 tons—and the Washington company,
a new enterprise, are making arrangements
to furnish about 150,000 tons of Coal the
-*present year. These compaaies are engaged
in building a large number of Boats, varying
in capacity from 140 to 150 tons; for the
'navigatiom of the enlarged Canal, which will
be ready in the Spring. With these 'boats,
their Coal can be conveyed' directly to New.
York, And all:the markets on -the Hudson

which gives, these companiei increased facili !

Qur Canal and Rail Road Companies will
have facilities for transporting about 200,000
tons more front this Region, than was fur

depend upon the rates of toll and transporta

H. Alter, Joseph Bensinger, John W. Hepler.

eron, U. L. Vliet, Henry-L. Cake.
The - follo - wing, among other resolutions,
were passed :
Resolved, That a change of the present ad
valorem for a Specific duty on iron, one oTi
the great Staples of Pennsylvania, would be
vastly beneficial to our State at large, and
that. our Representatives in Congress are
earnestly desired to use all legitimate means
.to effect that change in oar revenue laws.
ResolvetL That we rze the principle
of individual liability k charters, as
purely 6einociatic, and highly beneficial to
the public, aid that our Democratic Repre
sentatives are hereby requested to vote for no
bank charter that does'lpot contain the 'lndi
vidual Liability' clause.
ileplred, That we cannot recognise the
loose and, irresponsible doctrine'of the Whig
party in rard to the Banking: system, and
their efforts to fasten upon the public a mass
of issues, which; fromithe principle of their
creation are only calculated to add to the de
preciated. paper now in use, and to encourage
the erec tion of Banks ostensibly in every
mountain gorge, while practically these
Banks will be kept in the broVers' offices of
our large cities, the issues of which can be
depreciated at the will of the Brokers.
Bolved, That we decidedly approve of
the doctrine of non-intervention on the Slave
question. That much as we rret the ex
istence of slavery we cannot so fur forget our
duty as American citizens,
recognising the
Constitution of the United States as the-Su
preme Law of the Land, as to interfere with
the domestic laws regulating the right of
property of citizens of our sister States.
We are glad that our Locotoco friends have
taken ground twainst the present iniquitous ]
Tariff of 184 V-;, in the 'first resolution. A
change fronfthe;erd ralorem system to specific
duties, would accomplish something, but
is ,generally admitted by, the candid portion of
all parties, that the duties on both Coal and
Iron, ought to be materially increased. Penn
sylvania' interests are suffering to a greater
extent than those of any other State in the
Union by the operation of the Bill of 1846,
and no Pennsylvanian ought to:;rest satisfied
until a change is effected.

0:2 Meeting of Volnleers.—A Meeting of
Volunteers, consisting of members of Com
pany B, of Pottsville, which served during a
portion of the Mexican war, was held at
afoRTI3IER'S Hotel, in this Borough. on Sat
urday last. •
Capt. NAGLE was called 'to the chair. and
F. B. KAESCIIER, appointed Secretary.' The
following are the proceedings of the meet
ing
Whereas, The Members of. Company B.
Ist Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, who
served in the war with Mexico, until hon
orably dischar4e-ed, were among the first to
offer their services to the ;Governor, (when
troops were called,) to 'maintain the honor
of the Country, and protect its interests on
the plains of Mexico : and although their
duty to their Country impelled them prompt
ly, and cheerfully to leave their hona, their
domestic- comforts and enjoyments, and all
they held most dear, to undergo the hard
ships and dangers incident;to a Campaign in,
Mexico.
And whereas, After the 'acceptance of the
service of the Company by our late Governor,
the Coo - Tony was ordered ;by he, Adjutant
General of the State, to report to- Surgeon
King, of the United States Army, in Phila
delphia, for inspecticin, which order was
promptly obeyed ; from whence we marched
to Pittsburg, the place Of - rendezvous. The
paymaster'of the United Mates allowed us
pay only for the most direct route4rom Potts
ville to Pittsburgh, nearly one hundred miles
less than the allowance of the Philadelphia
Volunteers, when in act we actually march
ed one hundred mites further.
And whereas, The Paymaster of the U. S.
also refused to us mileage from the place of
rendezvous, where we were mustered out of
the service to Pottsville, the place of enroll
ment, to 'Which' we were justly entitled by
the Militia livees of PenOsylvania.
And whereas, The said Company on their
route from Philadelphia to Pittsburg, were
obliged to pay the a,genta of the State, the;
full amount clairne&fier transportation and
subsistence, when in numerous instances the
members of the Company were invited and
partook of the ..bOtmtiful hospitality of the
generous azapatriotic citizens along the line,
thus showin,g that they required and consum
ed but a very limited supply .of the subsist
eiteefumished by the State. Justice to the
Volunteers who so ,promptly rallied. around
the Standard of their country at the call of
the Governor of the'State, detnands that the
amount of money paid by them for transpor ,
tation a n d subsistence to Pittsburg be refund-
And whereas, We believe it to be just and
right that those who felt it an honor - to re
present the old Keystone, and peril their
lives in their Country's cause, should receive
the full mileage to which they are entitled
by the Militia laws of the State; and believ
ing, therefore, that injustice has been done
us, we would respectfully pray the Senate
and House of Representatives of Pennsyl-
Tanis for.an investigation of the causes of
complaint herein set forth. ;
Therefore Resolved, Thai the pinCeediem,
of this meeting be sent to The Governor, and

