ALLscanENlr 'VALLEY RAILROAD
AND rkuir. COUNCILS.
An ordinance Is now pending before our city
councils which proilosestd allow-the Allegheny
Valley railroad company to run their road down
Duquesne way to the Point, where their depot
is sittiated. Shell it bo allowed? We say,
yea. It will occasion some inoonvisnienees, no
doubt ; but the railroads, to be profitable and
do our city any good, must be acpommodated
with right of way and room. To rim a train of
cars from Lawrenceville to Freeport cannot
be' profitable. The expense of ; (baying in
freights from Lawrenceville to the icily will be
isti , great as to discourage travel jail trade by
thitrbute. The road must be ell ded to the
city, and must pass down some street. Which
.atreet shall it be
bibert, street is already occupied by the Oen
tral road ; and that road Tall need two tracks
to do all its vast and inereatilag business.
More than two tracks cannot be laid down on
that street. Peon street is too narrow for rail
road use, and is needed for an omnibus and car
riage outlet from the city. Duquesne way is
wide enough for a railroad track, and for all
other purposes. We see no objections to that
route that should not give way to the obvious
necessity of extending the railway into the city.
The Allegheny Valley railroad will yet do a
large business, and be of vast benefit to the pity.
It should be allowed all necossel7 ancomm oda
tions at all events.
There was miao`r objection at first to allowing
the Central road to lay down their track along
Liberty street. People supposed it would ruin
their property, and destroy all business on the
street, But a fair trial has note proved tho
groundlessness of those appreheosions It is
etill one of.t.tto busiest streets in the City, and
the railroad etoasions no serious inconvenience
fair trial will prove a similar Noun on Du -
qlO3llO way. There is plenty of room there for
It railway track, and for all ottif i ir business.
The road must be brought into thh eity some
where, and a better route than that cannot be
found.
Wo go for all measures that will' nable no to
complete all 'our railroads speedily, an I got all
the benefits they are sure to produce.
kr Dies AWAY. —The Billy and frantic agitation
that was got up about the Nebraeks bill is fast
dying away. Ii don't work. Thai elections of
this year show that the humbug WAEI I. BB complete
stellate as Barnum's Baby Show. It is now
perfectly apparent that Kansas will be a trap
State, as all sensible-men at &it prOdioted ; and
therefore there is no further occasion to bellow
about that " Nebraska outrage "
Those words have been uttered, and re-itera
ted until they have lost all force and meaning.
Words gantlet break down a greet notional party

- it Is even proposed by some papers of the Re

that if they expect to make a respectable failure

ital out of the question of the admission of
Reader or Whitfield to a seat in Congress. But
that will not pay. It makes not one particle of
difference which is admitted so far as slavery in
Kansas is concerned. It will be a free State,
whichever gets the seat as a dole.; ate ;, and we
care eery little which iit sneoessful. Let the
Missouri farce go a little further ; its failure will

lATEUBENVILLII AND INDIANA RAILUOAD —The
Philadelphia papers are urging upon their citi
zens a subscription to the stook of the above
named railroad. It lane doubt a road in which
Philadelphia as well as Pittsburgh is di
rectly interested. It is, infant, an extension of
the Pennsylvania line of railroads westward into
the heart of the west. But to make It availa
ble there is another road to be finished. The
Pittsburgh and Steubenville road is still unfin
ished, and every day of delay in its completion
is a loss to Philadelphia, to Pittsburgh, to the
Central road, and to all Pennsylvania intoregta.
- Viesitnow. of nothing more desirable in our rail
road system than the early co m pletion of the
Pittsburg and Steubenville road. It is only forty
ono tulles in length ; yet it is an indispensi
ble link In a line of roads 600 miles in
length. That such a work should suffer delay
for want of funds is matter of surprise. No one
doubts its importance, or that it will pay ample
dividends when in operation. We believe its
stock will bo as good as that of the Central road
within six mouths of Its completion. Our Phil
adelphia neighbors would do well to take hold of
this road and push it forward attest as possible,
and then, and not till thou, will the Steubenville :
and Indiana read be of some value to them.
THE NEAT SPEAECII. OF THE HOOSB.—The
Philadelphia Argus, a goon.' Democratic paper,
proposes the Hon. Thos. B. Florence, from the
Firet Congressional Dustriot in Pennsylvania, as
the next Speaker of the House. Mr. F. has
been elected three times successively to Con
gress from what had been before be ran a Na
tive American stronghold. To a thorough
knowledge of parliamentary tactics he adds
talent of a superior order and a commanding
presence. Hod the Democratic party a major
ity in the next House, wo would have topes that
this high honor would be oonferred upon so
worthy a son of Pennsylvania ; but, the oppo
sition being largely in the ascendant, we can
hardly indulge in so fond an anticipation. On
the other band, Law. D. Campbell, of the Day
ton, Ohio, District, is urged by the Cincinnati
auntie. This Campbell is one of the smallest
of the small fry of Abolition-Know .Nothings.
His chola would be a disgrace to the body that
cleats him. If we must have an opponent to
fill that exalted 'oat, give us a man worthy to
sit in the chair once occupied by a Clay, a Polr,
a Winthrop and a Lynn Boyd.
Tue BARAD QUSSTION.—The Gazette of }es
terday explains its meaning in regard to the
crops of this year. It says it had reference
only to the wheat crop. It admit& that all oth
er orops were abundant . ; and that theta is pleh
ty of food in the country, and a surplus to spare,
but it thinks flour will be very dear. Well, we
take the explanation for what it is worth, nod It
simply amounts to what we charged, vii, that It
is desirable to " write up " tip price of flour
and wheat. A good speculation will be made
out of it If It succeeds ; but it is not true tbat
the wheat crop Is short. Advioes fi r om all parts
of the country disprove the assertion. Wo do
not oharge the Gazette with any improper de
sign in this matter; but that the Tribune has we
wont doubt.

