The Hercrulee of the Journal of this city
comes valiantly to the rescue of the Tribune slid
Greeley; and kindly and promptly takeirnp their
defenoe. Bat the defence is 'Tame fOr *int of
faote, and untrue for want of a fair and imparl'
tial judgment.
We spoke upon the testimony of several pa
pers when we referred to . Greeley, of the Tri
bune, as one of the real authors of the "free
love" societies of lie* Terit, tend eleetrhore in
this country. These infamous associations are
the direst fruits of tbosil socialist dootrias that
have for years ferttid eager' advocates in the

The Tribune was not the first to 0405 n theta
societies. Although aware of their existence
for months, it ;aid not one mord-about them un
alkother papers oommeneed the exposure, and
then it published a long account in which. the
worst features of those societies are not ex

Wit.riettle. We suspect the " philosophers "
are attempting to escape by "pfectiMg." Bat
the testimony egainid them is very strong.
Ae to our other charge against the Tribune,
that some months ego it, published several Arti
cles to show that the traion , lbso.of little or no
value to the people of the north,.the' t iourna/
affects to deny it. It is generally knowh. We
have now before us a pamphlet in which those
artioles are reprinted front the Tribtme in
pamphlet form, for general circulatiorr. i The
pamphlet wacgot up at the Tribtint ofdeet; and
sent broadcast over the land.' 'They were do

little value of the Union to the north, the wri•
ter says, on page 14 :
"So far as regards navigationiand tdo profits
" of the export trade, then, there would seem
" to be nothing whatever to be lost by the sop
. '"tiration."
On page 15 the writer speaks at. trades that
might be gained by a. diesolution of the Union,
and says: •
"Thee() would, to a groat extent., make
" amends for diminution at the south, and would
"lessen the loss to one half, or abotot seven

Anion was dissolved ; oar tonslitution diatroyed ;
our republic overthrown ; the, notde Work of our
fathers ruined; the hope of. aufferiog hizmanity
blighted ; and this country expoeed to , all the
horrors of a civil and a servile war. . God will
confound the compile of such cold4blooded
traitors. Shame on their apologists.

A Touching So.Dc.
At the celebration at Ring's Mountain, the
following sentiment was *Offered :
Hon. William Campbell Preston: Rekindled
in the grandson, has been transmitted to us the
spirit which gleamed in the grandairo. While
we have assembled to honor the patriotic deeds
of the one upon the battle-Seld, let us not forget
the statesmanship and eloquence which has
thrown a halo of imperishable glory around the
other. In the fulness of age as in the pride and
strength of manhood, South Carolina delights to
do him reverence.
What follows we give In the graphio language
of the reporter for the Charleston Standird :
When the reading of this sentiment and the
oheere which it occasioned were ended, an aged
and feeble gentleman was Seen making hie way
to the stand. He had once possessed a massive
frame, but it was much wasted ; his hair was
white, and even with the assistance of hie crutch

He said: "If anything could now relume the
embers of a life which, at times in my youth
and manhood, has perhaps burned brightly, it
would be the sentiment which has just been ut

Two Law■ for Ladles
1. Before you bow to a lady In the etroet per
mit her to decide whether you may do as or not,
by at least a look of recognition.
2. When your companion bows to a lady, you
should do the same. When a gentlemen bows to
a lady In-your company, alwaye bow to him in
return.
Nothing is so ill understood in Amerlea as those
conventional laws of society. so well understood
and praotisedfin Europe. Ladles complain that
gentlemen pass them by in the street unnoti
ced, when In fact, the fault lies with their own
broach of politeness. lt is their duty to do the
amiable first, for it lea priVilege which ladies en
joy of choosing their own associates or !acquain
tances. No gentleman likes to risk being out in
the streets by a lady through a premature salute.
Too many ladies, it would seem, "don't know
their trade" of politeness. Meeting ladies In
the streets, whom one has' casually met in com
pany, they seldom bow unless he bows first, and
when a gentleman never departs from the rule of
good breeding, except occasionally by way of ex
periment, his acquaintances do multiply, but he
etude probably charged with rudeness. The
rule IS plain. A lady must be civil to a gentle
man In whose company she is casually brought;
but a-gentleman la not upon this to presume upon
acquaintanceship the first time he afterwards
meets her the Meet.
If it be her will, sho gives, some token of re
oognitioo, *beadle getleman may bow; otherwise
he must pass on and consider himself a stranger.
No lady need hesitate to bow to a gentleman,
for he will promptly and politely answer even if
he has forgotten his fair saluter. None but a
brute eau de otherwise ;,—ebould he pass on rude
ly, his character is declared, and there is a cheap
riddance. Politeness, or breeding, is like law

"My dear husband, I have one request to

" Well, Mary, anything consistent,"
" Yon do not imagine that I would make an

" No, not a request t hat you would consider

" Why, my dear," and her voice trembled a
little, " we have been to several parties among
the neighboring gentry this Winter, and now I
think, that to maintain oar position in society,
we eboald• give a party also.'
The tninfoter looked blank.
" What sort of a party, Mary ?" ho at length

" Why," she-replied, it such a party as those

" Dancing in a minister's house !" exclaimed
Mr. W., In surprise.
" Why, yes, certainly," replied his wife, coax
ingly. You will not dance, the party will. be
mine; and then we have been to similar parties
all Winter,"
" True, true," he teuttereJ, with a perplexed
air, and eat silent for some time. At length he
said, " Yes, Mary, you may make a party, give
a dinner, and, if the guests desire it, you may
dance."
" Thank you, love, thank yon," cried hie de

and imprinting a kiss upon hie oheek.
" But I have some stipulation, to make about

" Bat our furniture and window draperies are

" Well, I would not care," she persisted,

And so the 001100- ended. The minister re

how ler husband would expend the thousand

and her curiosity grew so great, that she hardly
slept during the interval.
At length the !momentous' day arrived. The
arrangements were all complete, and Mrs.

lingered long at the toilet, relying on the fashion
able unpunetnality of fashionable people ; and
at length, when everything was complete, she
left the room, arrayed, like Judith of old. glo

in the hall.
"Well, my dear, our guests have all arrived,"
he said, and opened the door of the receiving
room. Wonderful! wonderful! what an assem

maimed, and the blind, the palsied, and the ex

alms-house were also there, who regarded the
lady, some with mouths wide open, others with
both hpnds thrust into their hair, while others
peered out from behind the furniture, to the co
vert of which they had retreated from her (is:

astonishment, then a displeasure aroesed her
face, till, having run her eyes over the grotesque
assembly, she met the oomically grave expres•

burst into a violent fit of laughter, during the
paroxysms of which the bursting of her corset

"Mary!" said her husband sternly. She sup
pressed her mirth, stammered an excuse, and
added,
"Yen wW forgive mo, and believe yourselves

"That id well done," whispered Mr. W----;
then, turning to the oompany, he said :
