BY ALICE CASEY
Mr. and Mrs, Dexter.-began to live with a

finer coach than their own, tbough seldom more

they had attended than they were able to give,
but not many; and DO lady wore finer jewels
or brocades than Mrs. Dexter.
They were not admired much, it is true, and

either pleasure or surprise, and least of all

Fire blazing before them, and mirrors flash

dered why they were not happy, and concluded
that they could not be possessed of that amount'
of wealth tha'. insured happiness, forth ho other
way could they account for the hunthrtun of
life they lived.
They did not sleep well at night—why, they
could not guess, unless it were the fault of their
beds; they most have more ft:merlons ones, if
in any part of the world they were to be obtained.
They had little appetite; the cook must be to

not entertain them; and visiting and visitors were
alike tiresome. if they had wealth enciaih to

The onto:lees of speculation were turned over,

languid and listleas;tinti their dancing coach
rode witl3,no mars ease and comfort than former
ly; the French Gooks failed to suit their appe
tites, and merchants and milliners were alike
unsuccessful in their attempts to meet their
wishes. At the end of a year of most extrava
gant diasipation,'.there came a crash in the off sire
of Mr. Dexter. From heedlessness or misman
agement, or both, the late venture proved an ut
ter failure, and dragged after It to ruin, cooks,
coaches and all.
" What can bo done 1" es 'd Mr and Mrs.
Dever. Acid, of course, the eouci laton was
anything but coming down. Truth must be
smothered and credit kept good. So thousaude
were borrowed, and sent searching after the lost
thousand's, and for a while the Dexters moved
in splendor and gaiety, an I were to outward op
-pear:tn. ces greatly to . be 'envied; bat in their
hearts they felt very much as if standing on dry
boards that for a moment surprcsood the fires of
arrearthgcutko.
" What shall we do V said both Mr. .and Mra.
Dexter, when no money could be borrowed.
They did not know ; they only felt anything,
anything but coming down.
What would all their fashionable friends say,
and how they would be avoided?—that was what
they dreaded more than any privation they would
have to endure.
They Gould devise no plan of notion ; but in
their efforts to keep np yet a little longer there
came a season of dodging and hiding, of prom
ising and postponing, of evasion and of almost
secret starvation. They grew thin and haggard;
their fine clothes looked like fine rage, or nearly
so, and the pinch of penury showed so plainly on
their faces that any further attempt at conceal
ment was boreless.
Poor Mrs. Dexter looked like a little white
paper woman, with a kind of smile painted on
her lips, for you might sec plainly enough it did
not spring from her heart, nod it seemed that a
breath of wind would drift her away as easily as
tbe froth from a milk pail.
Hell a dozen scanty fed fires wore horning in
the lima, when Mrs. Dexter seated herself by
one of them in mute and hopeless despair.
Night fell, and the heavy curtains made it doubly
night within the room. The doer opened stealth
ily, and her husband, like a snow drift, still and
cold, oame to her side.
" My dear wif,;," be said, presettly, "I would
not mind this terrible calamity but for you."
Hie voice faltered, and he put his arm about her
neck with a tenderness of manner that she was
not at all used to, though he had always been
kind and indulgent. Her heart had never stirred
as it then did, when she heard him say, " Here
is a thousand dollars, my dear." There actually
name a faint color to hoe cheek, and real smile
to the lip where the false one had been so long.
The happiness of that moment was worth all
the lost fortupe. "My good, noble husband,"
she said, "you mast not suffer on my account.
I am equal to any fortune aa long as you lore
me;" and the hands she laid on hie forehead
were like a pleasant !lean , g dew, Rod her kiss
on his cheek made him richer than he had ever
been.
The shell of a fortune in which they had been
living was broken, and they say, for the first
time, that there was a great world outside of it.
The anticipated misery of coming down lessened
wonderfully when they stood up and faced it.
All the fine furniture was sold, the French
cooks dismissed, dressing maids and chamber.
maids were sent away. Mrs. Dexter herself
took charge of the baby, and half the house let.
One servant and a small carriage wore all the
luxuries they reserved for themselves.