The increase of the free States of the ►Vest eon

them which does not bid fair to CoooWe °Faced'

over a million of inhabitants, while Michigan,
Wisconsin and lowa have each over half a mil
lion. The soil in all those States is excellent,
and the influx of settlers rapid. IQ the last five
years Wisooneitt has added 270,000 to her pop-
Wagon, and now has 575,000 ; lowa has in
creased pail more largely. Judging from pre
sent appearances, each of the States we have
named seams likely to possess, not long hence,
a population equal to that of Ohio.
AN Asset/wax Innian.—The last European
mails announce to as publicly, that Mr. George
Summer, brother of the distinguished Senator
of Massachusepts, had declined a high position
under the Russian Government, from an Email
licitness to serve under any but a Republican
form of government. The office which he de

that of Aid de-Camp to the Emperor, an office
which we need hardly int= our readers, is
usually esteemed in Russia as leadlog to the
very highest positions of the State.
" OW) IRONOPEB "—The Naval Board, in their

" the retired list," but gave the President power
to keep him iu the earvice if he thought proper.
Acting on this authority Gen. Piero° has contin

of three females took place at the Timber Pond
near Prince's Hack, while numbers of persons
of both sexes were promenading. The preacher
who performed the ceremony was entirely naked
during a part of it. The ladies, a little more
modest, wore bathing dresses."
The indignation of the people, which was
great, was somewhat paralyzed by the astonish—
ment consequent upon viewing snob a religious'
purifloation as the newly initiated Mot men sul
tanas were undergoing. The authorities, as we
learn from ono who was in Belfast at the time,
Were considerably puzzled what to do on the mo
ment, fearful on the one hand, to invade the
right of, worship guaranteed to all formal)! so-,
liglon; and anxious on the other to put a stop` .
to such indecent display. The papers_ which'
chronicle the facts do not tell us of ihe =NW
of the aforesaid preacher; the Whig oil the
contrary, stating that " it appears they (the•
Mormons) are to remain here for acme tiMe. '
Of course, there is groat excitemetiO'SgartF
tag the affair, and some of the paperidsie
judicious state of high and indignant feeling
The ablest Catholic organ, the Tablet, edited by
the notorious Lucas, Member of Parliament, and
an Englishman, pours a strong phial of wrath
against Protestantism, labial it avers is the ori
gin of Mormonism, and sareastloally holds up,.
the Protestant town of Belfast for quarreling
with what was but a natural consequence. Ia
Mormonism tho Tablet beholds the resurrection
of Protestant em, and illustrates lie position by
saying that the Mormons, like the founder of
Protestantism in England, are all polygamists.
In its own words, "every Mormonite is the Hen
ry the Eighth of private life. The Mormonitos,
besides, aro Antennas, who do not recognise
the right of a King to make a monopoly of wicked
men."
The Mennonites make their appearanoes in
Ireland at every opportune moment for the poll•
tiolans of the Catholic Church. While the inner,
may fear very little, indeed, from preaching of
the former, they will amass considerable amount
of indignation and morality, which will be dung
into the 6onlo for the newly initialed designs of
Primate Cullen and the Roman Propaganda.
The Tablet, in its mild and quiet manner, says:
We beg leave to remind our friends inlielfast,
that the Mormouitos in their city are far less
disgusting than the wretches who founded the
beim in England."
The National Inlelligeneer, which opposed the
repeal of the Missouri compromise, takes de
cided ground against Its reetoration. The s Imo
is true of many other papers and men. There
is now but little probability that a vote to re-
Store the Missouri compromise can be obtained,
oven in the Douse. Of the New York delegation,
only two members have been usually classed
among the friends of the Nebraska law. But
we understand that about 11 of the delegation
will oppose the disturbance of it, sow that it
