of the ridiculous pride and alTertetion of the would
be 'fashionable, and the excruciatingly 'polite, of
thisworld.: At supper, 'a lady sat down to the ta
ble with something of the flourish and toss of the
head, expressive of her consequence And
°contempt of all on board. •An honest, queer look
ing, but genteei young man seated hie:lslof oppo
site,nnd not being in the mood Of waiting long,
helped himself :.to a piece 'of bread, and with his
„own knife alsoitook a pike of butter to keep it
company. The Lady (?) immediately bridled up
and showed by her manner that something unu,u
al had occurred :

She was obeyed, arid the butter vanished to her
