The police last evening made a descent upon
7 the premises occupied by the Club, at No. 666
.21 Broadway, over Taylor's saloon, and arrested
iBl ' Albert Brisbane, the well known Boobshet, and
.... three others, who wore confined in prison during
~.. the - night. The event created the most intense
iquiitetuatit in'the vicinity.
The particulars arc are as folllows :

.;.. leas 'over. It had boon antielpated that the
10 ;MeMberstin attendanoe on this - particular even
ing would be something extraordinary,, in eon.
'9l -sequence of the newspaper publicity which has
1' been given to the doings of the Club within the
... 'pent fortnight. There were probably upward of
three htmcfred peranns present, first .and last,
doting-the entertainment; Many of those were
11 very-young men. Many were old men, gray
... haired and venerable, who, embraced Free Love
doetrinee f rvently. All went on- quietly until
about 8 o'clock, when speaking was oom•
• meneed.- Mr. Henry Clapp, who is a prominent
... spokesman - for the Societies, led off. lie made
186 a.violent'epeeeli in denunciation of the Press of
this oily. Mr. Albert Brisbane followed him in
... a harangue, in which ho declared that New
York's Chief institution is Merrier street, and
36 that witiumttliatiocratity New York would not be
what it is; it tronid be simply a dull city of
meNdanitg•
... Mr. Brisbane's remarks were received with
... decided disfavor, and it was feared that he would
~. be assaulted before he could leave the room.
53 The pollee captains, Captain Turnbull of the
~. Eighth, and Captain Kisener of the Fourteenth
... Wards, happened to be among the audience du
4 ring the delivery of Brisbane's speech; having
~. dropped in to take an observation, in cones
,.. quence of complaints which had beer. entered
~. against the establishment of Mr. Taylor, and
. others doing business in that vicinity The
20 gatherings had been complained of as disorderly
~. la their character, and there were rumors afloat
... that the house had been brought to the notice of
... the Grand Jury.
.. These biota induced the captains of the Eighth
.. and Fourteenth Wards to concert measures for
suppressing the concern. Early in the evening
a crowd began to collect about the doors of the
saloon, and the business of the adjoining houses
was seriously interfered with. Capt. Turnbull
observed among this crowd a number of sue
-12 &dons characters, known to the police, and
'3 considered that the proper Hmehad arrived for
interfering with the performances up stairs. He
45 accordingly conferred with Capt. Kissnor, and
toe two captains, accompanied by officers Cun
ningham and Roach of the Eighth District, pro
ceeded to the place, demanded entrance, and
were refused, on the plea that the gothering was
a private one. Capt. Turnbull and Capt. Kiss
nor were both in plain clothes, wearing only
their stare. The officers finally paid the en
trance fee of 25 cents, and walked. la.
After Brisbane had concluded his speech,
Cape:Turnbull heard a souffle in the hall, went
out to sea what was the matter, and found the
doarkespee, Mr. Thomas Harland, elitehed with
• Mr. Cetkefair. Capt. Turnbull aseed liar•
lead if his name was Wheeler; be replied "No;
that be was noting for Mr. Wheeler." Cookefair
made a charge of assault and battery against
Harland, And upon this charge It became Capt .
Turnbull's duty to take flarland into custody.
Harland 'masted ; Capt. Tornbull called for as
elstsnoe; several citizens stepped forward, and
Harland was taken down stairs and put in
charge, to bo conveyed to the Eighth Ward sta
tion hour. Two brothers, John Henderson and
Benjamin Ileptierson, whp came to the rescue of
Flatitind, - Were likewise arrested for Interference
with the oflloerrs in the discharge of their duties.
Mr. Briabano himself came out to see what the
trouble was, and was arrested by Capt. Turn
bull on a charge of disorderly condaot, and was
also conducted to the station house

IThe scene that followed these arrests batiks
any description. There was no longer any
" passional attraotion." It was all passionate
repulsion. Several highly respectable gentle.
1 mon, well known in the literary world and In
politics, sought to make a speedy exit The Po
lice Captains Stood by the door, warning the
company to disperse quietly, and the ladles hur
ried to their dressing room to recover hats and
shawls, and then rushed out to find their escorts.
Servants young gentlemen, destitute of bats and
bemoaning rent gloves' and departed overcoats, I
dashed about to add to the confusion. Mr.
Stephen Pearl Andrews, the financial and refor
matory mover In this enterprise, was absent, for
the first time Since the organization of the Club,
suffering uuder severe illness. A large number
of ladies were present,—strong minded women,
who came to reason philosophically, and found
to their 'tansy that philosophy did not work.
At 9# o'clock precisely, the gas was turned
off In the larger room; fifteen minutes later the
entire premises were in darkness, and our re
porter, with precisely five other men, descended
the staircases In profound silence and darkness.
(Our reporter is generally on hand where there
is anything brewing ; he was morally certain
there was to be a row, and so dropped in—ho
ping, like Paul Pry, "that he did not intrude.")
la Broadway, around the doors of Taylor's

sidewalks for nearly the distance of a trio*
stoJd an expectant crowd, who had got wind of
the fun that was to be beard of above, and who
watched with Intense eagerness the egress of one
victim after another in the relentless grasp of
the Police. Our reporter made unto himself
" friends of the mammon of nnrightrcusuess,"
and went to the Station House to hold converse
with the unhappy persons who had already been
convoyed to that secure retreat.
As the female members of the Club emerged
from the doors, like a flook of frightened sheep
chased by wolves, the Pollee following closely in
their track, the crowd raised loud shouts—

Instructions to its agents so to proceed as not to
infringe our municipal laws ; and it quotes the
remarks of Judge Kane in support of the idea
that it has succeeded is this purpose. It may
be so. Judge liana is an upright and Intelli
gent judge, and will pronounee the law as it le,
without fear or favor. But if the British gov
ernment has, by Ingenious contaivancea sum:teed
ed in sheltering its agents from conviction as
mhlefactors, it has, in so doing, doubled the
magnitude of the national wrong Inflicted on the
United States. This government has done its
duty of internal administration in prosecuting
the individuals engaged in these note. If they
taking
ofuitted,
the by reason of a deliberate under-
British government, not only as a
nation, to violate our sovereign rights as a na
tion, but also to evade our municipal laws, and
that undertaking shall bo consummated by its
agents In the United States—when all this shall
have been judicially ascertained, the President
will then have before him the elements of deoi
sign as to what international action it becomes
the United States to alopt la so important a
matter."
QUEER FREAK OP . A LUNATIO —About seven
o'clock yesterday morning, an individual was
seen walking down Freeman street towards the
Ohio river, dressed in coat, shoes and hat, but
entirely sans culottes. A couple of gentlemen
who happened to observe him in this eccentric
attire, stopped and asked him why be was walk
ing along the street without any pantaloons.
He replied that he was going to the river to take
a bath, and wished to accustom his legs to the
cold in order that the water would not chill him
when he walked in. They soon discovered from
hie conversation that the unfortunate gentlemen
was a lunatic, and ascertaining his place of res
idence, took him home—an. Qom.
A hintnumun TO A PRTETBIL. —A movement
has been made among the printers of Virginia,
having for its object the Graafian of a monument
over the remains of James Finch, late lore
man of the Norfolk Argus, who recently died in
Petersburg of yellow fever, having (manacled
the disease while in the discharge of his duties,
nobly sacrificing himself to the fell destroyer
rather thanidesert his poet in the hour of gloom,
of trial, and of danger.