hoe been adopted as the policy of the country.
The South will sustain it en Mai e. The fey
southern members who voted against it, and
have been re-elected, will vote against repeal.
Tho conflict in Congress will not turn upon
the question of repealing the N ebraska law, or
any part of it, bet of enforein'g it according to
its true intent and meaning. And it will be
brought on by the presence of General Whitfield
and ex-Governor Reeder, each Maiming to be
the Delegate oleot from Kansas. The House of
Representatives will be compelled to decide
which of the two Is entitled to the seat ; and, In
go doing, will decide whether the body, lately
claiming to bo the Legislature of ;sops, were
such in fact. If they were, then their appoint
ment of a day for the election of a Delegate to
Congress was tie day, and Whitfield ie elected ;
go other ctindidato having received fifty votes
for 'Delegate, in the cebolp Territory. If, OD the
other hind, they were a spurious 104 y, having
no legal existence, then ail their man are a oul,
itiy, and a pew Legislature will have to he con
vened. The elcotion on the 14th icOC., at the bid
ding of i volunteer oonvention, and tibia' re
sulted in the choler, of Governor Reeder, is only
valid on the euppoait'on that the Legislature
bad no legal existence. The contested Seat,
therefore, will bring in a discussion of Kansas
affairs ingeneral, Including Emigrant Aid So
cieties, Missouri invaders, &o. The result is
doubtful. But; in dither ease, Kansas will be a
free State. Why Because a large majority of
her citixens are in favor of it. And, although
hitherto, for ,rapt of a dpe execution of the
Kansas-Nebraska law, the pill of that majority
has beep thwarted, it will soon gain a true ex
presaion ; and that expression will be in favor
freedom. There Is no doubt of I' Jour.

Royal Swindling; or how to obtain a
It has recently boon stated that the King of
tiepin was tthply to etpbroil himself in a war
with England, The King had committed one of
those petty acts of mean swindling that a despot
can lawfully practice. The whole plot is thus
clearly developed :
King Ferdinand, of Naples, it appears, ordered
a splendid sot of carpets from an English manu
facturer, which wore made to sire and, ornamon•
ted with the royal arms. The manufacturer no
oompanied hie go de to Naples, which were re
fused, on the impudent ground that they were
never ordered, although he produced the order in
writing. He was told to eel! them, but that was
impossible, as they bad the royal arms en them.
Ho was commanded to put them on board ship
and export them. Be did ship them, and had to
pay export duty. The vessel was then refused a
clearance, and the carpets were landed. He was
then told to sell them by auction. A very low
bidding was made and no advance followed; and
he was not allowed to buy them In. He got for
them much lees than the export duty he had paid
But what became of the carpets r They were so
tually bought at auction hy one of the ring's
agents, against whom no one dared to compete,
and now oover the floors of the palace for which
they had been fabricated. The manufacturer
complained to the British consul, who demanded
redress, but it was refined. But since the fall of
Sebastopol the King became frightened, andlas-.
offered pecuniary reparation f,..r this attempted
royal swindling. His coin will probably be ac
cepted, as Great Britain can claim nothing be
yond ample reparation for this individual In
justice.
An article is going the rounds of the press
stating that the whole concern of the Rothe

besides $300,000,000 more in real estate, mines,

ptand that the general estimate in Europe as to
the aggregate wealth of the whole concern is
200,000,000 francs, or about $40,000,000. The
idea is purely absurd that their wealth should
amount to such an enormous Bum as $1,000,000,-
000, equal at six per omit. to an annual Income
of sixty millions of dollars—a sum which, in
comparatively a few years, accumulating In a
compound ratio, and doubling it every twelve
years, would ooncentrate in their hands a large
portion of the wealth and property of all Eu