IMPORTANT KANSAS PRO.SLAVERS MOVYMENT
LS Gsonots..—ln another part of this paper oar
readers will find an interesting account of a very
important and signifioant Kansas pro slavery
meeting at Columbus, Georgia. It will be seen
from the prooeedinger of said meeting that the
extreme Beath have at last resolved that their
pro-slavery brethren in Missouri shall not belett
to fight the battles against the Northern Emi
grant Aid Societies single handed. On the con•
trary, It is proposed to raise a fund of four hun
dred thousand dollars, ae the contribution of
Georgia against the abolition colonizers, and in
behalf of the settlement of Kansas by men sub
stantially pledged to the institutions of the
South. Very well. Keep up the fire. If the
South can carry suffmient strength into Kansas
to shape the fundamental laws of the prospec
tive Stato r the question will be settled ; for it
will be utterly impossible for the Northern eedi
tioniets to keep her out of the Union on account
of her recognition of slavery. Squatter sover
eignty the teat. Let the South fight their
enemies with their own 'weapons, and pour in
their emigrants. The issue—a vital one to the
whole South—depends upon the settlers of the
Territory.
We extract the above morsel from the New
York Herald We think the State of Georgia
might do something better with her $400,000
than interfering with popular sovereignty in
Kansas. The people of that territory should be
permitted to settle their own affaire without the
interested interference of either Missouri or
Georgia. Save your money to redeem your rot

THE PACIFIC RAILROAD DISASTER.
The editor of the St. Louis News, wbo was a
passenger in the train on the Pacific, Railroad at
the time of the late accident, gives the following
account of it:
Soon we came in sight of he bridge' aerates'
the Gasconade river, about nine Mites from Hei.4
menu, anti about thirty-five fOm .reifenihn citii;
: The bridge *approached by aniembartkmettkP,
1 thirty feet high, which - teruilnates in a massive
I stone abntrutrat. Forty yards from the abut
ment, and just at the edge of the river stands
another staunch stone pillar, three more of
which reach to the other side of the stream and
support the bridge.
". The river is about two hundred and fifty
yards wide, and the bridge thirty feet -high al.
least. The Pioneer locomotive had - tressed the
structure safely, and was vraiting - 011 the other
side to see the result of our attempt. ;There ,
was no fear of danger, and no appreben on of
peril. We slowly moved along the emb ment
and came to the bridge. The locomoti e had
passed the first span, and had its foreitheels
above the first pillar beyond the abutment, there
being then, resting on the first ,span,. the loco
motive, baggage car and. two heavily Jostled pas
senger care. The weight was too much for. the
long, slender timbers which supported the rails
and the enormous lead above. Suddenly we
heard a horrid crash—it rlngein our-cars now—
and saw a movement among those in the oar in
which we were seated;.then there came crash
-om M—crash—tie each oar oamo to the abutment
and took the fatal plunge.
" The afar was but the work of an instant,
We were running slowly at the time, and the
sueoessive crashes oame,ou at Intervals of nearky,
a seoond. We 'ourselves were seated in the sev
enth oar, there being three behind ns; and when
we heard the horrid sound that- came up,,,as
each oar slowly and deliberately took the leap,
we hoped that our oar might stop before It.
reached reached the precipice. Bat no ; It seemed that
the spirit of rain •was beneath, determinedly
dragging each car to the spot, wrenching it from..
its taereoings, and hurling it to atoms beneath.
Six oars felt in ono mass, eooh on the other, and
were shivered into fragments. The seventh fell
with its forward end to the ground, but the oth.
er end rested on the top of the abutment. Those
in it were only bruised. The eighth and ninth
ears tumbled down the bank before they reached
the abutment.
Suoh a wreck we never saw, and hope never
to see egain. It was one undlstingnishable mass
o: wooden beams, seats, iron wheels and rods,
from beneath which came up groans of agony.
Those who could, crawled out of the rain imme
diately, and either sought to relieve their own
wounds or the wounds of their friends. Some
of them wept tears of joy to find their friends
alive, and others shuddered to find their friends ,

