LoWry, of this city, was publioly tried on fietnr dq, at the Corner of liiPdyne and Liberty streets, lathe presence Of Arlarge number of citizens. The machine heart utilesemblance at all to the engine of Mr. Latta, of 11incinnati, exhibited bare last epringi AM is, We understand, entirely different In itssonernetion. It was brought to the ground by two mules, who seemed to draw It along very easily. In ten or twelve minutes from the time fire was placed under the boiler steam was raised. Water was first thrown from two one-inch nozzles, but as a sufficient supply of the liquid element could not bo obtained, the operations of the machine did not come up to; the expeotation of the inventor. A single threerineh pipe was then substituted, and the engine worke t admi rably, but while throwing an immense body of water, with a pressure or steam of 135 pounds, a large oast iron pipe suddenly burst, end a stop was instantly put to any further proceed ings. The inventor is very sanguine that his engine witt.yet prove itself superior to any in use, and Will give another public exhibition of its powers as soon as the damages are repaired. The engine was built by Messrs. Robinson & Minis, of South Pittsburgh, at a cost of about $5,000. The FLOBEITe ES Rs-Exa AO Et D.—Manager Fos ter has found Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Florence such a great card that ho has re engaged them for One week more, and accordingly on Monday night they appear in Tyrone Power's famous piece entitled O'Flannogan and the Fairies. We have before remarked upon the improvement in Mrs. Florence's aoting since her last engagement here. As a dancer she is one of the most grace ful women we have ever seen on the stage and deservedly ranks with such oelebr ties as Seno rita Soto, and Mdlle. 'Free Mathews. In dialect parts she is unapproachable. Her versatility is also truly astonishing. To conceive her sudden transitions—from the gay and lively young lass to the Dutch organ girl, from the deorepid old woman with cracked voice to the beautiful dan sense, or from the true nasal twang of Oar Gal to the rich Irish brogue of klistbress Biddy Ma gnire—sho must be seen to be appreciated. Mr. Florence always brings down the house—whe ther with his "hog trot," the irresistibly comi• oal expression of bis face, or some witticism of his own ooining. We have copied from th,, St. Louis Morning Herald a brief biographical sketch of him, as only justice to an actor who is at pre sent tilling so large a portion of the eye of the theatrical public. AN HONEAT Boy.—A lady named Mrs. Mcln tyre, while at market, on Saturday morning, dropped her pocket book, containing about it O. A little fellow named Charley Metthews picked it up a short time after, and observing from a card inside the lady's address, promptly return ed it to her, after she had given up clt hopes of its recovery. As is reward for the lad's honesty, Mrs. M'lntyre made him a pre, , eut of half the contents. WE are happy to learn that Mr. F. L Grieso• mor, an old citizen of Pittsburgh, has recently returned from Missouri and taken up his resi dence in our midst. Ile was, a few years since, manager of the Wayne Iron Works, and was ad milted by all to excel in his occupation, and to turn out the beet article manufactured in his line. Ile is energetic, prompt and skillful, and we cordially recommend him to those who re qnire the services of an able superintendent. NEW COUNTERFEIT. —Twenty dollar Dotes, al tered from three dollar notes, on the Cumber land county Bank, at Bridgeton, N. J., are in circulation. The Dille are skilfully executed, and well calculated to deceive. THE PITTSBURGH MORNING HERALD made itB first appearann, on Saturday morning. We wish the proprietors suocess in their undertaking, but believe they will find starting a new daily paper hare rather an uphill business. BURGLARY.—The house of Mr. John Williams, on Penn street, in the Fifth Ward, was entered by burglars, on Friday night, and clothing and various articles to the amount of $7O or 4 , 60 stolen. DIBTRIOT COURT.—Hon. M. Hampton on the Bench. The jury in thocaeo of James et al. ye. Magill, on Baturlay, returned a 'verdict for defendant. FLOUR AND Wur.er.—There were five hundred and fifteen barrels of flour, and thirteen hundred bushels of wheat brought into the city by river and railroad, on Saturday. THE Court of Common Pleas was in session on Saturday, but no business of importance to the public was transacted. DIVORCE RANTEI..—On Saturday, tho matri monial bonds connecting John and Maria Har ris were severed by the Court or Common Pleas.