inStructbig the Sena
torial Committee to repoyt a bill embracing
the Wilmot proviso, 'was• kid on the table,
on Monday last, by a dc*ided majority. Mr.
CASEY, Mr: Pima's, and several others from
Pennsylvania. Whigs and Democrats, voted ,
in the affirmative. The principal objct these
gentlemen had in view, was to lay aside for
a time, that abominable fire-brand, so as to
enable them to 'seize hold of the Tariff ques
tion. In view of the large Locofoco Free
'Trade majority in Congress, it will be actu-1
ally necessary for our members, to do, occa
sionally, a little harm, to bring about great
good ;—that is, they must accomodate, as far
'as practicable, their friends from the South,
to receive sufficient strength to rasa a proper
Tariff. I never believed, after I knew the
political complexion of the present Congress,
that a Tariff bill to suit Pennsylvania, could
be passed,—nor have I since seen anything'
to change my mind. If, however, Mr.l:;/TMAN
continues in the conservative policy, which',
has thus far marked every vote and 'move
meet he has made, he will gather together,
in all probability, sufficient material to operate
with ; and then, by:refusing to go with the'
Internal Improvement men of the West and
South-West, unless the sustain his Tariff
'schemes, I would not lie much surprised,
after all, if he succeeded in accomplishing his
ends. The Committee of Ways - and Means,
as every body knows, is against any ehange
of the Tariff,--General Bairor, the Chairman,
-being one of the most ultra Locofoco Free
Traders in the House. To refer the question
to such 'a committee. everything could, be
lost, an nothing gained. The numerous
petition from the Coal Region hare, there
fore, not yet been presented ;—nor will they
be, until a clear field is prepared among the
mass of matter in she House, for their re
ception.
\No further confirmations of Pennsylvania
appointments, have yet been made. The case
of Ali.:Uollector. Lewis, is exciting much in
terest. 'lt is hard to conjecture the result.—
I should jiill,ge, however, from the little I
know of his position, that he will be . con
firmed. What gives additional interest to the
matter, is, that theLocofocos are 'squabbling'
about it ! Col. PORNO, JANES BUCHANAN,
and others, on the one side; and certain em

Sonal grounds he may have to base it upon,
~
is a matter of regret to their mutual friends
-,for, leaving politics altogether out of the
question, Mr. J.,- is a meritorious oentlemaa - 1
rtentoying splendid - Literary rie"eomplitifi- -
'meats; much experience ofpractkal life, was
actively eagagett in the service of his country
during the'bresican War, and is a steadfast
Whig.
Tuesday last, was previously appointed;
~ .
in the Senate, for the consideration of Mi.
c.av's Compromise Resolutions on the Sla
;very•question. The Capitol. on that'day,
.teas ,literally surrounded with people, and
'the excitement consequent upoallie Tumor
that he would address the Senate; was intente.
There is a feeling here, in respect to this
'great old man, that cannot be described,—but
hat understand so'mething of it when I
tell you t g,en tlemen were crowding around
the avenues of the Senate Chamber, on the
0 dap in question, eagerly pressing one hun
dred dollar bills for scats in the galleries!
;:The Senate convenes at 12 o'clock, but at
nine o'clock in the morning, every available
seat had been secured.
~, At about 12 o'clock, (the galleries having
all been surrendered to the ladies,) the dear
souls gathered around the doors of the Sen•
ate; pleading for admission upon the floor.—
' By a rule of the Senate, no one is privileged
to enter the floor of that body—so even the
soft'prayers of the ladies could not avail.—
Senator Foort, ' however, finally appftred
among them, and stated that he would' make
a speech' to have the rule laid aside butupon, his turning. a ' rush" TraSmade, land
the point carried !
. The fl oor bf the Senate was pretty well filled
and of course no one dared turn 'em turn
iint. But no gentlemen, except mem
bers could get in, unOr any circumstances.
The principle of :his-) compromise resolu
lions, notwithstanding the loud opposition
uttered against theist in the South, will be
'sustained, 'and the country thereby relieved of
thesnost exciting and dangerous issue ever
involved in the proceedings of its National
councils:\

the Bill, and it hung in glorious uncertainty
for seYeral days. Its friends, however,' Mi

The amendment of Mr. CEsssui; rep:aria°. the
Trustees to give Bond; and further
the Stockholders individually liable, :&c: were
voted 'Alourn by the- Democratic side of . the
House. A diluted 'amendment, relating to
individual liability; 'Was then offered by Mr.
Lunn, and adopted: _tie Senate still further
diluted, or rat* neutralized this self same
section, and,of course tkie'Honse concurred.
p,vos then offered a section which pro
hibits the company from declaring dividends
on :their .capital, until the interests on the
bon& is paid, which was also carried.. Mr.
IClrtaliqy.a, of Lebanon, offered an additional
section, requiring the company •to pay their
bank standing taxes to the Commonwealth,
which was agreed to after sortie squirming
on :the part of the borers. Mr. KILLINGER
offered another section, compelling the com

amendment in a speech of some length, and
was .replied to by Mr. Binnar., of Philadel

the Bill passed, after some Buncombe speeches
on ;the subjedt of Corporations in general, and
the defunct United Suites Bank in particular.
The very. object, as I perceive from , the

it. , The thanks of your Operatois, however,
