A =MELANCHOLY BTOILY.—Last spring, I
the western emigration fever was at its height
in this city, we met on board a steamboat st
the wharf, a farmer from one of the Eastern
States, on his way to the State of lowa. He ,
was a stout, healthy looking man—a fair speci
men of a well-to do farmer—and was secotepa- I
• filed by his wife, a very handsome woman, and
three interesting children—the oldest a daughter
.past budding into womanhood. He was full of ;
sanguine expect/alone of the happiness in store
for himself and family, in his new home in the
West, and left bore buoyed up with high hopes
and expectations. Yesterday morning, while
standing at the depot of the Pennsylvania Rail
road, we were accosted by a poor, emaciated
looking creature, apparently just on the verge;
of the grave, in whom, after some difficulty, we
recognized the hearty, robust man, who had de
parted in the spring so full of hope. Ho was
but the wreck of hie former self, and hie story,
as related , to. us, was truly melancholy and
heart-rending: Arrived in lowa, ho settled eel
a claim previously selected, but bad not been
more than three or four weeks located, when
hie whole family were attacked with the agar.
After suffering several months, his wife at, I I
daughter apparently recovered, hut only to it
seized with a still more terrible disease---the
typhoid fever.
Fire, the loving partner of hie bosom wee
:carried 'off; next followed his youngest child,
,and in three months hie whole family were laid
%rider the ground. The father, almost broken

to leave -the -country, but was himself taken
—down with the same malady '• and after several

The hull of this steamer was built by J. B. Pringle, of
West Brownsville, and measures 156 feet in length ; 36 feet
beam ; ISA feet hold. Engines, built by Robt. Lee, with two
cylinders 17 inches In diameter, with a 6 foot stroke. Throe
boilers 33 feet long by 21 inches in diameter. She also has
a doctor and negro engine for discharging freight. Cabin
built by aullett & Applegate, from an entire now and oil:
gloat design by Capt. Came. Batchelor. The painting was
executed by those exqulalt artists, lie rata. Rhodes & Nelson.
The upholstery work was furnished by the well known firm
of Rdniundeon & Co. Carpeting by McCallum & Co., of
Yourth street, which le elegant In the extreme. In the for.
want part of the cabin is a splendid landscape from the
pencil of our talented townsman W.O. Wall, representing
the residence of Col. Collier, with a view of the Female
Seminary at Steubenville.

York, were found to contain buck-shot of the size of 140 to
the pound. and pressed balls of the site of 100 to the pound,
to the amount of 174 pounds in weight, and VI pounds of
sheet lei d, No. 4. The boxes were made of white pins, one
inch thick, ovetalled at the corners, about 10% Inched
long, 8% Inches wide, and 434 Inches deep, inside measure.
