The ill fated boweryTheatre was Completely de
stroyed by fire this morning, for the fourth tints.
The fire broke out in the carpenter', shop, where
no fire bad been in use during the ' day, nor bad
any candle been useel—it is therefore generally
believed That the destroctido of the Theatre was
caused ov incendiaries, in fkct it is beyond doubt
that such was the ease. The building well billy
insured. say for $35,000. but the scenery, proper
ties, &c. worth probably- $00.000,,wi1l he a total
lass, and by the unfiirtunale occurrence upwards
of 100 persons will be thr4vn out hi employment.
It had been proposed to giVe Mr. Cooke a benefit
at this house on Thursdaylnes.; but now the man
ager and proprietor, bas‘ been reduced to pre
cisely the same situation Mr. C, was-in. nothing
except an iron chest and two stores having been
rescued from the flames. •
The tavern neat the Theatre WAR also destroy
ed. and the house adjoieing much injured.
A stable-adjoining, the property of Mr. Horn
blin, was also consumed, and a coloured man
who was sleeping in it blWned to death.-11, S.
