Pittsburgh, on SaTCEnir. Septem ber 6, 1566, at " o'clock A M &AML. W. BLACK. Chairman. PASSMORK WILLIAMSON AND ABOLI tiosism Three months ago the name of Passmore Williamson had not been heard of by ninety nine one hundredths of the people of this State. Now he is the candidate of the Abolition party for Canal Commieeioner. And what hae given this man, eo lately unknown, this Buddcn notoriety, and this claim upon publio confidence ' His frionds will answer, " It Is because he has shown himself a good Abolitionist ” The records o tho Philadelphia Courts will mdicalr that it is because ho hae abetted and encouraged an assault and battery, abducted a uegress and her children, and sworn to an untruth. He is in jail on oharge of having made under oath a false answer to a writ of Habeas Corpus. He was under in dictment for assault and battery. He is charge with having enticed away a slave from her mas ter against her will. It is true that, in regard to this last charge, the woman note swears that it was not against her will; and she seems ready to swear to anything her now found friends may desire. But oertain it is that respectable wit nesses testify directly in oontradiotton to her present story. But the main feature of W iUtam son’s case, and the one that has made a great man of him, is that alleged false answer on oath for which ho is in prison. And this is his re commendation, and the only one we bavo yet beard of, to a high and responsible offioe. A Canal Commissioner takes an oath to do his duty faithfully. Mr. Williamson will swear with alacrity, perhaps, if he gels a chance. But will his oath bind him ' What else has Passmore Williamson done to show his fitness for Canal Commissioner r We know of nothing, unless it he that he has prosed himself a worthy member cf that party that swears eternal hatred and hostility to the people of the South. Large quantities of mer chandise ooming from and goiog to the South hare heretofore passed otter cor F qM !, c works; and it is probably supposed that by piaoicg Williamson in the office of manager if those public works, he will have the power to wreak his unprovoked vengeance on everything South ern. No matter about his fitnesß for the office Character, oapacity, honesty, are old fashioned virtues, and don't suit the distempered times in which we live. No inquiry 1b made for such qualifications now. "Is he honest’ I« ho cs,. pablo? Is he attached to the constitution V Such were the questions in refereDoe to candi dates that used to be asked by our fathers Is Williamson honest: He is in j»H ’or alleged false swearing " Is ho capable He was never heard of beforo as a bnsinesß man, and has had no experience in public affairs. " Is he attaohed to the constitution*" He belongs to that Abolition party that proclaims the constl tntion a lie, and the Union a compact that jhonld be diseolvod. Ho belongs to a party, one of whose champions burned a oopy of the constitution at a pnblio meeting not loDg ago, to show his abhorronoo of it. The old catechism won't do for these modem timee. Our fathers were old fogios, and their old homespun sincerity and patriotism would be laughed at now-a days. Let us reverse the old oateohiem, and apply it to Williamson, who i, now nominated for a high offioe. "Is he dishonest! ” Behold his imprisonment for an alleged crime. "Is he incapable?” He has given no evidenoe of oapaoity. " Is be oppoui to the Constitution 1" Ho belongs to the party that defies, abhors, and publioly burns it. He ll do, shout REPUBLICANS in State Convention assembled, and he is nominated "4) aedamtt But tbero is a deopor motivo in this nomina tion than the mere unfitness of tho thing. The party that publicly burns the Constitution, that preaches disunion, that says that when the Bible oomes between them and slavery they will give it no quarter, has a motive for this nomi nation that is easily seen. It is the same party that has labored for years to degrade the Execu tive and Legislative functions of this govern ment, and they now strike at the Judiciary. All functions and all branches of our noble fabric of government must be assailed, and the confidence of the people in them destroyed. To resist the execution of the laws unto murder is heroism. To be adjudged guilty of a crime is a recommendation to offioe. To be removed from offioe for a cause shown is martyrdom de serving ft orown. We congratulate the oountry upon two evente : one ifl that that pseudo Legislature of Kansas &re enacting laws bo extravagant, absurd and wicked as to render them powerless and void. The absurdity of its acts rendere It an impotent laroe and the rascality of its proceedings Is bo arousing publio indignation as to render the future freedom of Kansas a certainty. The other oauee of congratulation is, that this Abolition party, under tho false name of Republican, is, in its initiatory steps, so passiog the bounds of decorum and propnety a. to open be eyes of all sensible men, and will render th party powerless for mischief, as t«.. tnoapab e Mgood The republican party had one prece dent for H. nomination. Some years ago a mU IBn of Pittsburgh was in prison for an alleged offence against public law. He was norm nated and elected Mayor while there and Governor Johneton pardoned him out of jail that he might be sworn into offioe. The repub lioaus follow that example.
