STAGE "vs. ;COACH.
.A little circumstance ociurred in Philadelphie,
a few days since, says the Germantown Telegraph,
:which is one of the best things we' have heard of
for some time. Everybody in and about the city
knows or has heard of Jimmy !ea -gay, the coach
'and cab ownera fellow who ; with as much - im
pudence stizarely falls to the lot of One man, pos
'wes a degree of shrewdness which has shoved
him alalg in his career qiiite prosperously. Jim,
!cto;. is a politician, and exercising considerable in
fluence over a certain class, it has given him en
extensive riequaintance in a circle, whichliis
Teal consequence only, could have obtained for
.him. -
A five days since, several gentlemen, among
theta distinguished Judge, were seated in an el&
gent parlor, when the door opened, and Mi. Hag
gerty' was announced. The distinguished
Judge,' mistaking-the name for that of Mr. Hack
ett, the celebrated actor, approached Jim, and offer
ing- him his hand in the most cordial manner, at
the mina time introducing himself, said—
' Mr. Hackett! lam very glad to see you. •
. 6 And I'm very glad to eee yon "—replied Jim,
in his usual rough brogue.
• 'I should suppose, Mr. Hackett,' continued the
JuJge, that it has been ten years since I last saw
,yottl ' •
'Yes, your Honor, I 'spas° its been that long

And your health, sir, I believe has been quite

when I left 'em not
- more nor half an hour ago'
By-this time the !distinguished Judge's' com
panions, who hid enjoyed .the scene amazingly,
could no longei abstain from tittering; and his
Honor,- suspecting that all was not right, inquired
very gravely . •
I presume, sir; I am addressing Mr. Hackett,
Of the stage 7. 1

thUndpred rim, in reply.
A eattatiy doctor, of homely breeding, courted
a brisk girl, the daughter of a farmer, whar was
peMuaded by her father to marry him, he having a
pretty good estate. . Accordingly the day was al).
pointed. But shortly after, spying a mare on
which the old man used to ride, and which, for her
easy 'gait,..was much esteemed, he, the Doctor, de
sired to have her given in to complete his matri
monial bargain,' but being refused, he flung away
in a buir, ind told the father he might keep his
slaugliter.—The girl was delighted ir ith this rap
ture ; but: soon; titter, the Doctor repented of his
folly, and came again to see her; when she was at
home alone. She pretended to have no krunv, ledg,e
of him.—'.Why, it is Strange,' said he, ;that You;
should so soon forget me. lam your old admirer,
-the Doctor: 'II cry you . mercy. sir,' replietfshe,
.1 do remember me of such a person; you are th e
geralemtui who came Wooing, my father's grey
mare. Your nristress is grazing in the ofehard,
and you may -Make your addresses to her if you
please. . .
It is scarcely necessary to- add, that this repar
tee so dashed him, that he never had the face to
speak.to her afterwards. . • •
