This state of affairs presents a subject for reflec
tion—it exhibits s in bold relief the 'destruction
Which follows a mat-administration .of Govern
ment; and the immense sacrifices the people have
. undergo, when the business of the country is
prostrated. Six years ago, before the country was
'cursed with the blighting effects lof Van Boren
, Locofocoism, there were a sufficient number of
Boats on the line of Canal, to carry to market
27,000 tons of coal weekly, and the trade flourish
ed. .Tbe . destructive measures were consummated
--general prostration followed-4e coal trade did"
not escape—prices of coal arid freight. were.redu
iced to ruinous rates—no more boats were built—
others were suffered to rot—and' now, with two
avenues to market; Canal and Rail Road, the fa
citifies of both. are not sufficient at present to
Icarry twenty-three thousand font of Coal to mar
-1 tat weekly, four 'thousand tons less than
; was acre nowdatid on the Canal alone, six
years ago. The depreciation on Boat property
alone has exceeded hoe hundred thousand dollars.

The shipments from the Lehigli region for the
week ending on the 13th inst., amounted to 12,
