ANDREW a MURDOCH,
The Agricultural Society a Secret Or
gakization.—The Board of Managers of the
Allegb eny County Agricultural Sooiety met yes
terday morning in the Court -House, but on
the ridiculous pretext that the reporter of the
Post had not made a sufficiently lengthy report
of a previous meeting, refused to admit any of
the reporters of the oity press. We are conse
quently unable to furuisn an account of tbelr
proceedings. We were always under the im
pression that tho Agricultural Society of this
ooanty was & publio body, open to all, until in
formed differently yesterday. It would appear
from the action of the Board that they consider
the people at large have no right to be informed
of their doings, although every publio spirited
man in the county is interested in the suooess of
the oomiog fall exhibition. The right bos never
beeu granted to the to prescribe the par
ticular length we shall make their prooeedi ngs,
and if they ohooso to consume several hours,
gossippiog over their own domestic affairs, it
does not necessarily follow that we are to fur
nish the publio with their crude remarks. We
always gave suoh portions of the proceedings
as were of genorat Interest, without asking ad
vice from tbe Board as to wbat we should in
sert Hereafter we shall not trouble ourselves
reporting their proceedings, and anything rela
tlvo to their meetings will only be published
When paid for our usual advertising rates.
Suit against the City.— Mr. William DUh
ridge yesterday instituted an aotion in the Dls
triot Court, against the oity of Pittsburgh, to
recover tbe som of $5OO, alleged to have been
offered as a standing reward, some years ago,
by Counoils, for tho arrest and oonvictlon of an
incendiary. Dithridge, it appears, was the
person through whom officer Hague received the
intelligence ib&t led to the detection of Edward
Lambert, now in the Penitentiary for firiog Mr.
Phillips Btab’e, in tbe Seoond Ward, last spring.
Mr. Hague, shortly after the arrest, notified the
Councils that he was entitled to the reward, but
we believe has nevtr been paid. As Dithridge
laid the scheme by whioh Lambert was en
trapped into a ooQfesßion, and Hague ooly made
tho arrest afterwards, the former oonsiders'him
eelf entitled to tbe reward, &ad is now accord
ingly bringing suit for the amount.
Fire —Tuesday night, about twelve o’olook,
smoke was discovered issuing from tho front
window of Howe’s restaurant, on St. Clair street
The door was broken open by a oouple of young
men belonging to tbe Red Lion Hotel, and the
froot room discovered to bo ou fire In two places
under the counter. A few baokets of water ex
tinguished it, before the engines o&me on the
ground. It was undoubtedly the work of an in
cendiary, as no person resided in the bouse, and
no fire bad beeu used in the room for several
months. A few minutes before tbe fire was dis
covered, a man was observed to oome out of the
yard Iq tbe rear of the bouse, and run off.
Another.— A fire broke out, yesterday noon,
in the roof of the paint ehop of Mr. James Plyn,
on the oorner of Liberty and Hand street, but
was extinguished before much damage was done.
Disturbance at the Camp Meeting A
couplo of fellows named John Andrews and
David Boss, who attempted to raise a disturb
ance at the Camp Meeting on Monday night,
were brought down yesterday, on commit
meats made out by Alderman Dobbs, who hap
pened to be ou the ground with tbe proper doo
□ mentß, and confined In jail.
Tall and Prolific Oats — Wo were pre
sented, yesterday, a bunch of Oats numbering
seventeen stalks, all the product of 000 grain.
They were five feet ancf upwards in
tho heads were of Brobdigoagian proportions.
They were grown in Ch&rtiere township, upon
the farm of a gentleman whose name has slipped
our memory.
The St. Charles is popular, but not more so
than any hotel deserves with such attaches as
Mullen and Johnson. Tbe dinners there ore
always exoolleot, and always will be under the
present management. If any one is inoreduloua
let him do as we did, go and “ try one on,” and
we venture to say he will oome back a less hun
gry if not a better man.
A Chance for Sport. —A cricket match be
tween *• Old England M and “ Young America ”
trill oome off to-day at Craft's grounds, near
Oakland. A first rate chance for sport is offer
ed, and no doubt many will be on the grounds.
Plenty of provisions, of all kinds, will be pro
vided.
