Tba Whig State Convention met at Harris
burgh on the 11th inst. There were a good
many delegatee present, enough at any rate to
make out a complete list of officers, and a oom
iniltce on resolutions. The resolutions are op
posed to proscription on acoount of religion or
birth; and they are bound to restore the Mis
nouri Compromise if they can. They resolve to
hare no more slave States, and get essential
m. d.ficftiions ef the Fugitive Slave Law. Of
course tuey a*e gu'.i-g to sell the public works,
whe'ti-r a purchaser can he found or not.
Cut the great event of this convention was the
indignant repudiation of Cussmore Williamson
isci. He was proposed for nomination for Ca
nal Commissioner, and actually got eight vote 3
on the first ballot. That vote and the result
shows the foolish mistake the Republican party
male in putting in nomination a man whose
only recommendation was his imprisonment for
an alleged crime The Republicans must sup
port him alone. No other party will touch him'
or shoulder ary part of the folly. The Whigs
rrjec rim ; the K S's. laugh at the humbug ;
an 1 cvn some of the Abolitionists consider It a
farce. It is a hopeless and impotent attempt to
maie 'j ilict.ry subservient to temporary
itiruto. Cat it d'n’t seem to take.

one hundred thousand dollars ; and the amount
will yet be largely increased. We give below a

amount raised in Pittsburgh included. We are
informed that at least $2,0 00 will be forwarded
from tni6 city. Probably ia several of the cities
named above the amounts will bo increased.
Baltimore baa done nobly in tho case ; having
not only sent the largest sum of money of any
olty, but has alao sent a large number of tents in
which the inhabitants flyiDg from the afflicted
cities can euoamp and find shelter in the open
fields.
New Haven, Connecticut, sent a cargo of 200
tons of pare ioe, which was very acceptable. A
muoh larger amount of money will be needed to
prevent much suffering before health is restored
to those cities, and the people can again veuture
back to their bornt s.

THE QUEEN OF ENGLAND AT TUB TOMB OF NAPOLEON
[Fivin tb« MoQltf*UT.)
The gioen virited, the day befurc yesterday,
the tomb of the Emperor. No one of her visits
pru luce 1 a deeper Impression. As tho review
U,'c 1 till very ta«c, *.cr M\j"G'y was no longer
expected at the Hotel des lcvahdes ; neverthe
less, she determined on going there, noiwith
standing the lateness of the hour. The Queen
arrived, eouac-qaently, at night fall, followed by
a numerous euff, burroun-Je I by tho veterans of
our old wars, who had hastened to meet her,
while she advanced with noble composure tg*
wirla the last looting place ot him who was
Eugland’s most constant adversary. What a
epectaole 1 How nnny remembrances with all
tue coutrarl", they brought up to the mind 1 Bat
when by the light of ?crchi*e, the glitter of uni
forms, amid tbe strains of tbo organ playing
“ Go-i eave the Qieen,” her Majesty was led by
the Emperor to the chapel whero the remains of
Napoleon lie, the effect was overpowering and
immense, the emotion profound, for every one
was rifleeting thiU this was no ordinary homage
offered at the tomb ol a great man, but a solemn
act, attesting that tbe rivalries of tne past were
forgotten, and that now tho union between the
two peoples had received its most signal oonse
oration.
The trial at Buffalo of Alexander Forbes, for
shooting a dry-goods clerk named Shaler, for
se iuoing bis vnf.j while absent in California, has
just resulted in tbe acquittal of the prisoner.
D was a case of peculiar barJahip for Mr. Furbes
Shaler was his friend, in whom he had the ut
most confidence, even remitting moneys to him
with directions to give hie wifo any sum she re
qjired—but tak.Qg advantage of this he entered
his friend’s house only to beoomo the deetroyer
of his peace. When Forbes returned from the
land of gold aod found himself dishonored, it
erased him, and in &Q insane moment he shot
the Beduoer. At least, this was the defence.
When tbe verdict of the jary was given announc
ing an acquittal there was much applause from
spectators. Judge Green had the doors dosed
immediately, the guilty parties arrested aod
fined $lO each.

raising twenty or ihirty acres of wheat oan well
afford to [-orohaso n seed drill, unless he can

| The seed is put into the ground at a uniform

j &ad ripea at the same time,
i A nuob smaller quantity of seed is require 1.
1 beoause no allowanoe need bo made for p u rtions

nor for a Urge number of eeeds falling together,
• as usually happens in broadcast sowing ; nearly
| half a bushel of seed per acre may thus be saved,
[ which with the present high price of wheat,
! would pay the oost of a seed sower the first year,

I Wbcro the plants grow at uniform diftancea,

Inhalation for Diseased Lungs,
The mode of Inhalation, in case of diseased lungß and
throat, recommended by Dr. Curtis in his advertisement,
strikes us as the true one. It la now generally admitted by |
our best phyriciana, that local rffeeoltiJs can only be suc
cessfully treated by local applications. This practice has
been pursued from the flrst*wtth respect to external inflam
mation and corrosions, and we see not why diseases of the
throat and lungs may not be treated in the same manner*
we believe they may. In this variable climate of ours,
where lung and throat complaints have become so preva
lent and rife, we earnestly recommend to the public, and
to the especially, to avail themselves of Dr. Curtis'
remedy.—(One who has tried it ] See advertisement in
thin paper.
