But all unennsclonsly
She scattered smiles, like kihilling darts, around her;
And all. alike; the satne sweet being fuerid her,
Simple and free. .
Love lives in all :blues bright ;
And Fanny loved atteady, but site ne'et •
Had whispered of her passion, save in prayer
To the stilt uigbt.
A strange and silent boY
Gazed distantly on Fanny, and there came
Into her heart a fond and holy flame,
Breathing of joy.

But ha was lad in youth.
Nor ever gave he token to the maid
Of passion, in like holiness.renil.
With heart and truth.

Time rolled, and Fanny grew
To sharerbe sadnsss ofthe dreaming boy,
'And joy in her sad dreaming the alloy
Was pleasure too.
While still around her hung
A throng of glittering rivals, none were chosen ;
And that one burning heart sup held a frozoli

Like the, volcanic fire
That smothers 'neath a pyramid of snow,
So in imprisoned torment seemed to glow
The youth's desire.
Time rolled—and came a day
When Fanny for me amt time wept, alone,
For he on whom her wealth of love was thrown

A THRILLNG INCIDENT
. .
We find the following thrilling. adventure re
lated in a late !mintier of the New York Weekly
Messenaq, but whether it is from the pen of Ma
jor Noah or not is' nJte than we can say. Read
and weep. '
I paged up the natural avenue and came upon
the greenl My :feelings: were very poetical as k
walkettilowly towards the church. I enter
ed. A Popular preacher was holding, forth, and
the little }meeting-house) was much crowded. Sev
eral persOns wsrc standing up, and -il soon die-,
• covered that 1 must refill!' my perpendicular po
sition, as every Seat was 'crowded. I, however pas
god up the aisle until I gained a position where I
could babe a fair view of the faces of nearly all
present.ltlany of the eongreg, ation looked curiously
at me, fdr I was a grudger fothem all; In a few
moments,' however, the! attention of every person
appeared iu be 4bsorbedisi 'the ambassador, of grace
and I alSo began to take au interest in thel e discourse
The spcalier was fluent, and. many of his flights
were even sublime. Tfio music of the wood and
the fragrance of the, 'health seemed to rrspond to
his eloquence. ~ •- . r :
Thed it was no great stretch of the, imagination
to fancy, that the fair creatures around me, with
their pouting lips and artless iniiiicenee, were beinLa
of a higher al,here. As my feelings. sere thus
divided between the beauties and blessings of. the
two wcridg, ano wrapt iii a sort of poetical devotion,
I detected seine glances at me of an animated
character.
I need not describe the sensations• e perienced
by a youth when the eyes of a beautiful , woman
rest for a length of time upon his countenance,
'and when he imagine's himself to be n object
of interest to her. J I returned her glances With.
interest, and threw rill the tenderness into my eye - s
„which the scene, my meditation, and the preachers
disci:in - me had inspired ; in my heart, doubting not
the fair 3, - oung-damSel ipc)ssessed kindred feelings

otherwise? '
~ . .
. She had -been Wert and nurtured amidst these
wild and romantic scenes, and was made up of ro
mance, of 'poetry and tenderness; and then I
thought of the purity : , of woman's-- love-.her de
votion—her bulb. lonly prayed that I might
meet her where we Might enjoy . a sweet inter
change of sentiment. flcr glances continued:
Several times our eyeS met. 'My heart ached with
rapture. At length the benediction was. pro
nounded.,. I lingered about the Premises • until I
saw the dark-eyed daessel get out for home on foot.
'Old , that the custom 'ofsoeiety would permit; for
we aresurely one 'in soul. Cruel formality!
that ''rows up a barrier between hearts made for
each other! Yet Vfollowed her. She looked
behin ; and I thought she evinced some emotion
at ra gnizing mires 'the stranger of the .day. I
then• nickelled inP-pase, and she actually slack

"liable young creature!” thought f; her fear

of her. She

My heart swelled to bursting. - I waded the spot

The Public Lands.
We know it has baen supposed iby many that
' the Public Lands _were the bona-fide property of
the General Got:chimera, and that Mr. Clay's bill
was to deprive it of an actual property therein' fur
the purpose of distribution among the States. In
en article of yesterday we endeavonid to show .hat .
the facts are the reverse of this, and that the Gen
eral Government is holding over, *hat by right
and alt law and usage is another's; to whose use
and benefit it' is the object of Mr.; Clay and the
Whig party to restore it. We subinit the case to
the candid consideration of the property holders
andtax payers of Pennsylvania, if( they aro
to permit this property thus tel be held over.
and themselves to be taxed.to.the tUnutitit thereof,
that the general government, whicli has no longer
right nor claim to it, nor actual usefor it, truly en
joy its use and benefit? f
'This is one view of it. There is another, and
we deem it even a more importaiit; view to • take
of this subject. We mean its effeet upon the tar-
There are two important issui':s made up be
tween us and the advocates for the election of
Polk and Muhlenberg,—the tariff and the distribu
tion of these Irma. The friends of Messrs. Polk
and Muhleitberg advocate a Rect.4tze taritf, and
oppose the distribution -among the States of the
land money: It.requires - little ciphering to see
what this would lead us to. They will lay nu
higher tariff than is required for the expenses. of
the'government, over and above the receipts from
the land sales. The expenditoris of government
we may assume, at least in tinaCof , ptdice, to be
fixed, but the amount required, over, and above
the land sales, must be ever varying. The sense- '
quence resulting must be that thd tariff would be
eyes fluetnating. Sdy the gov't.:piment expenses
this year are $30,000,000, and the land sate -$2,-
000,00 U ; there must then be raised f..2e,000.000
from customs the only remaining; source of reVe
nue. But the next year or another year the land
sales are $12,000,0 . 00. Then down .the tariff
must go, according to their doctrine to $18;00,-
000. The receipts froin the lands, has been $2l,-
000,000. In that case the , tariff would go domt
to $6,000.000; or eight per cent, duty ominiporta.
lions.. Does not every one see how dis'aStrous
thii continued fluctuation would be to tat our man
ufri, eturing interesta, and how impossible it Would
be to induce capitalists to embark in manufaeturesi
protected in tints mannerby the Government! It I
is fur that reason, exclusive of the, fair right Which
is in the States, and their great need of it now to !
relieve their people from the burdens of taxation,
that the Whig party support Mr., Clay in his ef
forts to restore this rich Lund to its. right owners.
Then the whole $30,000,000 muSt he raised froM
customs. This will require about 30 percent. and
would'of itself be a certain protection as far as
went and would produce one important advantage,l
that of stability. The Capitalist would thus know '
the lowest that goVernment could :go, and what
would be the profits he might expect—the farmer,
•relieved from the Presence of tax gatherer, cantt
the profits of his crow—the mechanic, the certain
demand of his wares, and the laborer, the sum of
his wages. All trades would thrive, and peace,
and happiness and comfort would each show its
face in the cottage, the farm house, as well as in
the dwellings ofthe rich, taking place of gloom and
devondency, every Where and all arouiad, He
