the Republic, has been enacted in the Honse of
Representatives. Mr. Greeley's rmileage refirm,”
was at the bottom of the affair. Mr. Greeley has
commenced a reform, which, if accomplished, must
result in a vast amount of - saving, to the country.
But the people have seen bow his efforts in behalfi
of a reform of the mileage system hare been ap.
predated hp some of the other members. Binh
attempts had been undertaken prior to Mr. Gree
ley's effort—but always faded. The publication
of the members of Genoese with their mileage
affixed to their names, has shown the people that
the fair thing is not altogether done by members
of Congress. Members, unintentionally perhaps,
take more than their legal mileage; but when an
attempt is made to reform a law which is known
Ito be so faulty, they should treat the mover of
such a law with respect and deference. We
might here'irive an instance of the imperfections
or the mileage law. Mr. Morse, a member of
Louisiana, in the course of a debate the ether day,
was 'eked how much his expenses were in coming
to Washington. He replied.sloo; and this gen
tleman's pay for Coming to Washington,sccording
to present allowances, is $2OOO ; another member
from New York, whose expenses are $lO, receives
$lOO. Such is the law whiCh Mr. Greeley is
endeavoring to reform. The success with
which, so far, he has mit, is known to our leaders.
The people are becoming interested in this
matter. They see that extravagance has been
practiced. The effort, of Mr. Greeley are being
appreciated by the people, and no matter how
much some members of Congress may oppose his
measure, they have determined to stand by him !
Few of the members are aware of the sensation
which Mr. Greeley's action his produced in this
State, and from what we see in other papers, we
are led to infer that the people everywhere are be.
coming interested. Mr. Greeley has battled so
for manfully for the rights of the people; and it
becomes their duty as well as that of the press to
stand by him, if they desire abases reformed iu the

Why, each conduct is unparalleled, and the ex
pulsion of Mr. G. would seal the fete of alt who
had voted for his expulsion. The people—and it
must be remembered they are the sovereigns—
would send forth such an indignant rebuke as
would confound all who had participated. It is
contrary to the spirit of the age—to Hepublicanism
—to expel a man for attempting to bring about
reforms in the Government. And how have they
been libelled ?' If they consider themselves libel
let by the publication of truths, let them change
congas, and the effects hereafter will not result to
their detriment.
In conclusion, we again remark that the people
have become somewhat agitated upon the maser,
and the popular voice is on the side pf Mr. Grec-
The news lately received from California is
indeed of a startling character. Gold is being
found in more abundance than ever. And those
who write from the Gold Region, cry there hips
end to the article. This news has set thou-ands
agog, who are now preparing to start for the Re
gion, and thousands more would go were they
possessed of the means, Vessels have recently
sailed from Philadeiptsis; New Bedford, Poiton,
New York, Connecticut, and liater plr;ces s and
many more will sail in a abort time. We observe
in the Washington Union of the 2 let instant,
some official informatiOn. Lieut. Larkin re
ports to the State , Department, under slate of
"Nov. 16th, and says, 4-that gold is found in lumps
weighing from one to torn pounds." 'ln general,
the gold found in the Region alluded to by Lieut.
Larkin, is purer than at the old diggings. Some
lumps weigh as much as sixteen pounds eacht—
The Indians give, at, ounce for a calico shirt.—
Men who were beggars lost June, are now worth
$20,000. The Gold , Regions are:known to ex
tend three hundred mile.!—and probably one
thousand! Letters from Commodore Jobes
state that things are in a deplorable condition.—

Another officer writing to General Towson; at
Washington, says that Gold seekers are meeting
with great success. But he says,. provisions,
clothing, and all the necess tries of life; are at the
most exorbitant prices. Living hes ever been ex
pensive in that country, but now it passes ell
reason—board four dollars per day, 'Washing five
to six dollars per dozen. Merchants' clerks are
receiving from $l.BOO to $3,000 per annum sala
ry ! What the Government will Jo for civil of
ficers, the writer says, he does not know. Selaries
will hale to correspond with the times. Them
of Governors, Judges, dec., as allowed in the
United States, will hardly compare with that paid
to salesmen and shop clerka there.
The greatest difficulty yet experienced is the

moment they land upon California's shore.—

The small pox exacts to some extent in our
Borough. The disease is confined principally to
those residing in the outskirts of the town, sod

