New Jersey Blues in ;notion.
No individual who was not present at the recent
State Convention in Trenton, can form en adequate
idea of the ch4racter of that assemblage. It was,
perhaps, every thing considered, the most imposing,
, cordial, and enthusisatic demonstration of popular
sentiment, ever witnessed in New Jersey. There
seemed to be but one feeling and one spirit, and a
stranger not cognisant of the real object, would have
supposed it an outpouring of the' citizens of all par
ties, met together to celebrate some national jubilee.
The Jersey Blues were there in thousands, many of
them having travelled from the• remotest parte of the
State, and all eager to participate in the good cause.
Flags, banners, and other devices, were to be seen in
greo variety; while music gave additional effect to
the scene, and together with the appearance of the
streets. the extent of the precession, the shouts of
the multitude, and the animated remarks of the sev
end speakers; served to forme spectacle truly ani
mating and gratifying. One object of attraction.was
a beautiful Canoe, mounted on wheels, and drawn
by eight splendid horses. Another was a Log Cab
in, with appropriate inscription!). and among them,
"IrOn will not find the String of
the Latch pulled in.”
Johnson's find band W3B also there, and the various
deleg..tions; designated by appropriate banners and
suitable! mottoes, rendered the affair as delightful to
the eye, ink it was exciting to the mind. Another
motto. which had been adopted by a large body ..f
mechanics and labourers, was to the following effect ,
CC Hard to be out of Employ
ment?) •
• It excited much attention, and appearedto interest
in au especial manner be tboueands of laboring
elapses in attendance. -
Another banner contained a sketch of the Capitol
at Washington, with Mr. Van Buren in his English
carriage at a distance, and a log cabin and a barrel of
hard cider in the foreground. But it is impossible
to describe even the most conspicuous emblems of
the occasion; while, if we were to give a strictly ac
curate account of the venous movements—of the
. bustle, excitement, cordiality, enthusiasm—we should
he deemed extravagant. Hundreds were present who,
in 1836, exerted themselves to the utmost for Mr.
Van Buren; and even then it will b remembered,
New Jersey gave her electoral voto for the Hero o
the Thames.
On conversing with gentlemen from carious parts
of the State, we found but one sentiment to prevail.
•• We were-never more confident," observed a ster
ling obi Democrat from the Interior, "and never, 'as
I solemnly believe, with better reason." The peo
ple, be added, are now the leaders ' They are far in
advance of the politicians, and you may Out Jersey
down, not only as safe for Harrison and Tyler, but
11 a larger majority than she has given on any oc
casion for vears.—Penn. kr:firer.
