Her interests; which have been neglected for
years, are justheing fostered. The passage of a
general manufacturing law, which incorporates
manufacturing companies, in which persons of
limited means will be permitted to join, bids fair
to produce much goad for the Stale. - Provisions
have been made for the final extinction of the
State debt; and the prrject now on foot to connect
our State with the West by the Central R. Road
will have a most beneficial effect upon the State.
This work is under way, and it will not require
a very sagacious mind to tell what its effects will
be when completed. All these things will tend
to deist& the condition of the State. Up to this
time we have been laboring under many disad
vantages, the removal of which is all that is neees

The people of this State are just beginning to
experience the r ffecta of Whig Legislation, end
the beneficial acts, abuse alluded to, are but

of liquidating the debt, but; on the other hand,
whenever there Was any money to be derived from

TIIE CASLIDIA.Iif TROUBLES
We published last week's brief account of the
disturbances in Crinada. The storm which had
been brewing, broke out with great violence, and
though somewhat expected, has astonished
many by the Went to whiCh the loyalists have
carried the matter. The Cause of till this diffi
culty originated in the passage through both
houses of Parliament, by large msjorities, of a
bill appropriating $400,000 toward indemnifying
individuals for loses sustained in the dustruction
of property during the rebellion of 1537— l and the
approval of that bill by the Colonial' . Governor.—
Soon after the bill had been signed, the tocsin Of
rebellion was sounded, and thousands, -indignant
at the course pursued by the Colonial Governor,
rushed to the standard of the tories, who, strange
to say, heretofore have always been the firm and
staunch friends of the government, and assaulted
the House of Parliament, and finally destroyed it
by fire. The fire of was then kindled,
and the effete are visible ito all who read. The
bill, indemnifying those pertaine for tosses sustaio•
ed in 1837,,ia intlemt, ifying the rebels of that
period, while the friends of the government here
(afore, dissatisfied with this conduct, have them
selves rebelled, and demand sati-faction. Great
violence has been committed .b . ,vrt . te tories, and
the Governor has' been burnt in effigy its all por
tions of Canada, while he is biased at and treated
in the Moat contemptible manner whereverohe
goes. Meetings have been held praying for the
recall el Lard Elgin, the Gov•unor. •
This event in Canada has given visa to various
speculation+ relative to it+ annexation to the Uni

proceedings in Canada have been resorted to in
order to mum motion the project of annexation.
Much as Canada might bedeeired.and convenient

that any good would result from such a course.
The southern people, look with a j odour' and

would destroy the balance of poretr, they wou'd
anoke for the annexation of Cubs, and would no:

The Lo:ofocoa hang to the dikes, which have

MAY,—April has taken its departure: May.

when young folks can ramble among the hills in
search of flowers and indulge in their youthful pro•

the year. How M'y received its name is a mystery
to a great many and relative to this tact there are a
great many opinions. It is supposed to have reedy
ed its name from Romulus, the founder of Rome, who
gave it the appellation in honor of the senators and
noblemen of that city, who were denominated MA..
JORES. On the other hand it is supposed to have de
rived its name from 21111 A, the mother of Mercury.
in consequence of having sterifiees offered to her
upon the first day of this month. It matters little,
however, whence it derived its name: it is enough
fur us to know that it has a name!—and a prettier one

FIRE IN TAM MR,II,V.—We learn from the Ta

on Wednesday night, the 25th alt, near the corner
of Foundry Street. It broke out in the shed at

for the calmneis of the evening, and the great efforts
of the neighbors to extinguish the gamea. the greater
port of that section of the town would. doubtless,
soon have been wrapt in one living sheet of fire.—
We . believe the citizens of 'Fornoqua, hove not yet
procured a Fire Engine. In such a town as Tama

these latter days, and although Miss Martha's

cannot be explained satisfactorily, I can see no