This gentleman, a representative in Congress
from this State, has been recommended, by the
Pennsylvania Delegation, to Gen. Taylor, as a
suitable person for the Secretary of the Treasury.
Mr. Stewart is well known, not only to the peo
ple of this State, but to the people'of the linited
States, and his selection as a Cabinet Officer
would, so far as we are able to judge, meet with
general approbation. Pennsylvania ought to
be represented in the Cabinet, and if the Secreta
ry of the Treasury is to be Oen to one of her
eons we know of no one more deserving end bet
ter qualified than. Mr. Stewart. The office re
quires a man of sound judgment, strong intellect,
legislative experience, and one who is intimately
acquainted with all the resources 'and wants of
tho country. ' Such a men Mr. Stewart is known
to be. Hip exposition of the fallacy ofthe free
trade doctrines of Pulk and Walker shovii him to
be perfectly familiar with all the duties which
devolve upon en incumbent of that office. His
efforts in behalf of the Tariff '42 hive been untir
ing and the .light his speeches spread over the
State no doubt;•aeaisted the Whigs to redeem this

POSTAGE.
This subject has' received considerable atten
tion of late. It is a question of much importance
and one in which every man, woman and child in
the land is interested. There is a Poat Office
WV before Congress now, the general principle
of which is a three.cent Fustage in advance on
541 f ounce letters ; five centa if not pre-paid ; two
ounce newspapers one cent for any distance, and
a half cent within 50 miles for' one a half ounce
newspapers
The podtage of half a cent uron newspapers
within 50 miles is little, it is true; but why not
permit newspapers to pass free of postage to any
point of the county is which they are published
Newspapers should be permitted to pass throu.ih
the mail free to any point of the county in which
they rasp be published, and until such a law be
posses! by Congress the people—they who are
most interested in the matter—will not be satis
fied. / This bill, should it become a law, will
meet the disapprobation of this people. We live
in an age when the dissemination of intellig-nce
shOuld be fostered, nil every tax laid upon news.
papers, may ho considered a tax upon intelligence
and education. This, in a land which boasts its
republican instiutiond, should not be. Cheap
portage is an object in which the people 'ore in
terested, and the enactment of a law which will
allow papers to be transmitted to any point of a
county in which they may be published its the on
ly law with which the people will be. satisfied,—
With the proposed reduction of postage upon
letters, we have no fault to 6nd. We hope the
Press will speak out.
SCHUYLKILL CANAL BOATS
•We learn that the Trustees of the float Fund
base abandoned the idea of running their own
boats, end are now disposing of them to Boat
Captains on very accommodating terms. The.
Boots are worth about $l5OO, and they -require
$2OO to be paid down, and $5O per month during
the boating season, until the purchase money is
paid in full, This is decidedly. .the best course
the Company con pursue under -existing circum
stances: If the Company had adopted our sug
gestion which we made about.eighteen months
ego, and offered a drawback for's_ period of one,
two and three years, they would - have had the ea.

CANAL LANDINGS.
We learn that it is the desire of the Schuylkill

the year—ind the River Wall at the Dock at
Mount Carbon has been built so that extensions
can be mode at that point whenever the trade will
require it. They estimate that the Boat, Car and
Landing facilities are sufficient, if used with
reasonable diligence, to accommodate a Coal ton
nage of 600,000 tone. They have also pinches.

"Although the stockholders have not had any re
turn from their investment, since the sear 1842. and
may probably now be deprived of such return for
several yaars more, there can ha but little doubt that
the work will eventually again prove profitable.
It has been enlarged to meet the growing demands
of the community. for one of the. most Important
necessaries of lite a the annual Increase in the Coal
trade will soon fill it with profitable tonnage, and
those who might otherwise be disposed to despond.

necessarily drove all the trade into a new channel;
tint every inducement has been offered by a very
