8011111 writer in the Chronicle yesterday pitches
into the Ohio and Pennsylvania Railroad Com
pany for not constructing their bridge across the
Allegheny river at the Point. It is rather late
to discuss that question now ; but it looks weak
to assert that the bridge at the V oint would cost
one-third lees than where it Is located, and giv
ing (wen inducement that there a large revenue
might be derived in the ebapo of tolls. We un•
derstand something better will occur by permit
ting the erection of the bridge at the Aqaednivt ;
that instead of a revenue, the Company will
make a free bridge for foot passengers, a matter
,loudly oalled for by the masses for many years.

THE PAMOIIAMA of New York City still attracts
crowds of visitors. It exhibits this afternoon
at 8 o'clock and this evening. It will continue
its exhibit.ons here all next week, and exhibit
at Masonic Bali every evening and Wednesday,
Thursday and Saturday afternoon. It gives us
New York oity_its streets, buildings, squares,
vehicles, calvaciades, and people—in the most
vivid and life like manner. Ono may actually
see more of Now York by sitting an hour and a
half hero by this moving picture than by travel
ing about the city a week. The signs on the
buildings are all easily read, and the demon.
strator supplies what other information you
want, in an easy, agreeable, shorthand manner.
Tut Callaoltc says that on Sunday last Bishop
O'Connor administered the Sacrament of Con
firmation to forty persons, some of whom worn
adults, recently omverted, in St. Bridget's
Churoh, 7th ward. Mr. Tracy delivered an ap
propriate discourse on the occasion. Oa the
morning of the same day, about fifty children
made their first Holy Communion. It is not yet
quite two yeara since Sr. Bridget's Church we.
opened for Daigle Service, still, through the ex
ertions of the Rev. Mr. Tracy, its Congregation
has become not only well organized, but very
edifying.
&sax FIRS Esaiss.—The Board of Under
writers, at their meeting on Thursday, appoint
ed a committee, consisting of Masers. Coiling
wood, Ten-E rck, and Marshall to examine Low
ry's Steam Fire Engine, at the public trial. As
the City Councils, Firemen's Association and
Board of Underwriters have each appointed a
separate committee, it perhaps would not be out
of place for the members of the committees to
have a joint meeting prior to the trial, in order
that combined action relative to the matter may
be adopted.
THBATRE—Last Night of Miss Heron.—Those
at our play goers who desire to again see Miss
Matilda Heron in one of her beautiful persona
thrust mast not fail to attend the Theatre to
night, as this is positively the last time ehe will.
appear hefore a Pittsburgh aidienlio — for the
present. The piece selected for the occasion—
Ingomar—is n very popular 00 0, and the char..
eater of Parthenia, in which Miss Heron ap
pears, is well adapted to allow her a full exhi
bition of her abilities. We oottldeatly expect
to see a crowded houee.
—The benefit of Miss Heron, last night, was
a splendid affair ; the house was crowded from
pit to dome, and the utmost enthusiasm pre
vailed. Wo have seldom seen an audience that
contained a larger proportion of ladies. It
waifs " benefit" such as she deserved.
FALB'S PBSTENCES. —A man named Hugh Scot'
was sent to jail, yesterday, by Ald. M'Kentia,
for obtaining about forty dollars from Bryan
Monaghan, by faleo representations. The of..
fence was committed some time ago, but the de
fendant made his escape to Trumbull county,
Ohio, where he was employed on the Cleveland
and Mahoning railroad. Officer Dougherty ob.
tattling intelligence of his location, procured a
requisition from tho Governor, went out on
Thursday, arrested and brought him into town.
THE ADULTERY CASE —GeOrge Boyd and Mrs.
Monntz were yesterday brought before the Su
preme Court, on a habeas corpus, to test the
question whether they could he sent back to
Washington county for trial. The question was
ably argued by Col. Black and T. B. Hamilton.
The Court, after bearing the arguments, remand
ed the prisoners back to jail, until to-morrow at
ten o'clock, when a deoieion will be given.
SERIOUS ACCIDENT —A man named Peter Wil
bert, employed in -Mr. Correia's coal pit, near
South Pittsburgh, was dangerously iejared, yes
terday, by the falling io of the roof. Several
tone of dirt, slate, &0., fell down. A number
of his bones were broken, and he was otherwise
seriously itijured. His family reside in South
Pittsburgh.
" TRH OLD PLAY GROUND "—A beautiful
piece of music, bearing the above title, baa just
been issued, and is for sale by J. H. Mellor,
Wood street. The words of the song are by
Mr. Edward J. Allen, cur young and talented
fellow oitizto, the author of the "Oregon
Trail" lettere. The music by Mr. J. De Rover.
ADMITTED Ti TUE, Bna —Robert W. Smith,
Eeq , of Armstrong county, was yesterday ad
mitred to practice in the knpreme Court, on mo
tion of Joseph Knox, Eeq.
M.AMIA-A•POTU LY JAIL. —Three prisoners in
the oounty jail are sofftring from mania-a potu,
two of whom are females.
Walla old fogyism is struck dumb, and even
Young America tan no longer stand aloof with
the curl of incredulity upon his brow, it is high
time the public, one and all, should examine
stubborn facts and stern realities. Seeming im
possibilities but half a century ago, by the In
genuity of man have assumed a tangibility, and
no longer excite wonder or contempt. For the
past twenty years ingenuity has been exhaust
ed, and millions expended in the vain attempt
to construct a machine for making shingles, and
without a single exception, all have failed, un
til the resent invention of A. Kendall, which has
been ;pronouncedl by thousands the aohievment
of the age. The entrance to Ryan's buildings,
Fifth street, has become a thoroughfare where
the multitude daily gather to see the astonish
ing feats of the river and shaver. This machine
by an ingenious contrivance, by means of knives
converts logs or block , into ready made shingles
at the rate of several thousand per hour, in
a degree of perfection challenging comparison.
Within the past week rights for machines and
territory for speculation have been deeded for
five different States.
