We observe that a Message has'been transmit-

nor, recommending some measure by that body,
by which to honor those volunteeralfrofil this
State who divtinguishcd themselves in the St ezi.
can War. We are glad to notice.that something
of the kind has been recommended. ' Whateier
the Legislature may feel disptsed to contribute,
hovel , ey valuable in its character, we feel free to.
soy that it will be but small compensation for the
service the volunteers rendered the Country in
the hour of her. peril. We ail recollect with what
alacrity the volunteer: of this State, and especially
those. f oar county, when the loud blast of war

rang-through the land.icalling ' upon the citizens
of this State, to marchin defence of the Republic'
siarted for the_scetio of. codified, leaVing home
and its comforts—families and friends for the sake
of their Country.f. Wedotibt whether there ever
was a nobler sight presented tp the . ,world than
the mustering of the volunteer force of the coun
try to fight in the Mexican war. Accustomed to
leading a civil
s and peaceful . life, unacquainted
with the horrors of war, and .the difficulties under
which they would have to labor they 'Vlirith i one ac
cord, withotat' thinking of nothing but their coun
try, started willingly with their muskets opus
their shoulders. Their actions too, while aiding
to maintain the fl ig of the Republic, were sorb
that will defy history for a.parellel. Greece, he
roic as she was, and much as she urged her sons
to battle, has in this her equal, if not her superior.
Had it not been for the volunteer systemn at that
moment) we believe there would have been weep• .
ing instead of rejoicing, disgrace instead of hon
or. We need refer but to one battle in which
the volunteers won fns themselves undying honor.
That battle is Buena Vista!—a bottle that will go
down to posterity bithe side of Pherson., Mara.
thon arid Waterloo. The victors of such battles
deserve well of their country.and we hope the Leg
islature will show itself patriotic enough to do hon
or to those whose bravery has brought such honor
upon our country. In ancient countries, the leaders
of an army only, were treated in the most glorious
manner.. Those who fought under them, and
who, in a great many cases contributed to the
success of an engagement, bad to stand back
whilo the Conqueror was drawn in triumphal pro,
cession and greeted everywhere by an enthusias

the basis of lur institutions, it is the object of the
people to do honor to all, privates as well as ofii•
cent, who distinguish themselves in the service of
their country.

TUE PROGRESS OF FREEDOM
• It must be cheering to every lover of liberty in
this and other lands, to observe the progress which
the cause of freedom is making in the old world.
In the courst!.,pf a short time iwo Republics have
been declared, whose government will be that of
pure Democracy. But a little over'a year since,
the people of France. tired of the rule of a , citi•
zen - King," determined upon a change of govern,.
meat, and led on by a resolute purpose, succeeded
in driving from the throne a King under whose
Adrniois!ration they had tasted the woes of such
a government. She is now a Republic—has h. r
Pr,sident-and so far has succeeded pretty wetl—
and it is to he hoped that the will continue to
prosper, and show to the citizens of the old World
the capability of man far sir-government.. But
the cause is still onward, and but a few Jaya
since we published the cheering intelligence of the
establishment of the Republic of Rome. Her
citizens too hard imbibed the spirit of ,Freedom,
and the proclamation of a Republic, in a place,
surrounded by monarchial influences on every
'ide, shows that the tide is onward, and will not
cease„to lbw until the desired object shall lin;ve
been aceomplished—the establishment of Repub.
lies in the whole of Europe. The day, we
here, is not far distant which will witness the
"ernancipattun of the people of Europe horn Abe
ruh) of monarchy. There are obstacles • hi the
wary, to be sure ; but time and the .uprising spirit
in favor of the cause of freedom, will eventually
accomplish these ends.
WONDERFUL, IF TRUE
The Harrisburg Telegraph oU last week gives
the following account of an experiment in Clair
voyanee —"The following bit of Clairvoyance,
which happened one day lest week, is not - only
novel but extraordinary. Mrs. Loomis and her
daughter who wrought this miracle, as we mcy
well say, has delivered two Lectures in that bor
ough which were well attended by. a highly re
spectable audience: A gentleman had, some years
ago, Sent some. imp 'Thant papers to a gentleman
lately holding a high positiOn in the State Gov.
ernment, and, on calling for them, failed to get
any earsfaction. Resource wee had : to Mrs.
Loomis, after long searching, and she ,consented
to try the experiment —the owner of the papers
offering a reward if they were found. The gen
tleman to whom they hail been sent was brought.
and Mks Martha was placed in a el airvayant
state. She immediately told him where the pa
pers were, in a box in his room. The talkies
proceeded to ihe pl ice designated, and found the
papers, as Alas Mar:ha had stared. Mrs. L. and
her daughter are strangersin Harrisburg and bad
never seen the gentleman in avho‘e house the
papers were. nor hid any one told them where he
lived. This is certainly a very extraordinary
case.

dwellings in the vicinity were several times blaz

slaughter-house of Mr. Wiliam Shirk. with about
4,000 pounds of tallow, hides, des.; stable of

stable of Jahn Krause, E.g. The Courier fur
