and a candidate for re-election in Armstrong Co.

is not more, indepenoent, fearless dr, devoted friend
of Pennsylvania within her bdrders)is a -resident
of the same county as. Samuel Sturgeon. Upon
his arrival, every friend Of "David the Dodger"

" what kina%of a mar is this Sturgeon ?" To all
of them Mr. Johnson replied—"he is an honest
and respectable man—an estimable man—a MAN

of steam:
"By the multiplication of stationary
wash-tubs, and the power of steam, clothes
may be washed, dried, and ready for use,
in half an hour lafter they are given out.
Thu - dying process is accomplished in five
minutes, by spreading the clothes on
wooden horses atoning on Tail roads, and
leading into a large close apartment heated
to a very, high temperature by steam. A
rotary steam engine pumps water, supplies
steam to the kitchen, wash-room; &c.
cleans the knives and forks, Mots and
shoes, and has in reserve river enough
for other purposes."
It is said that, in a thunder gust on Sat
urday last, a hickory pole was shivered to
pieces in New Haven, Cont. We thought
that nearly all of these evidences of a
wicked idolatry had been struck down by
the repentant worshippers, in obedience to
public opinion ; it seems, however, hat
there is here and there one to be scathed
by the lightning,—ll. S. Gas.
A Remedy.--The New- York Journal
of Commerce publishes a communication,
in which it is stated that a napkin, satura
ted with boiling water, thrown upon the
stomach of a man, who was apparently
dying from drinking cold.4ater duping one

A meeting of the citizensof Pittsburg was held

hundred were appdinted, to make arrangements
for a public commirrioration of the Thirteenth of
August, the day fiTed foe a resumption of specie

free and enlightened citizens of this great Duion,
for the purpope of placing the "purge and sword
of the nation," into their own bands, in order to

hands of thii Patriotic William IL Harreiton of
Ohio, or some other staunch Republican, who
would go for his country, and not for a particular
"party;' are respectfully invited to attend a gen
eral county meeting, to be held in the Court
House, in the Borough of Orwigsburg, on Tues..
day the 31-st of July next, at half past 1 o'clock,
P. M. for the purpose of adopting such measures
as may be deemed necessary to secure the re-elec
tion of our excellent Governor, Joseph Ratters
sad for carrying out the great principles of

James River and Kanawha Improve
ment, Virginia. •
A Poblic ailing will be held In the town, of
-m• Lynchburg, on the 12. th September next, of
all tho work nut now under Contract, on the line
of the Canal between that place and the City of
Richmond.
This work consists of 39 Locks, 43 Culverts,
3 Aqueducts, 2 Towing path bridges. (one of
which ia across James river,) about 120 Farm
and Road Bridges. and from 30 to 40 sections,
besides -several heavy sections between Lynch
burg and the Blue Ridge.
The Locks will generally beof dry Masonry
sheathed with plank.
The situation of the work will be pointed out
to:Contractors by the Assistant Engineers on the
lint; and the general plans and specifications will
be exhibited at the Office of the subscriber, in the
City of R ichmend. until the 9th of September, and
in Lynchburg at the time of letting.