TEE BRIDGE AOROBB GASCONADE ETTER
(nom the Demoomt)
Our comments on what we styled, on yester
day, the pasteboard structures on the Pattie , '
seemed to have called forth a good deal of con
troversy in the community. We can only say
that we spoke of them in tbo only manner th t
we think they deserve to be noticed, and, al
though willing to affard room for every erplans,
time, yet have nothing to retract.
On yesterday, however, we were informed by
the officers of the road that in noticing the de
struction of the bridge over the ?doro we were
in error in stating that it was complete. Such
wa- not the case. The trestle work under the
bridge woe up—the sleepers had been laid—but
the upper work was not In such a condition as to
hold the frame together. The result was that
the aoeumulaUon cf drift, caused by the rise in
the stream, swept away the temporary supports
and the whole fabric fell
It has also been stated to us that there aro in
all sixty regular bridgee on this road, between
t .is plane and Jefferson City. Of these fifty are
finished, and no one of theie have yet shown the
slightest inclination to give way. Tho remaining
ton are incomplete. They have merely been
supported temporarily on trestle work, and were
not in a condition to test fairly their strength.
In regard to thin matter, however, as we see from
the proceedings of the Board of Directors of the
Paola° Railroad, that they have appointed emi
nently competent gentlemen, to make a thorough
examination of tho facts, we shall abide their
report bet - At indulging in premature:oonjacture.
Another Letter from Henry A. Wise.
The following extraot we select from a long
letter of Henry Wien, to George Book&r,
EMI., of Hampton, Va. It le full of fire and
retreat from the Presidency :
Lastly, I regret to be compelled to notice
what soma to be an insidious attempt to im
pair my usefulness, just at this time of difticni
ty and danger. The Sentinel speaks of " the in
dication In variona emotions of a de,ire to nom
inate him (me) for the Presidency," and says
" Mr. Wiee's last lettere have been written with
a knowledge of that foot." It this is meant to
say that I wrote warmly for the liolon, in order
to make a National claim to a nomination, is an
errontoui Imputation, to say the least of it. The
idea of the Presidency has not been allowed to
enter my head. That iron has not pierced my
heart. I know how it impairs a public man's
usefulness to make such an impatation upon hie
aspirations Da (4e Sentinel so intend .° It
looks very much like as if its fears were father
to its thoughts. I can any on that subject that
I mean to keep the even tenor of my way, with
out fear, favor or affection. If the Democracy
would be guided by me, I can find one hundred
men whom I prefer for the Presidency to my
self. I can find two, at least, in Virginia. One
you know of very w 11. But, if the Democracy
can again succeed, and cannot again unite upon
a bejteekman than I am, and they will unite up
on me, I can only say that I will a la mode
Jackson—fervently and effectually rule Black
Republicanism ; /will rule them.' But the idea
of ruling or not ruling them shall not turn me
a hair's breadth from my own convictions as to
what my duty as a patriot requires. I will
write, speak, aBt as I think right, and leave the
consequences to God and 'the country," with
out thinking of the Presidency.
Now, no to a email matter. They say my fine
sentiment ie a pit glariem from Gen. Bayly. I
he aver said that the Union of the States is the
right of the States—that, or any other form of
exproseing that idea, I never knew It 7 When ?
—whore did he say it? I care not when or
where, I never stole anything from Oen. Bayly.
1 am, truly, your friend,

Geo. BOOKER., Eeq , Hampton, Va.
" Tate is a very beautiful sight for a person
with a relined beastly taste," said Mrs. Parting
ton at the agricultural show, looking at the big
sheep, and addressing a tall young man by her
side. Be responded " pieta." "Is that a hy
draulic ram r she asked, with great simplicity,
provoking a smile on the young man's face, and
a loud laugh from outsiders, who were attracted
by the black bonnet. The young man informed
her that this was a long-wooled sheep, from
which long yarn was spun. "Ah !" said she,
" you are very kind ; but can you tell me if the
Pope has sent any of his bulls over here to this
chow ?" " No," said he, smiling tremendously,
" but among the swine is a descendant of the
great Boanergee." Neither Mrs. Partington nor
any one near knew what he meant, buthe laugh
ed loudly, and those outside laughed louder than
he, much to hie satisfaction. They laughed even
louder when ho found swinging from his button
behind, a tag bearing the inscription, " Vermont
Boy," with age and weight given, but he didn't.
And Ike was looking so innocently all the while
trying to make the ram sneeze by tickling hie.

Rog and Cattle !Market
No essential change hoe taken place in the

of Hogs we heard of was 800 head, at $8.50

this figure buyers are not anxious to operate,
and the market must be quite dull at $8,26@6,.

Holders, however, ask $8,6008,75, and in some
eases $7.
The market for Beef Cattle is rather easier,
